Structural MRI Correlates of Cognitive Event-Related Potentials in Multiple Sclerosis.

PURPOSE: Cognitive impairment in multiple sclerosis has been associated with cognitive event-related potentials and MRI abnormalities. This study aims to explore for the first time the association between P300 and MRI in multiple sclerosis. METHODS: Fifty-eight relapsing-remitting patients (41.5 ± 10.5 years old, 41 women, disease duration 139.7 ± 84.9 months) and 51 healthy controls were used. Visual P300 responses and a set of 2- or 3-dimensional MRI indices were obtained. Neuropsychological testing and psychological evaluations were also performed. RESULTS: Multiple sclerosis patients had

Cognitive-Motivational Determinants of Residents' Civic Engagement and Health (Inequities) in the Context of Noise Action Planning: A Conceptual Model.

The Environmental Noise Directive expects residents to be actively involved in localising and selecting noise abatement interventions during the noise action planning process. Its intervention impact is meant to be homogeneous across population groups. Against the background of social heterogeneity and environmental disparities, however, the impact of noise action planning on exposure to traffic-related noise and its health effects is unlikely to follow homogenous distributions. Until now, there has been no study evaluating the impact of noise action measures on the social distribution of traf

Executive dysfunction in adults with moyamoya disease is associated with increased diffusion in frontal white matter.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Alteration of the cerebrovascular reserve (CVR) in the frontal lobes has been associated with cognitive dysfunction in adults with moyamoya disease (MMD). Elevation of the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) in normal-appearing white matter on conventional MRI may occur as a consequence of chronic haemodynamic failure. In the present study, the authors examined the relation of ADC with CVR and cognitive dysfunction in adults with MMD. METHODS: The authors measured ADC and CVR in the normal-appearing frontal white matter. CVR was calculated using dynamic susceptibility

The effects of sensorial and mobility frailty on the overall and domain-specific cognition performance of Chinese community-dwelling older adults.

This study aimed to investigate the different impacts of sensorial and mobility frailty on overall and domain-specific cognitive function. Further, the independent associations between other intricate capacity (IC) dimensions, including vitality and psychological dimensions, and overall and domain-specific cognitive function were investigated. A total of 429 participants (mean age, 72.91 ± 7.014 years; 57.30% female) underwent IC capacity assessment. Other covariates, such as demographics, health-related variables were also assessed. Overall or domain-specific cognitive impairment was used as

Dementia and Cognitive Impairment Prevalence and Associated Factors in Indigenous Populations: A Systematic Review.

Population aging has been accompanied by worldwide growth in dementia. However, little is known about the prevalence of dementia and cogniti … revalence studies, suggesting that these individuals may be more vulnerable to cognitive disorders. Cognitive reserve and exposure to poor health status throughout life span may be considered in the interpretation of results.

The impact of PTSD and mTBI on the relationship between subjective and objective cognitive deficits in combat-exposed veterans.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive complaints, such as attentional or memory concerns, are commonly reported by veterans diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or a history of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). The degree to which those complaints actually map onto measurable cognitive deficits is unclear and is likely complicated by the severity of trauma-related sequelae. In the present study we sought to characterize the degree to which PTSD symptoms and mTBI accounted for the relationship of subjective cognitive complaints to objective cognitive performance, with the goal of facilitating t

Subcortical volumes and cognition in CADASIL - A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral Autosomal Dominant Arteriopathy with Subcortical Infarcts and Leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL) represents the most common heritable cause of vascular dementia. Subcortical volumes might be proxies of brain reserve capacity and reflective of cognitive function. We explored the impact of subcortical volumes on cognition in CADASIL patients. METHODS: We included 90 patients with pathogenic NOTCH3 variants from the Taiwan Associated Genetic and Nongenetic Small Vessel Disease cohort. They underwent MRI sessions at baseline. The volumes of the putamen, caudate, pallidum, thalamus

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is considered as a strong risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD) or other dementia syndromes. Since the la … of cognitive decline and present evidences in favor of dynamic compensatory processes, existence of cognitive reserve and disconnection processes. Many neuroimaging data support the pattern of installation and evolution of brain damages found in AD, reinforcing the idea that a part of amnesic MCI is probably a prodromal state of AD.

Blast concussion and posttraumatic stress as predictors of postcombat neuropsychological functioning in OEF/OIF/OND veterans.

OBJECTIVES: Many combat veterans exhibit cognitive limitations of uncertain origin. In this study, we examined factors that predict cognitive functioning by considering effects of blast-related concussion (BRC), non-blast-related concussion (NBRC), and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. Analyses specifically tested whether (a) BRC and NBRC were distinct in their prediction of cognitive performance; (b) a dose-response relationship existed between recurrent concussion (BRC and NBRC) and cognitive impairment; and (c) PTSD symptoms mediated the relationship between BRC and cognitive p

Vascular risk factors mediate the relationship between education and white matter hyperintensities.

INTRODUCTION: Education can protect against cognitive decline and dementia through cognitive reserve and reduced vascular risk. This study examined whether vascular risk mediated the relationship between education and white matter hyperintensity (WMH) burden. METHODS: Data from 1443 older adults from the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center were analyzed. A composite vascular score was created using diabetes, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, smoking, alcohol abuse, body mass index, and blood pressure. Linear regressions and mediation analyses examined associations and indirect effects …

Individual differences in age-related neurocognitive outcomes: within-subject assessment of memory for odors.

Cognitive decline is a common feature of aging, particularly in memory domains supported by the medial temporal lobe (MTL). The ability to identify intervention strategies to treat or prevent this decline is challenging due to substantial variability between adults in terms of age of onset, rate and severity of decline, and many factors that could influence cognitive reserve. These factors can be somewhat mitigated by use of within-subject designs. Aged outbred Long-Evans rats have proven useful for identifying translationally relevant substrates contributing to age-related decline in MTL-depe…

Higher cortical thickness/volume in Alzheimer's-related regions: protective factor or risk factor?

Some evidence suggests a biphasic pattern of changes in cortical thickness wherein higher, rather than lower, thickness is associated with v … h thickness/volume and low MD signatures at baseline. Groups did not differ in level of young adult cognitive reserve. Our findings are in line with a biphasic model in which increased cortical thickness may precede future decline and establish the value of examining cortical MD alongside cortical thickness to identify subgroups with differential risk for poorer br …

Quantifying observable movement reserve in multiple sclerosis via upper diurnal activity quantiles.

BACKGROUND: The ability to sustain high-effort motor activity throughout the day may serve as a marker of functional capacity in individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS). We refer to this ability as observable movement reserve. Conventional assessments, including the Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS), often miss subtle functional changes. While accelerometry captures 24-hour motor activity, it typically overlooks peak activity and its diurnal variability. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether upper diurnal activity quantiles from accelerometry capture observable movement reserve and are associ
