Dust devil migration is a direct expression of the dynamics of the lowermost martian atmosphere. These dynamics are responsible for dust lifting and atmospheric injection, a vital part of the dust cycle that governs modern Mars' weather and climate. Here, we use deep learning and two decades' worth of orbital images to track the global, diurnal, and seasonal migration patterns of dust devils across Mars, providing a distributed characterization of the dynamics of near-surface winds. Across Mars, derived wind stresses systematically exceed those predicted by global circulation models and freque

Extreme atmospheric rivers (EARs) are responsible for most of the severe precipitation and disastrous flooding along the coastal regions in midlatitudes. However, the current non-eddy-resolving climate models severely underestimate (~50%) EARs, casting significant uncertainties on their future projections. Here, using an unprecedented set of eddy-resolving high-resolution simulations from the Community Earth System Model simulations, we show that the models' ability of simulating EARs is significantly improved (despite a slight overestimate of ~10%) and the EARs are projected to increase almos…

This study analyzed how the perceived organizational silence climate held by members of digital platform service organizations is related to turnover intention through learned helplessness, psychological withdrawal, and job burnout. The perceived organizational silence climate is defined here as an individual-level psychological climate perception: the degree to which an individual employee perceives that a belief is prevalent within the organization that raising problems or expressing opinions is of no use or may lead to disadvantages. A cross-sectional online survey was conducted with 346 em

Small-medium-sized water bodies (S&M-WBs) are important ecosystems also linked to global GHG emissions, although their contribution to global warming is often underestimated. Through a meta-analysis, this study integrated data from multiple studies, and comprehensively assessed GHG emissions from S&M-WBs. Results indicated that GHG emissions from S&M-WBs showed an overall increase over the past 20 years. Changes in CO2 emissions were not significant globally. In contrast, CH4 and N2O showed notable differences across various climate zones. These differences were closely related to the distinct

Early life adversity has been studied widely, but still understudied is the impact of positive early life experiences. Emerging evidence suggests that humanity's millions-year-old evolved developmental niche (EDN) supports healthy biopsychosocial development. The EDN includes positive touch, responsive relationships, a welcoming social climate, social embeddedness, and self-directed free play. We examined the relation between EDN components and cardiac vagal regulation, the online biomarker for psychopathology, health, and a correlate of positive parenting behaviors. Insects often exhibit irruptive population dynamics determined by environmental conditions. We examine if populations of the Culex tarsalis mosquito, a West Nile virus (WNV) vector, fluctuate synchronously over broad spatial extents and multiple timescales and whether climate drives synchrony in Cx. tarsalis, especially at annual timescales, due to the synchronous influence of temperature, precipitation, and/or humidity. We leveraged mosquito collections across 9 National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) sites distributed in the interior West and Great Plains region USA over a 45-month pe

The strong relationship between climate and fascioliasis outbreaks enables the development of climate-based models to estimate the potential risk of fascioliasis outbreaks. This work aims to develop a climate-based risk map of fascioliasis outbreaks in Iran using Ollerenshaw's fascioliasis risk index incorporating geographical information system (GIS). Using this index, a risk map of fascioliasis outbreaks for the entire country was developed. We determined that the country can be divided into 4 fascioliasis outbreak risk categories. Class 1, in which the Mt value is less than 100, includes mo

Global change includes climate change and climate variability, land use, water storage and irrigation, human population growth and urbanization, trade and travel, and chemical pollution. Impacts on vector-borne diseases, including malaria, dengue fever, infections by other arboviruses, schistosomiasis, trypanosomiasis, onchocerciasis, and leishmaniasis are reviewed. While climate change is global in nature and poses unknown future risks to humans and natural ecosystems, other local changes are occurring more rapidly on a global scale and are having significant effects on vector-borne diseases.

INTRODUCTION: Dengue fever has experienced a global rise in incidence and distribution, largely influenced by climate variability. Nonetheless, the specific climatic thresholds that trigger elevated dengue incidence rates, and the time lag between weather conditions and the case surges remain uncertain.
METHODS: Average weekly climate variables along with weekly dengue incidence rates from 2001 and 2022 were analyzed in districts grouped by its climate zone. A cross-correlation technique was used to determine the time lag between climatic variables and dengue incidence, while a fine-tuned reg

The emplacement of large igneous provinces (LIPs) is known to be a driver of climate change in Earth's past. However, the balance of climate warming through CO2 emission and cooling through weathering is poorly understood. To better understand the role of LIP emplacement on long-term climate change, here we utilize the SCION coupled climate-biogeochemical model which considers the impact of LIPs through degassing of CO2 and enhancement of local continental weathering rates. This approach results in better correspondence between the modelled output and proxy reconstructions of the period (espec

Malaria remains a major public health challenge in Colombia, with a significant increase in cases in recent years. Climate variables-particularly temperature and rainfall-are key drivers of malaria transmission, yet their lagged, non-linear effects across space and time are poorly characterized in the Colombian context. We conducted an ecological, spatiotemporal analysis using weekly malaria case data from 970 municipalities in Colombia (2013-2023) combined with satellite-derived climate data. We applied distributed lag non-linear models (DLNMs) embedded within a Bayesian hierarchical framewor

BACKGROUND: Haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is climate sensitive. HFRS-weather associations have been investigated by previous studies, but few of them looked into the interaction of meteorological factors on HFRS in different climate zones.
OBJECTIVE: We aim to explore the interactions and marginal effects of meteorological factors on HFRS in China.
METHODS: HFRS surveillance data and meteorological data were collected from 254 cities during 2006-2016. A monthly time-series study design and generalized estimating equation models were adopted to estimate the interactions and ma

BACKGROUND: Early warning systems (EWS) are management tools to predict the occurrence of epidemics of infectious diseases. While climate-based EWS have been developed for malaria, no standard protocol to evaluate and compare EWS has been proposed. Additionally, there are several neglected tropical diseases whose transmission is sensitive to environmental conditions, for which no EWS have been proposed, though they represent a large burden for the affected populations.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: In the present paper, an overview of the available linear and non-linear tools to predict sea

This study examines the spatiotemporal dynamics of Bacillus anthracis, the causative agent of anthrax, under climate change scenarios using advanced machine learning techniques. Climate change is increasingly recognized as a critical factor influencing the distribution and transmission dynamics of infectious diseases, particularly those reliant on environmental reservoirs. Our research employs Maximum Entropy (Maxent) modeling to forecast the current global distribution of B. anthracis based on climatic factors and to predict future habitat suitability under various Coupled Model Intercomparis

OBJECTIVES: At present, some studies have pointed out several possible climate drivers of bacillary dysentery. However, there is a complex nonlinear interaction between climate drivers and susceptible population in the spread of diseases, which makes it challenging to detect climate drivers at the size of susceptible population.
METHODS: By using empirical dynamic modeling (EDM), the climate drivers of bacillary dysentery dynamic were explored in China's five temperature zones.
RESULTS: We verified the availability of climate drivers and susceptible population size on bacillary dysentery, an

During the last glacial period, the Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS) underwent episodes of rapid iceberg discharge, recorded in ocean sediments as "Heinrich events" (HEs). Two competing models attempt to describe the stimulus for HEs via either internal ice sheet oscillations or external ocean-climate system forcing. We present a terrestrial record of HEs from the northeastern LIS that strongly supports ocean-climate forcing. Subglacial carbonate precipitates from Baffin Island record episodes of subglacial melting coincident with the three most recent HEs, resulting from acceleration of nearby mari

BACKGROUND: Leptospirosis remains a major public health concern in Sri Lanka, a country with a tropical climate conducive to transmission. Despite ongoing surveillance, there is limited evidence on the spatial and climatic determinants driving long-term disease dynamics. This study aimed to investigate the spatiotemporal distribution and climatic sensitivity of leptospirosis from 2009 to 2024 using advanced statistical modelling. METHODS: District-level monthly leptospirosis case data for the period 2009–2024 were obtained from the Epidemiology Unit of the Ministry of Health, Sri Lanka. Corres
