Successful implementation of evolutionary programs to rescue climatically threatened species requires identification of adaptive variation. Although many genotype-environment association methods have been successful in identifying adaptive variation, current approaches can be improved in two important aspects. First, most existing methods do not account for genotype uncertainty in widely available low-coverage whole-genome sequencing data. Researchers often restrict analysis to loci for which genotypes can be inferred reliably or call the most probable genotype, allowing the use of genotype-ba

Climate change is expected to heighten the risk of epidemics and outbreaks of coffee leaf rust (CLR), caused by the obligate parasite Hemileia vastatrix, as reported in the literature. While knowledge is available on rising temperatures' effects on CLR epidemiological processes, fewer studies have explored combined temperature and atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) impacts, with contrasting findings on CLR incidence and severity. CLR epidemics are multifactorial, and controlled-condition experiments targeting individual components help anticipate pathogen behavior under future climates. Uredinio

BACKGROUND: Climate change can lead to warmer environments, facilitating higher pathogen growth and increasing disease burden. Climate change can also reduce the nutritional value of food resources, causing malnutrition, which can lead to impaired immunity and disease vulnerability. However, despite these associations, no experiments have tested how dietary manipulations and temperature variations interact to drive the effects of pathogenic infections. In this work, we conducted laboratory experiments with the model insect Drosophila melanogaster to test these effects. RESULTS: Virgin flies ra

Peatlands play an essential role in the global carbon cycle, storing approximately one-third of the world's soil carbon despite covering less than 3% of the land surface. Peatland degradation from anthropogenic activities and climate change can convert peatlands from net carbon sinks to sources by altering carbon cycling. Net Ecosystem Exchange (NEE), the balance between CO2 uptake and emission, is a critical indicator for assessing peatland condition and restoration efforts. We conducted a systematic quantitative literature review to investigate global patterns of NEE in peatlands and identif

Assessing changes in mean sea level (MSL) has become increasingly critical due to the significance of climate changes. Soft computing techniques are now widely used to reduce the time and cost associated with traditional MSL estimation methods. Historical MSL data is frequently used to predict future values, yet the application of soft computing models to analyze climate change's impact on MSL remains relatively unexplored. This study aims to develop and compare various soft computing techniques for modeling MSL fluctuations using meteorological data. Random forest (RF), support vector regress

Understanding the ecological forces driving lead (Pb) translocation, distribution, and accumulation in plant‒soil ecosystems under elevated CO2 (eCO2) is essential for optimizing phytoremediation strategies and predicting Pb cycling dynamics. This study systematically investigated Pb availability and desorption kinetics in a root-soil ecosystem with the metal-tolerant plant Trifolium repens L., using diffusive gradients in thin films (DGTs), fluorescence spectroscopy, and kinetic modelling. Our results show that eCO2 increased free Pb2+(aq) concentrations by 217.6-416.0 %, while concurrently r

The paper aims to enable a comprehensive definition for a Circular Economy (CE) that will support its effective introduction in the building and construction sectors. According to the European Commission (EC), the building sector in 2020 accounted for 40 % of the primary energy demand in the European Union (EU) and 37 % of its greenhouse gas emissions. Thus, the sector can play a crucial role in decarbonisation and hence in achieving a zero-emissions future in response to climate change. A CE aims to harmonise economic growth with environmental protection and is based on the concept of closing

A promising approach to improve cloud parameterizations within climate models and thus climate projections is to use deep learning in combination with training data from storm-resolving model (SRM) simulations. The ICOsahedral Non-hydrostatic (ICON) modeling framework permits simulations ranging from numerical weather prediction to climate projections, making it an ideal target to develop neural network (NN) based parameterizations for sub-grid scale processes. Within the ICON framework, we train NN based cloud cover parameterizations with coarse-grained data based on realistic regional and gl

In times of climate change, practicing a form of sustainable, climate-resilient and productive agriculture is of primordial importance. Compost could be one form of sustainable fertilizer, which is increasing humus, water holding capacity, and nutrient contents of soils. It could thereby strengthen agriculture toward the adverse effects of climate change, especially when additionally combined with biochar. To get access to sufficient amounts of suitable materials for composting, resources, which are currently treated as waste, such as human excreta, could be a promising option. However, the sa

In the context of global climate change, sudden rainstorms and typhoons induce fluctuations in hydraulic shocks to wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in coastal areas, causing two challenges of stable effluent quality and low-carbon operation. We established a quantitative evaluation method for resistance of wastewater treatment processes to hydraulic shocks based on the water-energy-carbon nexus using operational data from a WWTP in southeast coastal China from July 2018 to December 2022. The effects of hydraulic shocks on the operational stability of the anaerobic-anoxic-oxic-membrane biore

Climate change due to the carbon footprint left by the modern lifestyle has become an irrefutable topic in today's media. The healthcare sector alone contributes ca. 5% of the world's CO2 emissions of which 25% comes from the operating theater. In order to spare personnel costs for sterilization, most medical suppliers of operating equipment have switched to the use of disposable products. In our pilot project in the department for thoracic surgery, we aim to recycle disposable Ethicon staplers used regularly in almost every operating theater. Since August 2022 we have succeeded in making the

Early diagnosis of acute kidney injury (AKI) is an important step to improve AKI outcome. In Asia, several distinct conditions of this region such as environment (tropical climate), socioeconomic status (high-resource and low-resource settings), process of care (shortage of nephrologists), exposure factors (specific tropical infections such as leptospirosis, malaria, dengue), and inherent factor (aging) make the diagnosis of AKI in Asia more challenging than in other parts of the world. To improve the diagnosis of AKI, novel tools such as clinical risk scores, AKI alert systems, and telemedici

Basing on their psychophysiological, immunological and clinical findings, the authors emphasize the role of chronic infection, occupational hazards, adaptation to new climatic and social environment in pathogenesis of neurocirculatory asthenia (NA). The disease is also associated with sensitization to streptococcus, allergization, adverse effects of circulating immune complexes, impaired relationships between CNS and immune system. It is suggested that NA arises consequently to genetic determination of regulation process desynchronization. A new effective NA treatment is proposed comprising in

Climate change and increasing thermal stress represent major challenges for intensive pig production systems, affecting animal performance, welfare, and farm profitability. In this context, integrative models such as ThermiPig are increasingly used to simulate the combined effects of climate, housing, and animal responses on swine production performance. However, the complexity of these models requires a better understanding of how input parameters influence simulation outputs. This study applied a two-step global sensitivity analysis to investigate the influence of nine biological, environmen

To address societal challenges - such as combating climate change - people have to invest in collective goals rather than pursuing selfish objectives. However, prior neuroscientific research has often revealed that reward-motivation is enhanced for self-relevant gains. Here, we draw on social psychological research showing that people have a strong desire to be moral, to examine whether the motivation for investing effort toward collective goals can be increased by appealing to people's desire to be a morally responsible person. We conducted an ERP study examining how a moral appeal influences

Microbial necromass carbon (MNC) is increasingly recognized as a major contributor to persistent soil organic carbon (SOC), yet its response to climate warming and the underlying regulatory mechanisms remain poorly understood. Here, we conducted a global meta-analysis to assess how total MNC, fungal necromass carbon (FNC), and bacterial necromass carbon (BNC) respond to warming and to identify the key drivers. Overall, warming had no significant net effect on total MNC, FNC, or BNC across all observations, although publication bias-corrected analyses revealed a significant 8.6% increase in FNC

Climate change is reshaping terrestrial ecosystems across East Asia, driving substantial shifts in leaf area index (LAI) and vegetation productivity. These changes in vegetation activity directly affect biogenic volatile organic compound (BVOC) emissions, which in turn influence secondary air pollutants such as ozone (O3) and biogenic secondary organic aerosols (BSOA). We quantify the impact of LAI variability on regional air quality using the WRF-Chem model coupled with the MEGAN biogenic emissions module. We conducted two simulations for August 2024: a baseline case using default 2003 LAI fi

Climate change amplifies many threats to human health. Despite advances in understanding climate change dynamics and impacts, there remains a critical gap in translating scientific knowledge into equitable, and community-driven health interventions. The inaugural One Earth, One Health workshop sought to explore this gap through human-centered design exercises involving interdisciplinary researchers from climate and Earth sciences, engineering, epidemiology, microbiology, and environmental health. Although participants did not co-develop solutions with affected communities, they used stakeholde

Global warming is one of the most pressing and critical problems facing the world today. It is mainly caused by the increase in greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, such as carbon dioxide (CO2). Understanding how soils respond to rising temperatures is critical for predicting carbon release and informing climate mitigation strategies. Q10, a measure of soil microbial respiration, quantifies the increase in CO2 release caused by a [Formula: see text] Celsius rise in temperature, serving as a key indicator of this sensitivity. However, predicting Q10 across diverse soil types remains a challenge,

Shallow inter-tidal ecosystems such as rockpools provide important insights into the ongoing climatic changes and their consequences. We studied the diurnal and seasonal variations in carbon chemistry and associated physicochemical parameters of intertidal rockpools along the central west coast of India for four years. The temperature (26 °C-39 °C), salinity (3-55), pHT (7.79-9.27) and other carbon parameters exhibited a huge variation in the studied rockpools. These significant variabilities were observed in the parameters among seasons and low to high intertidal transition (tidal zone). Ecos
