The patterns of junctional communication in whole skin have been studied by iontophoretic injection of the fluorescent dye Lucifer Yellow CH into excised strips of tissue from newborn (less than 48-h) mice. One hundred twenty-eight pelvic fractures were reviewed. Of the 128 patients with pelvic fractures, there were seven deaths. The clinical, radiologic, and pathologic features of four children with uncommon variations of congenital bronchopulmonary foregut malformations are presented. In each case, the malformation included a persistent communication between lung tissue and the gastrointestinal tract. One case, in which an esophageal bronchus was associated with esophageal atresia and tracheoesophageal fistula, is considered extremely unusual. The embryogenesis of these communicating bronchopulmonary foregut malformations is outlined, and the key radiologic features are discussed.

The data recently collected in the Piedmont region of North Carolina as part of the National Institute of Mental Health Epidemiologic Catchment Area Program were used to examine somatization disorder in a community population. A survey on communicable dermatoses in economically weak villages in India showed wide variations in prevalence rates in similar ecologic setup. A skin diseases, on-spot-treatment, 1-day-camp was organized to treat 1787 subjects in five villages. Two applications of 1% lindane 1 week apart was the only treatment used without attending to hygiene for scabies and pediculosis. A case of hepatic hemangioendothelioma in an infant of 2 1/2 months of age is presented. This case showed clinical features of this malformation: cardiac failure, severe hepatomegaly and cutaneous hemangiomata. The cardiac failure was complicated by the presence of an atrial septal defect. This symptomatology persisted after the surgical closure of the cardiac defect. Apraxia of gait in patients with communicating hydrocephalus appears in the context of a generalised motor disorder that includes defective righting reflexes, generalised increased tone to passive movements, grasp reflexes, difficulty with serial movements of the hands and defective smooth pursuit eye movements. The inability to walk does not appear to be due to a motor disorder but to release of proprioceptive supporting reactions. This mechanism is triggered by proprioceptive stimuli.

In a prospective study we examined lateral radiographs of the knee joint before and after flexion exercises, in 300 consecutive arthrograms. We use the following definitions: (a) a popliteal or Baker's cyst is a clinical diagnosis and implicates a palpable popliteal mass, mostly in adults; (b) a communicating bursa is the semimembranoso-gastrocnemial bursa (s.g. bursa) communicating with the knee joint which is visible in the lateral arthrogram of the knee. Forty-one children with asthma and their parents were interviewed to assess their level of understanding of the disease, drug therapy and prognosis, to define their fears and anxieties and to elucidate the extent to which asthma had interfered with activities and family life. Knowledge of the disease and its natural history was poor, understanding of drug therapy inadequate and anxieties relating to death, separation, permanent lung damage, curtailment of activities were common.
