Abstract The current study examined specific emotional, behavioral, and cognitive variables that may distinguish obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) from generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social phobia (SoP), and separation anxiety disorder (SAD) in youth. Youth with OCD (n=26) and other anxiety disorders (ADs; n=31), aged 7-12 years (56.1% males), and their parents participated. The study compared the two anxious groups on levels of emotional, behavioral, and cognitive functioning, as well as impairment associated with the disorder. Results indicated that in comparison to youth with GAD, So

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorders (BD) rank among the most disabling conditions, affecting millions worldwide. Cognitive impairment in BD is linked with brain changes and worse functional outcomes. Obesity and metabolic syndrome (MetSy) are overrepresented in BD and are associated with more pronounced brain structural and cognitive alterations in the general population. Here, we studied for the first time the contribution of metabolic dysfunction to both brain and cognitive alterations in BD.
METHODS: We recruited 163 participants (76 individuals with BD, 87 controls). We used principal component

Neurocognitive disorders (NCDs) encompass various conditions that affect cognition and functioning in activities of daily living. Although many types of NCDs lack curative therapy, medications may be used to ameliorate cognitive as well as behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). Medications classified as acetylcholinesterase inhibitors, N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antagonists, and antiamyloid monoclonal antibodies target cognitive symptoms. For BPSD, antidepressants, antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, anxiolytics, and stimulants have been studied. Selection of pharmacotherap

PURPOSE: Chronic pain is closely related to frailty. However, the corresponding associated factors are poorly understood. Given that sleep disorders (SDs) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) are common associated factors for frailty, this study aimed to explore the association between SDs, MCI, and frailty in adults with chronic pain.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional study.
METHODS: A total of 431 participants, including 175 individuals with frailty and 256 individuals without frailty, were recruited. Participants were assessed for chronic pain, frailty, MCI, and SDs. Three multivariate logistic mode

INTRODUCTION: The Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) is widely utilized in clinical settings for cognitive screening, yet its diagnostic accuracy is often influenced by demographic factors such as educational attainment. This study investigates the educational gradient in MMSE performance and evaluates whether uniform cutoff scores adequately distinguish cognitively normal (CN), mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients across different educational strata.
METHODS: A total of 300 older adults (CN = 100; MCI = 100; AD = 100) were retrospectively recruited from th

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is an established contributor to neurocognitive impairment and a major modifiable risk factor for dementia. However, the extent to which lifetime AUD interacts with aging to accelerate subtle cognitive trajectories prior to overt clinical dementia remains unclear.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether a lifetime history of DSM-5 AUD and correlated indices of alcohol consumption are associated with accelerated age-related cognitive decline in middle-aged and older adults.
METHODS: Participants (N = 1,421) were drawn from the Collaborative Study on the Geneti

BACKGROUND: Cancer cachexia is observed in more than 50% of advanced cancer patients, and impairs quality of life and prognosis. A variety of pathways are likely to be dysregulated. Hence, a broad-spectrum understanding of the disease process is best achieved by a discovery based approach such as proteomics.
RESULTS: More than 300 proteins were identified with > 95% confidence in correct sequence identification, of which 5-10% were significantly differentially expressed in cachectic tissues (p-value of 0.05; 27 proteins from gastrocnemius, 34 proteins from soleus and 24 proteins from heart).

INTRODUCTION: Although prior studies have observed speech alterations in schizophrenia, minimal research has focused on this in schizotypal personality disorder (SPD), despite impairments observed in social communication and function. SPD is a disorder within the schizophrenia spectrum, but individuals are typically antipsychotic naïve and lack a history of psychiatric hospitalizations. The current study examined acoustic features extracted from an open-ended interview in individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorders and healthy controls.
METHODS: Twenty-seven individuals with SPD, 36 ind

Functional impairment often persists in bipolar disorder despite symptomatic remission. Cognitive reserve (CR) has been proposed as a protective factor that may influence recovery. This cross-sectional study examined the association between CR and functional outcome among euthymic individuals with Bipolar I Disorder (BD-I). Eighty-four outpatients with DSM-5 BD-I attending a tertiary-care teaching hospital in Puducherry, India, were assessed using the Lifetime of Experiences Questionnaire (LEQ) and the Functioning Assessment Short Test (FAST). Higher CR was significantly associated with better

Schoolchildren nowadays encounter multiple challenges within the teaching process. Learning disabilities (LD) are characterized as complex conditions that affect academic achievement and cognitive performance. LD are typically linked to neurodevelopmental and genetic factors. However, emerging evidence suggests they may be associated with gastrointestinal (GI) pathologies, including celiac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, gastroesophageal reflux disease and Helicobacter pylori infection. The aforementioned GI disorders have been (indirectly) linked with a spectrum

Cognitive neurofunctional disorders (NFDs) and dissociative amnesia (DA) are distinct clinical entities, although they may share common pathophysiological mechanisms, vulnerabilities, and risk factors. When carefully assessed, cognitive neurofunctional disorders appear to be relatively common in memory clinics, accounting for up to 20% of consultations. The widespread adoption of the term "functional" over the past decade reflects the non-organic nature of these disorders and is generally well understood by patients. This terminology has progressively replaced earlier terms such as "psychogeni

IMPORTANCE: Opioid use disorder (OUD) impacts millions of people worldwide. Prior studies investigating its underpinning neural mechanisms have not often considered how brain signals evolve over time, so it remains unclear whether brain dynamics are altered in OUD and have subsequent behavioral implications.
OBJECTIVE: To characterize brain dynamic alterations and their association with cognitive control in individuals with OUD.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This case-control study collected functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data from individuals with OUD and healthy control

Sudden gains are associated with better acute and follow-up outcomes in cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for mood and anxiety disorders. Using the group CBT for seasonal affective disorder (CBT-SAD) condition (n=88) from a parent randomized clinical trial, this study examines whether sudden gains can be detected in CBT-SAD and whether they relate to outcome at post-treatment and at follow-ups one and two winters later. Applying Kelly et al.'s (2005) criteria to week-to-week symptom changes [i.e., scores on the Structured Interview Guide for the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression-Seasonal A

BACKGROUND: Desvenlafaxine, a serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, has demonstrated efficacy in improving affective symptoms of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD); however, its effects on associated cognitive and functional difficulties remain underexplored. This study seeks to assess the antidepressant effects of desvenlafaxine in patients with SSRI-resistant MDD, its impact on both objective and subjective cognitive performance, where cognitive improvements occur independently of clinical recovery or not, and its influence on psychosocial functioning.
METHODS: An observational case-con

This study aimed to investigate changes in cognitive reappraisal as a mechanism of the unified protocol (UP) for emotional disorders. Data were collected as part of a larger randomized clinical equivalence trial that assessed the efficacy of the UP, a transdiagnostic cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), relative to well-established single-disorder protocols and a wait-list control. The present sample included 132 individuals with primary diagnoses of panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, or obsessive-compulsive disorder who were randomized to either the UP or th

Cognitive disorders present significant medical and social challenges nowadays, due to their high prevalence, progressive course and a lack of effective methods for treatment of neurodegenerative diseases and comorbid pathologies. An important area of research is the identification of molecular biomarkers that reflect early pathophysiological changes and facilitate a more accurate biological characterization of cognitive impairment. This study provides an overview of the most relevant signaling molecules for diagnosing cognitive disorders. It presents data on the effectiveness of using compreh

Cognitive dysfunctions are one of the key symptoms of schizophrenia (SZ) and major depressive disorder (MDD), which exist not only during the onset of diseases but also before the onset, even after the remission of psychiatric symptoms. With the development of neuroimaging techniques, these non-invasive approaches provide valuable insights into the underlying pathogenesis of psychiatric disorders and information of cognitive remediation interventions. This review synthesizes existing neuroimaging studies to examine domains of cognitive impairment, particularly processing speed, memory, attenti

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative condition that is frequently associated with cognitive disorders. These can arise directly from the primary disease, or be triggered by external factors in susceptible individuals due to PD or other predisposing factors. The cognitive disorders encompass PD-associated cognitive impairment (PD-CI), delirium, PD treatment-associated cognitive side effects, cognitive non-motor fluctuations, and PD-associated psychosis. Accurate diagnosis of delirium is crucial because it often stems from an underlying disease that may be severe and require specific
