Seventeen healthy postmenopausal women who had subjectively noted eight or more hot flashes per day and who objectively demonstrated four or more vasomotor flushes of 1.0C or more during eight hours of continuous thermography were studied. Sexual function, including vaginal atrophy, and hormonal status, were studied in 42 naturally postmenopausal women. Vaginal pulse amplitude and subjective sexual responses during self-induced erotic fantasy and during erotic films were compared with responses of a small number of premenopausal women. A randomized double-blind trial with 15 postmenopausal women led to a remarkable result. Local treatment with vaginal tablets just containing 0.03 mg estriol proved to be equivalent to the widely used dosage of 0.5 mg. The test drug Gynoflor E induced significant proliferation of the vaginal epithelium and thus offers the basis for a complete restoration of the vaginal environment. The authors review any possible correlation between prolactin and growth hormone in human breast cancer. They find neither a significant relationship between growth hormone and breast cancer nor between prolactin and growth hormone. In many cases however, prolactin levels may be used as a neoplastic marker. The excess of prolactin could originate either in a tumor factor stimulating its secretion by the hypophysis or in an ectopic production of the hormone by tumor tissue.

AIMS: To compare the effects of 3 months' tibolone treatment with the effects of placebo on sexual function (in particular, vaginal blood flow, and sexual desire and arousability) and climacteric symptoms in postmenopausal women.
