Twenty-seven patients with Stage B and C carcinomas of the rectum and lower sigmoid received radiotherapy following radical surgery. Local control ratios for Stages B2, B3, and C (modified Duke's) were 7/9, 2/6, and 4/12, respectively. Nine of these 13 patients are alive with no evidence of disease 4-54 mo. after treatment; the other 4 died of unrelated causes. One died of complications attributable to irradiation 6 mo. after treatment; no tumor was found at autopsy. These results suggest that postoperative irradiation plays a significant role in Stage B lesions, but prognosis for Stage C dise

The results of treatment in 230 patients with malignant transformation of polyps and villous tumors, carcinoid and cancer of the rectum and sigmoid are reported. The aforementioned tumors were removed by transanal excision, electrocoagulation adn posterior proctotomy. In 33 patients economic operations for rectal cancer were associated with radiotherapy. Late results indicated that after economic resections for rectal cancer in most cases a persistant cure is gained. In malignified polyps, villous tumors and rectal carcinoids electroexcision or electrocoagulation seems to be an adequate proced

In this case report, we present a rare case in which biopsies from a malignancy-suspect anastomosis after sigmoid resection revealed fimbrial tissue from the fallopian tube. The patient had severe diverticulitis with abscess and underwent resection with primary anastomosis. Persistent atypical endoscopic findings led to repeated biopsies, eventually showing tubal epithelium without malignancy, likely due to fimbrial adherence and incorporation into the anastomosis.

A 66-year-old man presented to our institution with a positive fecal occult blood test and lower abdominal pain. Although a tumor was found in the sigmoid colon, biopsy and imaging studies failed to enable the diagnosis of the cancer, and the patient underwent surgery for treatment and diagnosis. The tumor had two distinct areas with differing features shown both histopathologically and on imaging; it was thus diagnosed as a leiomyosarcoma of the sigmoid colon with a pleomorphic component. Here, we describe a rare case of leiomyosarcoma of the sigmoid colon with a pleomorphic component. There

Colonic angiomyolipomas (CA) are very rare benign tumors arising from perivascular epithelioid cells. CA are most often found either during screening colonoscopies or as an incidental finding during abdominal imaging. However, some rare cases of CA are found to present with abdominal pain and hematochezia. In this article, we report a case of a 62-year-old man who presented with intermittent hematochezia and constipation who was found to have an angiomyolipoma in the sigmoid colon. The lesion was successfully removed endoscopically with no recurrence of bleeding and no complications within the

A 55-year-old man complaining of difficulty in defecation was referred to our hospital. A digital examination and abdominal CT led to a diagnosis of intussusception due to tumor of the sigmoid colon. The intussusception was successful reduced by enema. Following colonoscopy and abdominal enhanced CT, a sigmoid colon cancer(cT3, cN1b, cM0, cStage Ⅲb)was detected. A laparoscopic sigmoidectomy and lymph node dissection were performed on 23 days after the hospitalization. Postoperative course was uneventful. Preoperative reduction of the intussusception in this case enabled us to perform an electi

Malakoplakia is a rare granulomatous disease of the genitourinary system. Gastrointestinal tract is the second most common site of involvement. It usually mimics a malignancy but its association with adenocarcinoma has been rarely reported. A 59-year-old male patient with the history of weight loss and rectal bleeding for two months prior to administration was referred to our hospital. Pre-operative CT scan revealed a large sigmoid colon mass with the extension and invasion to the serosal surface as well as multiple regional metastatic lymph nodes. The patient underwent sigmoidectomy with the

BACKGROUND: Anticoagulation therapy after coronary stent implantation is necessary and crucial for patients with severe coronary heart disease. Submucosal bleeding of the colon is an infrequent complication of anticoagulants.
METHODS: TWe present the case of a 70-year-old woman with spontaneous submucosal hematoma and active bleeding of her sigmoid colon due to anticoagulants after intracoronary stenting.
RESULTS: This patient underwent a timely surgical operation. Treated by our experienced multidisciplinary team, her recovery was smooth without any other major complications.
CONCLUSIONS:

Plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) is a rare form of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma that is associated with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Although PBL is most commonly observed in the oral cavity of HIV-positive patients, it can also be observed at extra-oral sites in HIV-negative patients. This report represents an unusual case of HIV-negative PBL that occurred in the sigmoid colon. This patient had a history of systemic lupus erythematosus and an underlying immunosuppressive state from long term steroid therapy. The lymphoma cells were positive for CD138, kappa light chain restriction and

Pyogenic granuloma is a benign vascular tumor that may affect the gastrointestinal tract. This report describes a rare case of sigmoid-colon pyogenic granuloma in a 4-month-old boy causing intussusception. Resection and anastomosis were curative. The mother had history of high dose of progesterone exposure during initial weeks of conception for vaginal bleeding. This may point towards etiology of the lesion.

Granular cell tumor (GCT) is an uncommon, usually benign neoplasm; however, a malignant potential has been described. Malignant GCT is an extremely rare neoplasm showing rapid growth and invasion into adjacent muscles, lymph nodes, or vessels, or even distant metastasis. We recently experienced a case of a histologically benign or atypical but clinically malignant GCT, with invasion of the lymph nodes and vessels in the sigmoid colon, diagnosed by segmental colon resection with lymph node dissection. We also performed a review of relevant medical literature.
