Characterization of submicron particles during biomass burning and coal combustion periods in Beijing, China.

An Aerodyne high-resolution time-of-flight aerosol mass spectrometer (HR-ToF-AMS) was deployed along with other observation instruments to measure the characteristics of PM1 (particulate matter with a vacuum aerodynamic diameter of ≤1μm) during the biomass burning period (October 1 to 27; BBP) and the coal combustion period (December 10 to 31; CCP) in Beijing in 2014. The average PM1 mass concentrations during the BBP and CCP were 82.3 and 37.5μgm(-3), respectively. Nitrate, ammonium and other pollutants emitted by the burning processes, especially coal combustion, increased significantly in a…

Gas emissions, minerals, and tars associated with three coal fires, Powder River Basin, USA.

Ground-based surveys of three coal fires and airborne surveys of two of the fires were conducted near Sheridan, Wyoming. The fires occur in natural outcrops and in abandoned mines, all containing Paleocene-age subbituminous coals. Diffuse (carbon dioxide (CO(2)) only) and vent (CO(2), carbon monoxide (CO), methane, hydrogen sulfide (H(2)S), and elemental mercury) emission estimates were made for each of the fires. Additionally, gas samples were collected for volatile organic compound (VOC) analysis and showed a large range in variation between vents. The fires produce locally dangerous levels …

Potential flue gas impurities in carbon dioxide streams separated from coal-fired power plants.

For geological sequestration of carbon dioxide (CO2) separated from pulverized coal combustion flue gas, it is necessary to adequately evaluate the potential impacts of flue gas impurities on groundwater aquifers in the case of the CO2 leakage from its storage sites. This study estimated the flue gas impurities to be included in the CO2 stream separated from a CO2 control unit for a different combination of air pollution control devices and different flue gas compositions. Specifically, the levels of acid gases and mercury vapor were estimated for the monoethanolamine (MEA)-based absorption pr…

Novel regenerable sorbent for mercury capture from flue gases of coal-fired power plant.

A natural chabazite-based silver nanocomposite (AgMC) was synthesized to capture mercury from flue gases of coal-fired power plants. Silver nanoparticles were engineered on zeolite through ion-exchange of sodium ions with silver ions, followed by thermal annealing. Mercury sorption test using AgMC was performed at various temperatures by exposing it to either pulse injection of mercury or continuous mercury flow. A complete capture of mercury by AgMC was achieved up to a capture temperature of 250 degrees C. Nano silver particles were shown to be the main active component for mercury capture b…

Understanding mercury transformations in coal-fired power plants: evaluation of homogeneous Hg oxidation mechanisms.

Homogeneous mercury oxidation mechanisms described by Niksa and Qiu, and three theoretical mercury oxidation reaction rate constants developed by Wilcox were evaluated for their predictions of the extent of mercury oxidation under coal combustion conditions. Predictions were compared to results from bench-scale experiments to determine whether such models were suitable for predicting measured levels of homogeneous mercury oxidation. Experiments considered different flue gas compositions (O2, Cl, NO, and SO2) and quench rates to provide a broad range of conditions for analysis. Regardless of th…

Assessment of air pollution indices in opencast coal mining complex--an Indian case study.

India is world's third largest coal-producing country and to meet the future energy demand it will have to produce coal at a faster rate. The coal by opencast mining has been about 80% of the total production. This paper focuses on some of the key air pollution problems arising from increased use of opencast mining. It examines the utility of an Air Pollution Index (API) for tackling air pollution problems. A fact-finding survey was conducted to evaluate the status of air pollution due to opencast coal mining in Jharia Coalfield of Bharat Coking Coal Ltd. The approach for the selection of air …

Nitric oxide reduction in coal combustion: role of char surface complexes in heterogeneous reactions.

Nitrogen oxides are one of the major environmental problems arising from fossil fuel combustion. Coal char is relatively rich in nitrogen, and so this is an important source of nitrogen oxides during coal combustion. However, due to its carbonaceous nature, char can also reduce NO through heterogeneous reduction. The objectives of this work were on one hand to compare NO emissions from coal combustion in two different types of equipment and on the other hand to study the influence of char surface chemistry on NO reduction. A series of combustion tests were carried out in two different scale de…

Coal tar, pine tar and sulfonated shale oil preparations: comparative activity, efficacy and safety.

BACKGROUND: Tar and sulfonated shale oil preparations are used in the treatment of a variety of inflammatory skin diseases, including psoriasis vulgaris; due to the high polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) content of tars, a possible relationship with cancer in humans has been postulated. On the other hand, the purity of sulfonated shale oils concerning PAHs guarantees a good tolerability during dermatologic therapy. AIM: In this review, it is attempted to compare activity, efficacy and safety of coal tar, pine tar and sulfonated shale oil preparations which currently play a role in dermato…

Health risks of SO2 released from coal-fired plants: a model for general evaluations.

A model recently proposed for evaluation of health risks from airborne effluents released by the nuclear cycle is applied to SO2 release by coal-fired plants. The main feature of the model is that it makes such evaluations extremely simple by not requiring any detailed knowledge of the local concentrations of the pollutant considered. A schematization of the behavior of the pollutant into the atmosphere is proposed taking into account deposition and SO2-SO4 conversion. An example of application is worked out and discussed.

Geochemical controls on the fate and mobility of coal combustion product-derived elements in a dolomitic aquifer.

Coal combustion products (CCPs) can release elements of concern into groundwater, posing risks to drinking water and ecosystems, yet their behavior in carbonate aquifers remains poorly understood. This study investigated the fate and mobility of seven elements (As, B, Cd, Cu, Cr, Mo, Ni) at a CCP disposal site overlying a dolomitic aquifer in the southeastern United States. CCP-impacted wells showed Ca-Mg-SO4 type waters with elevated sulfate concentrations (460-635 mg/L) compared to background Ca-Mg-HCO3 waters. Boron (0.13-4.5 mg/L) and Mo (0.10-2.9 mg/L) were the most mobile elements and ex…

Effects of sodium on nitrogen evolution characteristics during the fast co-pyrolysis of coal and biomass.

The co-combustion of biomass and coal is a crucial initiative for advancing carbon neutrality. However, the specific influence of alkali metals on nitrogen evolution during fast co-pyrolysis remains unclear. This study investigates the regulatory effects of sodium (Na) on the migration and transformation of volatile-N and char-N during the rapid pyrolysis and co-pyrolysis of sawdust (SD) and lignite coal (LC). Acid-washed and Na-loaded samples, including individual SD/LC and blended samples (blending ratios of 5% and 15%), were pyrolyzed in a vertical fixed-bed reactor at 500 °C and 800 °C. Th…

The canary in the coal mine: inequitable healthcare for those living with multimorbidity in Aotearoa New Zealand.

New Zealand's 2001 Primary Health Care Strategy set a bold goal of reducing health inequities through a population health approach with innovative models of care and a revised funding framework. Twenty-five years later, significant disparities persist. This paper utilises recent literature alongside a case study derived from a recent evaluation of a long-term conditions programme in primary care. The evaluation found significant barriers to a successful model of care. These included a generic user-pays model that did not accommodate low health literacy, poverty-related constraints, geographic

Studies on the Properties of Modified Sulfonated Acetone Formaldehyde Polycondensate as a Dispersant for Coal-Water Slurry.

As a dispersant for coal-water slurry (CWS), sulfonated acetone formaldehyde condensate dispersant (SAF) has advantages in synthesis process, cost, and performance, but its application in the industrial production of CWS is constrained due to its weak adsorption affinity with the coal surface, especially as the desorption phenomenon becomes more pronounced with increasing temperature. In this paper, the modification of SAF was conducted to achieve effective adsorption on the coal surface and a wider temperature adaptation range. The molecular structure of the modified SAF (MSAF) was characteri…

Effect of Coal Particles on Bed Characteristics and Their Motion Behavior in a Gas-Solid Separation Bed.

Air-dense medium fluidized beds have attracted more attention due to their unique advantage of forming a density bed suitable for coal separation without water participation. However, the detailed effects of coal particles on separation fluidization are not yet fully understood. In this study, the effects of feeding particles on bed fluidization characteristics and bed voidage (including single emulsion phase and bubbling state), as well as their motion behavior, are investigated comprehensively. The results indicate that the initial critical fluidization velocity decreases when a middle- or h…

Isolation and assessment of antibiotic resistance of Staphylococcus aureus in the air of an underground hard coal mines.

Mine aerosol poses a serious health threat due to its easy access to the human respiratory tract. Damage may be caused by the chemical composition of dust and the substances adsorbed on its surface, including microorganisms that potentially affect human health. Our proposed research aimed to isolate Staphylococcus aureus strains from coal mine bioaerosol and to assess its sensitivity towards selected antibiotics. Bioaerosol samples were collected in three underground hard coal mines located in Upper Silesia in southern Poland. Microbiological tests of the air samples were carried out according…

Effect of Temperature and Pressure on Effective Stress Coefficient and Permeability Prediction Model in Coal Reservoirs.

Effective stress is a critical factor governing the deformation behavior and pore-permeability characteristics of deep coal reservoirs. Accurate determination of the effective stress relies heavily on the effective stress coefficient (α). However, the variation pattern of the effective stress coefficient under thermo-mechanical coupling conditions is not yet fully understood, which impedes precise permeability prediction. To address this issue, permeability experiments were performed on coal samples of different ranks under varying temperatures and confining pressures. By comparing the classic…
