Neurocognitive Predictors of Understanding of Intentions in Parkinson Disease.

OBJECTIVES: Theory of Mind (ToM), the ability to understand other people's mental states, is essential in everyday social interactions. The … s, relationship between the severity of the illness and understanding of intentions was mediated by cognitive flexibility. CONCLUSION: In PD, understanding of intentions is related to neurocognition, with working memory and cognitive flexibility playing a crucial role. The severity of PD predicts ToM performance.

Cell-Type-Specific Contributions of Medial Prefrontal Neurons to Flexible Behaviors.

Behavioral flexibility and impulse control are necessary for successful execution of adaptive behavior. They are impaired in patients with d … r behavioral flexibility. Together, our findings confirm the role of corticostriatal projections in cognitive flexibility and identify corticothalamic neurons as equally important for behavioral flexibility.

Systemic inflammation in Aβ1-40-induced Alzheimer's disease model: New translational opportunities.

Alzheimer disease (AD) is the most frequent cause of dementia, and the most common neurodegenerative disease, which is characterized by memo … ic inflammatory manifestations in rats with Aβ1-40-induced AD. The impairment of spatial memory and cognitive flexibility in Aβ1-40-lesioned rats was accompanied by pronounced systemic inflammation, which was confirmed by commonly accepted biomarkers: increased hematological indices of systemic inflammation (NLR, dNLR, LMR, PLR and SII), signs of anemia of inflammation …

Executive functioning and spatial processing in anorexia nervosa: an experimental study and its significance for the allocentric lock theory.

PURPOSE: The allocentric lock theory (ALT) suggests that people with eating disorders have difficulties in multisensory integration in two reference frames-egocentric and allocentric, whereby the egocentric, but not allocentric, is impaired. This leads to a distorted body image that contributes to the development and maintenance of the disorder. The current study aimed to explore a facet of the ALT, namely, the visuo-spatial aspect, and its relation to cognitive flexibility in patients with anorexia nervosa (AN). METHODS: Fifty-five participants took part in the study: 20 AN patients and 35 c…

Impaired reversal learning in an animal model of anorexia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Clinical investigations indicate that anorexia nervosa (AN) is associated with impaired cognitive flexibility. Activity-based anorexia (ABA), a rodent behavioral model of AN, is characterized by compulsive wheel running associated with voluntary food restriction and progressive weight loss. The goal of this study was to test whether ABA is associated with impaired cognitive flexibility. METHODS: Female Sprague-Dawley rats were trained to perform the attentional set-shifting test (ASST) to assess cognitive flexibility, including capacity for set-shifting and reversal learning. Rats…

Cognitive Aging Patterns in Autism: Parallel, Accelerated, or Safeguarded?

PURPOSE: Research in autism has historically focused on childhood, leaving cognitive aging in autistic adults poorly understood. This study … ts scored lower than non-autistic individuals on measures of processing speed, episodic memory, and cognitive flexibility, and reported greater executive difficulties. Age-related effects were similar between groups across most domains, except episodic memory, which declined only in non-autistic adults, suggesting a safeguarded pattern in autism, linked to more efficie …

Processing speed delays contribute to executive function deficits in individuals with agenesis of the corpus callosum.

Corpus callosum malformation and dysfunction are increasingly recognized causes of cognitive and behavioral disability. Individuals with agenesis of the corpus callosum (AgCC) offer unique insights regarding the cognitive skills that depend specifically upon callosal connectivity. We examined the impact of AgCC on cognitive inhibition, flexibility, and processing speed using the Color-Word Interference Test (CWIT) and Trail Making Test (TMT) from the Delis-Kaplan Executive Function System. We compared 36 individuals with AgCC and IQs within the normal range to 56 matched controls. The AgCC coh

Stable individual differences from dynamic patterns of function: brain network flexibility predicts openness/intellect, intelligence, and psychoticism.

A growing understanding of the nature of brain function has led to increased interest in interpreting the properties of large-scale brain networks. Methodological advances in network neuroscience provide means to decompose these networks into smaller functional communities and measure how they reconfigure over time as an index of their dynamic and flexible properties. Recent evidence has identified associations between flexibility and a variety of traits pertaining to complex cognition including creativity and working memory. The present study used measures of dynamic resting-state functional

Psychological Flexibility, Coping Styles, and Mood Among Individuals With Cystic Fibrosis.

OBJECTIVE: An emerging body of evidence suggests that psychological flexibility may be an important and underexamined determinant of overall psychological functioning. The chronic nature of cystic fibrosis (CF) may require a greater level of flexibility to navigate complex and dynamic health concerns in an increasingly aging population. METHODS: We examined associations between psychological flexibility, coping styles, psychological grit, and negative affectivity (anxiety and depressive symptoms) from baseline assessments of randomized trials among adults with CF. Regression models controllin

5HTT is associated with the phenotype psychological flexibility: results from a randomized clinical trial.

Adaption to changing environments is evolutionarily advantageous. Studies that link genetic and phenotypic expression of flexible adjustment to one's context are largely lacking. In this study, we tested the importance of psychological flexibility, or goal-related context sensitivity, in an interaction between psychotherapy outcome for panic disorder with agoraphobia (PD/AG) and a genetic polymorphism. Given the established role of the 5HTT-LPR polymorphism in behavioral flexibility, we tested whether this polymorphism (short group vs. long group) impacted therapy response as a function of var

The effects of height-for-age and HIV on cognitive development of school-aged children in Nairobi, Kenya: a structural equation modelling analysis.

BACKGROUND: Empirical evidence indicates that both HIV infection and stunting impede cognitive functions of school-going children. However, there is less evidence on how these two risk factors amplify each other's negative effects. This study aimed to examine the direct effects of stunting on cognitive outcomes and the extent to which stunting (partially) mediates the effects of HIV, age, and gender on cognitive outcomes. METHODOLOGY: We applied structural equation modelling to cross-sectional data from 328 children living with HIV and 260 children living without HIV aged 6-14 years from Nair
