Beta Test of a Christian Faith-Based Facebook Intervention for Smoking Cessation in Rural Communities (FaithCore): Development and Usability Study.

BACKGROUND: Individuals living in rural communities experience substantial geographic and infrastructure barriers to attaining health equity in accessing tobacco use cessation treatment. Social media and other digital platforms offer promising avenues to improve access and overcome engagement challenges in tobacco cessation efforts. Research has also shown a positive correlation between faith-based involvement and a lower likelihood of smoking, which can be used to engage rural communities in these interventions. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop and beta test a social intervention proto

Infection prevention and control: Qualitative study of the preparedness and response of Christian health Association of Ghana to Marburg virus disease in Ghana.

OBJECTIVE: Recent disease outbreaks underscore the importance of robust disease surveillance and infection prevention and control (IPC) programmes to bolster Africa's public health response system. Yet, available evidence shows extensive gaps in the emergency response capacity of faith-based healthcare providers on the continent. Accordingly, this study examines the IPC and surveillance strategies adopted by a faith-based healthcare provider and the challenges encountered during Marburg Virus Disease outbreak (MVD) in Ghana. METHOD: We collected data from 15 clinical and nonclinical health wo

The etiology of sexual pain in American Christian women: associations of sexual debut, maternal teachings on sex, and abuse history with pain severity.

BACKGROUND: Sexual pain (SP) affects a significant proportion of women, with lifetime prevalence ranging from 7% to 46%, but is poorly understood. While conservative religious affiliation has been identified as a potential risk factor since the 1970s, the mechanisms underpinning this association remain insufficiently characterized. AIM: To investigate the etiological factors contributing to SP among Christian women in the United States who attended church frequently in adolescence, with a focus on the roles of sexual debut timing, maternal explanations of sex and abuse history. The study also

Christian Congregations as Sites of Response to Community Substance Use Issues: An Exploratory Needs Assessment Survey of Clergy in North Carolina, USA.

Opioid overdose deaths have devastated communities across the USA for over two decades. This study explores how Christian clergy in North Carolina perceive and respond to substance use issues, including opioid misuse. An anonymous online survey of clergy in 24 North Carolina counties was conducted from December 2020 to February 2021 (n = 105, response rate 7.6%). Nearly all respondents (98%) reported that their congregations offered at least one form of support for those affected by substance use issues. Over half (58%) reported someone seeking help for substance use in the past year, and cler

A Dual Route to Distrust of Atheists: Perceiving Atheists to Lack Individualizing Moral Foundations and an External Moralizing Agent Heightens Christians' Distrust.

In the last decade, the percentage of Americans who identify as atheists has almost doubled from 2% to 4%. Still, prejudice against this ever-growing group persists. Across four studies, we explored two distinct yet related correlates of antiatheist prejudice amongst American Christians: (a) the perception that atheists lack a moral compass and (b) the belief that faith in God is necessary to living a moral life. Grounded in moral foundations theory and big gods theory, we investigated this dual pathway to antiatheist prejudice in four samples. In Studies 1a and 1b, we found that Christians' (

BACKGROUND: Pre-eclampsia (PE) is a pregnancy-related hypertensive disorder and the leading cause of worldwide maternal deaths with the greatest burden in sub-Saharan Africa. Pre-eclampsia is one of the leading causes of maternal mortality in Sierra Leone, where the rate is the highest globally, primarily due to hypertensive disorders. A Christian Faith-Based Facebook Intervention for Smoking Cessation in Rural Communities (FAITH-CORE): Protocol for a Community Participatory Development Study.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco smoking remains the leading cause of preventable morbidity and mortality in the United States, with significant rural-urban disparities. Adults who live in rural areas of the United States have among the highest tobacco smoking rates in the nation and experience a higher prevalence of smoking-related deaths and deaths due to chronic diseases for which smoking is a causal risk factor. Barriers to accessing tobacco use cessation treatments are a major contributing factor to these disparities. Adults living in rural areas experience difficulty accessing tobacco cessation servi

Seroprevalence, risk factors and comorbidities associated with Helicobacter pylori infection amongst children receiving care at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center.

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori frequently causes gastritis and peptic ulcers, and affected children are at risk of developing gastric carcinoma later in adulthood. METHODS: This was a Hospital based cross sectional study. A total of 200 children aged 6 months to 14 years were enrolled. Study subjects were tested for H. pylori using a standard serology rapid test measuring immunoglobulin G for H. pylori. For risk factors, Chi-square tests were used to test for association and then, odds ratios and their corresponding 95% confidence intervals and p-values were computed using logistic regressio

Changing attitudes about spanking among conservative Christians using interventions that focus on empirical research evidence and progressive biblical interpretations.

This study examined how interventions that include either empirical research evidence about spanking, progressive biblical interpretations, or both, affect attitudes and intentions about spanking. Four weeks prior to the intervention sessions, students completed a Demographic Form, the Religious Fundamentalism Scale, and the Attitudes Toward Spanking (ATS) sca
