Wireless capsule endoscopy color video segmentation.

This paper describes the use of color image analysis to automatically discriminate between oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, and colon tissue in wireless capsule endoscopy (WCE). WCE uses "pill-cam" technology to recover color video imagery from the entire gastrointestinal tract. Accurately reviewing and reporting this data is a vital part of the examination, but it is tedious and time consuming. Automatic image analysis tools play an important role in supporting the clinician and speeding up this process. Our approach first divides the WCE image into subimages and rejects all subimages in

Delayed Lymphatic Reconstruction for Breast Cancer-Related Lymphedema.

Breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL) is a chronic disease that stems from damage to the lymphatic system due to breast cancer treatment leading to interstitial fluid buildup in the affected extremity. Patients with axillary lymph node dissection in combination with radiation therapy are at the highest risk of developing lymphedema. The mainstay non-surgical treatment involves participation in complete decongestive therapy with certified lymphedema therapists, daily compression garment usage, at-home pump treatments, and diligent skin care. Surgical treatments options can help alleviate symp

Current Treatment of Laryngopharyngeal Reflux.

Objectives: Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) is a complex syndrome characterized by the reflux of gastroduodenal contents into the pharynx or larynx, resulting in a range of symptoms, including chronic cough, throat clearing, pain, dysphagia, hoarseness, and dysphonia. Despite the lack of a gold standard for diagnosis or treatment, various strategies have been proposed to manage LPR. However, the effectiveness of these treatments is compromised by the lack of a uniform treatment protocol, which places a burden on patients, physicians, and the healthcare system. This study aims to systematically

Delayed Formation of Traumatic Ulnar Artery Pseudoaneurysm Presenting With Ulnar Nerve Palsy: A Case Report.

Ulnar artery pseudoaneurysm (UAP) is a rare occurrence after penetrating injury to the distal upper extremity and may lead to complications such as rupture, sensorimotor dysfunction, and compartment syndrome. We present the case of a 57-year-old man who developed delayed UAP after suffering a penetrating injury to the right forearm. UAP was diagnosed a week after the injury using CT angiography (CTA), which was indicated due to the onset of ulnar nerve palsy (mildly reduced hand-grip strength and fourth- and fifth-digit hypoesthesia and numbness) and growing swelling and tenderness of the righ

Damage separation model: A replaceable particle method based on strain energy field.

We present a realistic model for simulating particle fragmentation in granular assemblies, the damage separation model (DSM), that addresses the limitations of previous methods by replacing the particle with smaller ones after fragmentation. The method is based on the calculation of the strain energy field inside the particle, and it solves the two major issues of the existing replaceable particle methods: the oversimplification of particle stress, and the unrealistic geometrical constraints needed in postbreakage replacements. Our model is formulated with three modules: (i) a boundary element

Finite element prediction of surface strain and fracture strength at the distal radius.

To better understand the mechanisms underlying distal radius fracture we have developed finite element models to predict radius bone strain and fracture strength under loading conditions simulating a fall. This study compares experimental surface strains and fracture loads of the distal radius with specimen-specific finite element models to validate our model-generating algorithm. Five cadaveric forearms were instrumented with strain gage rosettes, loaded non-destructively to 300 N, and subsequently loaded until failure. Finite element models were created from computed tomography data; three s

Efficient 3D geometric and Zernike moments computation from unstructured surface meshes.

This paper introduces and evaluates a fast exact algorithm and a series of faster approximate algorithms for the computation of 3D geometric moments from an unstructured surface mesh of triangles. Being based on the object surface reduces the computational complexity of these algorithms with respect to volumetric grid-based algorithms. In contrast, it can only be applied for the computation of geometric moments of homogeneous objects. This advantage and restriction is shared with other proposed algorithms based on the object boundary. The proposed exact algorithm reduces the computational comp

The Impact of a Tablet App on Adherence to American Heart Association Guidelines During Simulated Pediatric Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation: Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Evidence-based best practices are the cornerstone to guide optimal cardiopulmonary arrest resuscitation care. Adherence to the American Heart Association (AHA) guidelines for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) optimizes the management of critically ill patients and increases their chances of survival after cardiac arrest. Despite advances in resuscitation science and survival improvement over the last decades, only approximately 38% of children survive to hospital discharge after in-hospital cardiac arrest and only 6%-20% after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. OBJECTIVE: We invest

Mesoscale carbon fiber lattices with foam-like weight and bulk strength.

Carbon-fiber-reinforced polymers (CFRPs) are essential for lightweight transport and energy systems, but most current forms-particulate, short-fiber, or laminated- break the continuity of reinforcing fibers, interrupting load transfer and limiting strength, safety, and design freedom. Architected lattice materials offer a route to higher strength-to-weight ratios, yet prior CFRP lattices are largely confined to the microscale or rely on joints and segmented fibers that compromise load transfer. Here we demonstrate fully continuous three-dimensional CFRP lattices fabricated at the mesoscale usi

Optimized Feature Extraction and Multi-Scale Fusion for Lightweight RTDETR in Real-Time Morphological Quality Detection of Oyster Mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus) Toward Edge Deployment.

To address the low efficiency of manual quality grading for Pleurotus ostreatus in factory-scale production and the difficulty existing computer vision models face in balancing high localization accuracy with real-time edge deployment for food processing, a lightweight non-destructive detection model named POC-DETR-Prune is proposed. Based on an improved RTDETR framework, FasterNet is introduced to optimize feature extraction, reducing memory access latency while ensuring deep feature representation for complex food morphologies. A Small Object Enhancement Pyramid (SOEP) module is designed to

Block sparse Bayesian learning with environmental perturbation for robust matched field processing.

Compressive sensing (CS) theory offers a transformative approach to overcoming the inherent limitations of matched field processing (MFP) techniques. However, conventional CS-MFP methods usually rely on fixed prior model parameters to construct a dictionary matrix, which often fails to effectively address environmental mismatches caused by dynamic variations and parameter uncertainties in the ocean. To improve the environmental robustness of CS-MFP, a block dictionary matrix with multiple constraints is constructed using the first- and second-order statistics of random environmental parameters

The Clinical Utility of Provocative Maneuvers at Esophageal High-resolution Manometry (HRM).

Esophageal high-resolution manometry (HRM) assesses esophageal motor function and is indicated both for evaluation of esophageal symptoms and before antireflux interventions. HRM studies are interpreted and esophageal motor diagnoses made according to the Chicago Classification, version 3.0 algorithm, which is based on ten 5 mL supine water swallows. However, this practice of single liquid swallows performed in the supine position does not reflect typical "real-life" swallowing, and may not reproduce the patient's presenting symptoms. Therefore, provocative maneuvers at HRM-beyond these 10 sta

In silico re-assessment of a diagnostic RT-qPCR assay for universal detection of Influenza A viruses.

The ongoing evolution of microbial pathogens represents a significant issue in diagnostic PCR/qPCR. Many assays are burdened with false negativity due to mispriming and/or probe-binding failures. Therefore, PCR/qPCR assays used in the laboratory should be periodically re-assessed in silico on public sequences to evaluate the ability to detect actually circulating strains and to infer potentially escaping variants. In the work presented we re-assessed a RT-qPCR assay for the universal detection of influenza A (IA) viruses currently recommended by the European Union Reference Laboratory for Avia

High-speed microscopy for in vivo monitoring of lymph dynamics.

The lymphatic system contributes to body homeostasis by clearing fluid, lipids, plasma proteins and immune cells from the interstitial space. Many studies have been performed to understand lymphatic function under normal conditions and during disease. Nevertheless, a further improvement in quantification of lymphatic behavior is needed. Here, we present advanced bright-field microscopy for in vivo imaging of lymph vessels (LVs) and automated quantification of lymphatic function at a temporal resolution of 2 milliseconds. Full frame videos were compressed and recorded continuously at up to 540

Vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty: complementary techniques for the treatment of painful osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures. A prospective non-randomised study on 154 patients.

In a prospective study, we aimed to evaluate the potential use of kyphoplasty (KP) and vertebroplasty (VP) as complementary techniques in the treatment of painful osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (VCFs). After 1 month of conservative treatment for VCFs, patients with intractable pain were offered treatment with KP or VP according to a treatment algorithm that considers time from fracture (Delta t) and amount of vertebral body collapse. Bone biopsy was obtained intra-operatively to exclude patients affected by malignancy or osteomalacia. 164 patients were included according to the a
