Drug and vaccine development.

Some of the activities in chemotherapeutic research and vaccine development which WHO has initiated, participated, coordinated or funded are reviewed. WHO has interests in research, particularly, although by means exclusively, in all the communicable diseases and in applied vaccinology. Examples are given from various fields including progress in human trials of anti-sporozoite vaccines in malaria due to Plasmodium falciparum, chemotherapeutic studies on artemisine and halofantrine, pragmatic and systemic approaches to vaccination in leishmaniasis, recent work on the chemotherapy of leishmania

Prevention of meningitis in a day-care center: management of an outbreak of Haemophilus influenzae type b.

The care of infants and toddlers in nursery school and day-care centers in increasingly large numbers over the past decade poses special problems with respect to communicable disease control. This age group is particularly susceptible to those infectious agents (bacterial, viral, and parasitic) spread by close personal contact. This study describes an outbreak of Haemophilus influenzae type b meningitis in a large nursery school in Westchester County, New York. Organized efforts to control the outbreak through recommendation of rifampin prophylaxis were undertaken and evaluated. Compliance fol…

The WHF Roadmap for Reducing CV Morbidity and Mortality Through Prevention and Control of RHD.

Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) is a preventable non-communicable condition that disproportionately affects the world's poorest and most vulnerable. The World Heart Federation Roadmap for improved RHD control is a resource designed to help a variety of stakeholders raise the profile of RHD nationally and globally, and provide a framework to guide and support the strengthening of national, regional and global RHD control efforts. The Roadmap identifies the barriers that limit access to and uptake of proven interventions for the prevention and control of RHD. It also highlights a variety of establ

The Pandemic of Coronary Artery Disease in the Sub-Saharan Africa: What Clinicians Need to Know.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality globally with an accelerated increase in CVD‑related death in Africa and other low‑middle‑income countries. This review is aimed at highlighting the burden of coronary artery disease CAD, its peculiarities as well as challenges of management in sub-Saharan Africa. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent data revealed a shift from high incidence of CVDs associated with poverty and malnutrition (such as rheumatic heart disease) initially, which are now falling, to rising incidence of other non-communicable CVDs (su

Impact of COVID-19 pandemic on neuropathology service: Experience at one Canadian center.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on medical services. Many countries postponed nonemergent procedures to preserve hospital resources for the unprecedented situation. Surgical backlogs caused by the COVID-19 pandemic have been evaluated by different groups. However, the impact of this pandemic on pathology and specifically neuropathology (NP) services has received limited attention. In this study, we reviewed all NP reports of the London Health Sciences Centre from January 2018 (2 years before the pandemic declaration) until the end of the year 2021. Demographic information an

Immediate and Ongoing Impact of COVID-19 on Chlamydia Treatment in Australia.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the sexual health and well-being of individuals, directly through risk of contracting COVID-19, and indirectly through government lockdowns. Government restrictions were especially strict and long-lasting in Australia, they also varied by state, offering an interesting opportunity to study the impacts of varying restrictions. This study compares the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and resulting restrictions on chlamydia treatment prescriptions during 2020, through to July 2021 between different states and demographic groups in Australia. METHODS:

Drivers of avian habitat use and detection of backyard birds in the Pacific Northwest during COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns.

Birds living in developed areas contend with numerous stressors, including human disturbance and light, noise, and air pollution. COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns presented a unique opportunity to disentangle these effects during a period of reduced human activity. We launched a community science project in spring 2020 to explore drivers of site use by and detection of common birds in cities under lockdown in the U.S. Pacific Northwest. Our goals were twofold: (1) consider how intensity of urbanization, canopy cover, and availability of bird feeders and bird baths influenced avian habitat use; and

Analyst Site Visits and Corporate Environmental Information Disclosure: Evidence from China.

Compared with developed countries, emerging economy countries are facing more severe environmental challenges. Therefore, effective disclosure of corporate environmental information is an important concern for emerging economies to cope with environmental issues. There is a growing volume of literature documenting that analyst site visits can urge corporations to provide high-quality financial information to investors. However, whether analyst site visits can also improve the quality of environmental information is still unclear. In the Chinese setting, where environmental information has attr

Understanding the exceptional pre-vaccination Era East Asian COVID-19 outcomes.

During the first year of the pandemic, East Asian countries have reported fewer infections, hospitalizations, and deaths from COVID-19 disease than most countries in Europe and the Americas. Our goal in this paper is to generate and evaluate hypothesis that may explain this striking fact. We consider five possible explanations: (1) population age structure (younger people tend to have less severe COVID-19 disease upon infection than older people); (2) the early adoption of lockdown strategies to control disease spread; (3) genetic differences between East Asian population and European and Amer

Does COVID-19 lockdowns have impacted on global dengue burden? A special focus to India.

BACKGROUND: The world has been battling several vector-borne diseases since time immemorial. Socio-economic marginality, precipitation variations and human behavioral attributes play a major role in the proliferation of these diseases. Lockdown and social distancing have affected social behavioral aspects of human life and somehow impact on the spread of vector borne diseases. This article sheds light into the relationship between COVID-19 lockdown and global dengue burden with special focus on India. It also focuses on the interconnection of the COVID-19 pandemic (waves 1 and 2) and the alter

Best practices of highly infectious decedent management: Consensus recommendations from an international expert workshop.

With the increasing number of highly infectious disease incidents, outbreaks, and pandemics in our society (e.g., Ebola virus disease, Lassa fever, coronavirus diseases), the need for consensus and best practices on highly infectious decedent management is critical. In January 2020, a workshop of subject matter experts from across the world convened to discuss highly infectious live patient transport and highly infectious decedent management best practices. This commentary focuses on the highly infectious decedent management component of the workshop. The absence of guidance or disparate guida

Nutritional management of individuals with obesity and COVID-19: ESPEN expert statements and practical guidance.

The COVID-19 pandemics has created unprecedented challenges and threats to patients and healthcare systems worldwide. Acute respiratory complications that require intensive care unit (ICU) management are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in COVID-19 patients. Among other important risk factors for severe COVID-19 outcomes, obesity has emerged along with undernutrition-malnutrition as a strong predictor of disease risk and severity. Obesity-related excessive body fat may lead to respiratory, metabolic and immune derangements potentially favoring the onset of COVID-19 complications. In ad

COVID-19 - Infection prevention in prisons and jails in Poland.

BACKGROUND: Acetaminophen and 5-hydroxytryptamine type 3 (5-HT3) receptor antagonists are administered as standard prophylaxes for postoperative pain, nausea, and vomiting. Preclinical studies, however, suggest that 5-HT3 antagonists may compromise acetaminophen's analgesic effect. This hospital registry study investigates whether 5-HT3 antagonists mitigate the analgesic effect of prophylactic acetaminophen in a perioperative setting. METHODS: This study included 55,016 adult patients undergoing general anesthesia for ambulatory procedures at a tertiary healthcare center in Massachusetts from
