Synovial osteochondromatosis is a benign disorder in which cartilaginous loose bodies develop about the large joints, usually the knee. It is caused by synovial metaplasia of unknown etiology. Symptoms are due either to mechanical problems caused by the loose bodies or to the degenerative arthritis that usually follows in several years. Surgical or arthroscopic removal of the loose bodies appears to be the only effective treatment. Loose bodies may recur, necessitating synovectomy.

Since 1972, 267 tumors or tumor-like lesions of the hand in 257 patients were examined at the bone tumor registry by the Swiss Society of Pathology in Basel, Switzerland. This is 9% of a total of 2,800 bone tumors submitted. An analysis revealed 254 benign tumors or tumor-like lesions and 13 malignant tumors, among them 2 metastases of tumors of unknown origin. As expected, enchondromas (n=81) and pigmented villo-nodular synovitis of the tendon sheath (n=104) were the most frequent tumors. All other tumors or tumor-like lesions appeared only as solitary cases or in small numbers. The radiologi…

Two dogs, one 4 months old and the other 1 year old, had histories of progressive posterior weakness. In both cases, there was severe asymmetric proprioceptive loss but appreciable preservation of strength. Benign, cystic expansile lesions involving the facets and lamina of the thoracic spine were observed radiographically; a single lesioons was demonstrated in the other. Examination of biopsy speciments taken at the time of laminectomy revealed the lesions to be osteocartilaginous exostoses (osteochondromas, ecchondromas, exostoses). The progress of dogs 1 and 2 has been monitored for 1 1/2 y…

OBJECTIVES: To demonstrate the usefulness of intraoral ultrasonography (IOUS) for tongue mass lesions, we analyzed surgery cases excluding s … cated 11 representative cases (fibrous polyp, haemangioma, pyogenic granuloma, lipoma, liposarcoma, chondroma, lymphangioma, schwannoma, neurofibroma, pleomorphic adenoma and amyloidosis) to show the usefulness of IOUS.

In 3 patients, 1 to 3 loose bodies were removed. In 1 patient with a synovial chondromatosis, 40 chondromas were retrieved. In osteoarthritis, impinging osteophytes were trimmed in 3 cases and partial synovectomy was performed in 10 patients. The following complications were observed: a temporary sensory deficit of the lateral femoral …

BACKGROUND: We undertook this study to describe the clinical characteristics of primary benign chest wall tumors and to evaluate the results of surgical treatment.
METHODS: We included patients with primary benign chest wall tumors who underwent surgical resection at the Instituto Nacional de Cancerología from January 1990 to December 2002. All patients had histological confirmation of benign tumor. Descriptive analysis was carried out.
RESULTS: There were 17 patients, nine women (53%), with an average age of 35.1 years (interval 16-66 years). The most frequent tumor was chondroma in seven c…

From 1975 to 1981, 50 patients with spontaneous hematomas due to intracranial tumours were treated in the Neurochirurgische Universitätsklin … histologically; 2 of these cases were assumed to be malignant gliomas. Two congenital tumours and a chondroma of the cerebellopontine angle were particularly notable. The incidence of tumour hemorrhage reported here was 4.1%. In 40 patients (80%) the hemorrhage was the cause of an acute clinical course, leading to death in 10 cases. 30% of the patients had …

Enchondromas are a common tumor in bone that can occur as multiple lesions in enchondromatosis, which is associated with deformity of the affected bone. These lesions harbor somatic mutations in IDH and driving expression of a mutant Idh1 in Col2 expressing cells in mice causes an enchondromatosis phenotype. Here we compared growth plates from E18.5 mice expressing a mutant Idh1 with control littermates using single cell RNA sequencing. Data from Col2 expressing cells were analysed using UMAP and RNA pseudo-time analyses. A unique cluster of cells was identified in the mutant growth plates tha…

Enchondromas are common in the hand but less frequent in the distal phalanges. Epidermal cysts are rare in the hand but when they occur can be difficult to differentiate from enchondromas both clinically and radiologically. Our review of seven distal phalangeal bone lesions treated over 7 years included four enchondromas and three epidermal cysts. The patients with epidermal cysts all had a history of previous penetrating trauma 5-8 years earlier. One patient with an enchondroma had a history of a penetrating injury. Patients presenting with distal phalangeal lesions and a history of previous …

While squamous cell carcinoma is the most common neoplasm to involve the larynx, several other histologic tumor types can occur. The laryngologist should consider a nonsquamous neoplasm when the tumor is long-standing, pigmented, covered by intact mucosa, or there is a history of neoplasia. Careful endoscopy, often using microlaryngoscopy, and careful handling of the tissue will ensure accurate diagnosis.
