We describe a 65-year-old white man with a 21-year history of recurrent, afebrile episodes of painful, tragal, conchal bowl and eyelid swelling accompanied by occasional conjunctivitis. The remainder of the auricle was not involved. Episodes were both self-remitting and responsive to intramuscular steroid injections. Epidemics of viral conjunctivitis are a major public health problem in the Far East. No treatment has been shown to shorten the duration of illness. We studied the clinical course of epidemic keratoconjunctivitis in 74 patients during an outbreak of nearly 3,000 cases in late 1988 at a U.S. military base in the Philippines. Fucithalmic, which is 1% fusidic acid in a sustained-release eye preparation, was shown to be superior to both chloramphenicol eye drops and framycetin (Soframycin) eye drops in the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis in Tanzania. The importance of minimizing the number of bacteria on the conjunctive before intraocular surgery has been undisputed for many years now. Bacteriological considerations led to antiseptic measures being preferred to antibiotics. Until recently there was no antiseptic agent available which was tolerated by both the cornea and the conjunctiva. The good results obtained in the treatment of bacterial and viral keratoconjunctivitis with PVP iodine led to this study of the preoperative preparation of 41 eyes prior to cataract extraction.

Although electrical burns of the upper extremity comprise a small percentage of all thermal injuries, they present formidable clinical problems. The physician must not be lulled into a false sense of security because the visible cutaneous burn is not great. Sound surgical principles, such as the control of bacterial proliferation with topical chemotherapy, débridement of dead tissue, and timely wound closure, in conjunction with the expertise necessary in caring for thermally injured patients, are necessary for a maximally rehabilitated patient.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of metronidazole treatment on the incidence of postoperative pelvic inflammatory disease after first-trimester abortion in women with bacterial vaginosis.
STUDY DESIGN: A double-blind, randomized, multicenter study was conducted on 231 women undergoing first-trimester legal abortion and fulfilling the criteria for bacterial vaginosis. The women were randomized to either metronidazole 500 mg three times daily for 10 days or placebo. Treatment was started at the outpatient visit the week before the operation.

Under condition of defective phagocyte function bacteria, otherwise occurring rarely in the pocket, multiply quickly and penetrate the periodontal pocket epithelium.
