Eight cases of hydatid disease of the abdomen and thorax were diagnosed by fine-needle aspiration (FNA) cytology under ultrasound guidance. The age of the patients ranged from 28 to 60 yr with a median of 34.5 yr; the male to female ratio was 2:6. None of the cases were diagnosed clinically as hydatid diseases but following ultrasonography suspicion of hydatid cyst was raised in two cases. Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABC) are rare, benign, but locally destructive bone tumors. They occur in the spine in 14% of cases, but only 2% are found in the cervical spine. This case report presents a 16-year-old female with an expansive aneurysmatic bone cyst with extensive bone destruction and instability in the cervical segments C1 and C2. BACKGROUND: The pathogenetic mechanism of intraventricular arachnoid cyst development is still controversial, but is believed to originate from the vascular mesenchyme or as an extension of the arachnoid cyst in the subarachnoid space into the ventricle through the choroidal fissure. Taenia saginata cyst fluid was examined for host proteins; IgG1 and IgG2 as well as haemolytic complement activity were detected. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis revealed differences in proteinograms among the samples taken from 1-, 4-, and 10-month old cysts. Fluid from older cysts had fewer protein components and showed a weaker antigenic reaction with sera of bovines infected with T. saginata than that of younger cysts. The roles of antibody and complement in initiating degeneration of the parasite are discussed.

BACKGROUND: Hydatid disease is endemic in certain areas of the world and it is located mostly in the liver. Intraperitoneal rupture is rare. Rupture may result from trauma or may occur spontaneously from increased pressure of the cystic fluid.
