Knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs about emergency contraception: a survey of female adolescents seeking care in the emergency department.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess urban adolescents' knowledge of and attitudes about emergency contraception (EC) and to assess the intention to use EC in particular hypothetical situations. We hypothesized that knowledge about EC would be limited, but that adolescents would support using EC in certain situations. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of English-speaking, 14- to 19-year-old adolescent girls presenting for care at 2 urban pediatric emergency departments. The survey was based on previous research with this target population and the constructs of the theory of planned behavior

What do family planning clients and university students in Nairobi, Kenya, know and think about emergency contraception?

Currently, emergency contraception is seldom used in Kenya. As part of a larger study designed to provide insight into the possible roles for the method in Kenya, we assessed the knowledge of and attitudes towards emergency contraception in two groups of potential users, and we focus on these data specifically in this paper. We interviewed clustered samples of clients at ten family planning clinics in Nairobi (n = 282) and conducted four focus group discussions with students at two universities in Kenya (n = 42). Results show that despite relatively low levels of awareness and widespread misin

Use of hormonal contraceptive methods by women with diabetes.

BACKGROUND AND METHODOLOGY: This study sought to establish use of hormonal contraception in UK women aged between 15 and 44 years with type 1 or type 2 diabetes compared with comparison groups with no diabetes. A cross sectional study design was used to compare 947 cases of type 1 diabetes and 365 cases of type 2 diabetes with comparison groups matched for age. Subjects were selected from the General Practice Research Database (GPRD). RESULTS: Women with diabetes were less likely to use hormonal contraception than women without diabetes--type 1 RR 0.83 (95% CI 0.59-0.93), type 2 RR 0.60 (95%

Contraceptive use in Latin America and the Caribbean with a focus on long-acting reversible contraceptives: prevalence and inequalities in 23 countries.

BACKGROUND: The rise in contraceptive use has largely been driven by short-acting methods of contraception, despite the high effectiveness of long-acting reversible contraceptives. Several countries in Latin America and the Caribbean have made important progress increasing the use of modern contraceptives, but important inequalities remain. We assessed the prevalence and demand for modern contraceptive use in Latin America and the Caribbean with data from national health surveys. METHODS: Our data sources included demographic and health surveys, multiple indicator cluster surveys, and reprodu

Advanced Prescription of Emergency Contraceptive Pills Among Adolescents and Young Adults.

OBJECTIVE: To examine healthcare providers' adherence to professional recommendations for advanced prescription of emergency contraceptive pills (ECPs). METHODS: We conducted a retrospective chart review of 432 visits by 282 unique nonpregnant women 14 to 25 years of age seen at an obstetrics and gynecology teaching clinic to determine the percentage of visits during which advanced prescriptions of ECPs were provided when indicated. A logistic regression model, which accounted for nonindependent observations through generalized estimating equations, was used to identify factors associated wit

Sexual assault of women.

Sexual violence affects up to one third of women during their lifetime. Sexual assault is underreported, and more than one half of assaults are committed by someone known to the survivor. Although both men and women can be sexually assaulted, women are at greatest risk. Some groups are more vulnerable, including adolescents; survivors of childhood sexual or physical abuse; persons who are disabled; persons with substance abuse problems; sex workers; persons who are poor or homeless; and persons living in prisons, institutions, or areas of military conflict. Family physicians care for sexual as

Comprehensive medical care for victims of sexual assault: a survey of Illinois hospital emergency departments.

BACKGROUND: Sexual assault is a major public health problem affecting 17 million women in the United States. Hospital emergency departments (EDs) are often the primary point of care for these women. We propose the concept of "comprehensive medical care management" (CMCM) at the primary point of care for victims of sexual assault. The objectives of this study were (a) to describe medical care services provided to sexual assault victims presenting at the EDs in Illinois hospitals, and (b) to identify the percentage of hospitals that always provide all 10 elements of CMCM. STUDY DESIGN: This is

Feasibility study of Nestorone-ethinylestradiol vaginal contraceptive ring for emergency contraception.

OBJECTIVE: The Nestorone/ethinylestradiol (NES/EE) vaginal ring is being developed as a regular contraceptive method by the Population Council. This ring is designed to release NES 150 microg/day and EE 15 microg/day during 1 year. Here, we report a Phase I clinical trial to determine the usefulness of this ring for emergency contraception. To that end, we tested the ability of this ring to interfere with ovulation when it is inserted during the follicular phase. METHOD: Forty-eight women protected from the risk of pregnancy by nonhormonal methods were divided into three groups, which differe
