From Control to Clue: Integrating Olfaction into the Object-Choice Task for Domestic Dogs (Canis familiaris).

Humans rely heavily on vision for information-gathering, decision-making, and communication, making it difficult to imagine how our perception of the world might change if our primary sensory modality were entirely different. Dogs (Canis familiaris), for instance, rely as much or more on olfaction as on vision in information-gathering. Nonetheless, canine cognition research has largely emphasized visual tasks. In the present study (N = 48 dogs) we aim to begin to remedy this by designing an olfactory version of a prototypical dog-cognition experimental design: the object choice test. In the st

Lavandula angustifolia and Echium amoenum as emerging adjuncts to cognitive behavioral therapy for major depressive disorder: mechanistic insights into neurotrophic, monoaminergic, and anti-inflammatory pathways.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) represents a complex psychiatric disorder characterized by the interplay of psychological, neurobiological, and inflammatory factors. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is recognized as the primary non-pharmacological intervention; nevertheless, a significant number of individual's experience either partial or delayed therapeutic outcomes, thereby underscoring the necessity for safe adjunctive approaches. Lavandula angustifolia (lavender) and Echium amoenum have been identified as promising phytotherapeutic options exhibiting antidepressant and anxiolytic effect

Neuropsychiatric Symptoms Present Differently in Individuals with Different High-Risk States of Dementia.

UNLABELLED: <p>Introduction: Neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) are common in neurocognitive disorders. However, the differences in presentation of NPS in high-risk states for dementia such as mild neurocognitive disorder (Mild NCD) and remitted major depressive disorder (rMDD) remain unclear. The purpose of this study was to compare the frequency and factor structure of NPS in Mild NCD, rMDD, and Mild NCD with rMDD (Mild NCD-rMDD). METHODS: We analyzed baseline data from the multicenter Prevention of Alzheimer's Dementia with Cognitive Remediation plus Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation in…

Central auditory processing deficits in schizophrenia: Effects of auditory-based cognitive training.

BACKGROUND: Sensory processing abnormalities are common in schizophrenia (SZ) and impact everyday functions, such as speech perception in noisy environments. Auditory-based targeted cognitive training (TCT) is a "bottom up" cognitive remediation intervention designed to enhance the speed and accuracy of low-level auditory information processing. However, the effects of TCT on behavioral measures of central auditory processing (CAP) and the role of CAP function on verbal learning outcomes in SZ are unknown. METHODS: SZ (n = 42) and healthy subjects (CTL; n = 18) underwent comprehensive clinica…

Evaluation of dose-dependent treatment effects after mid-trial dose escalation in biomarker, clinical, and cognitive outcomes for gantenerumab or solanezumab in dominantly inherited Alzheimer's disease.

INTRODUCTION: While the Dominantly Inherited Alzheimer Network Trials Unit (DIAN-TU) was ongoing, external data suggested higher doses were needed to achieve targeted effects; therefore, doses of gantenerumab were increased 5-fold, and solanezumab was increased 4-fold. We evaluated to what extent mid-trial dose increases produced a dose-dependent treatment effect. METHODS: Using generalized linear mixed effects (LME) models, we estimated the annual low- and high-dose treatment effects in clinical, cognitive, and biomarker outcomes. RESULTS: Both gantenerumab and solanezumab demonstrated dose

Semaglutide, a novel glucagon-like peptide-1 agonist, amends experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis-induced multiple sclerosis in mice: Involvement of the PI3K/Akt/GSK-3β pathway.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disabling neurodegenerative disease that causes demyelination and axonal degeneration of the central nervous system. Current treatments are partially effective in managing MS relapses and have a negligible impact on treating MS cognitive deficits and cannot enhance neuronal remyelination, imposing a need for a new MS remedy. Semaglutide, a novel glucagon-like peptide-1 agonist, has recently displayed a neuroprotective effect on several neurodegenerative diseases, suggesting that it may have a protective effect in MS. Therefore, this study was conducted to investiga

A pilot randomized controlled trial of the Occupational Goal Intervention method for the improvement of executive functioning in patients with treatment-resistant schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia is a chronic disabling mental disorder that involves impairments in several cognitive domains, especially in executive functions (EF), as well as impairments in functional performance. This is particularly true in patients with Treatment-Resistant Schizophrenia (TRS). The aim of this study was to test the efficacy of the Occupational Goal Intervention (OGI) method for the improvement of EF in patients with TRS. In this randomized, controlled, single-blind pilot study, 25 TRS patients were randomly assigned to attend 30 sessions of either OGI or craft activities (control) over a 1

Cognitive correlates of antisaccade behaviour across multiple neurodegenerative diseases.

Oculomotor tasks generate a potential wealth of behavioural biomarkers for neurodegenerative diseases. Overlap between oculomotor and disease-impaired circuitry reveals the location and severity of disease processes via saccade parameters measured from eye movement tasks such as prosaccade and antisaccade. Existing studies typically examine few saccade parameters in single diseases, using multiple separate neuropsychological test scores to relate oculomotor behaviour to cognition; however, this approach produces inconsistent, ungeneralizable results and fails to consider the cognitive heteroge

Interventions to improve executive functions and self-awareness in the early phase post-traumatic brain injury: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive rehabilitation guidelines addressing executive function and self-awareness impairments post-traumatic brain injury (post-TBI) involve metacognitive-strategy interventions. However, studies informing these interventions were conducted predominantly in the chronic phase, potentially limiting their applicability to earlier phases. OBJECTIVE: To examine the effectiveness of cognitive interventions for improving executive function or self-awareness early post-TBI. METHODS: Psycinfo, Ovid Medline, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Cochrane, and Embase

Adaptogenic and Neuroprotective Effects of the Thai Herbal Formula AYW-KK-04 Against Chronic Stress-Induced Cognitive Impairment.

Background/Objectives: Unpredictable chronic mild stress exposure is a primary driver of cognitive decline, largely mediated by hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis dysregulation and subsequent oxidative neurotoxicity. In traditional Thai medicine, the AYW-KK-04 formulation-a complex polyherbal remedy-has long been utilized as a "Ya Aayu-Wattana" to restore vitality and elemental balance, yet its neurobiological mechanisms remain poorly understood. This study aimed to evaluate the adaptogenic and neuroprotective potential of AYW-KK-04 against cognitive impairment. Methods: Unpredictable C

Reasoning training in veteran and civilian traumatic brain injury with persistent mild impairment.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a chronic health condition. The prevalence of TBI, combined with limited advances in protocols to mitigate persistent TBI-related impairments in higher order cognition, present a significant challenge. In this randomised study (n = 60), we compared the benefits of Strategic Memory Advanced Reasoning Training (SMART, n = 31), a strategy-based programme shown to improve cognitive control, versus an active learning programme called Brain Health Workshop (BHW, n = 29) in individuals with TBI with persistent mild functional deficits. Outcomes were measured on cogniti
