OBJECTIVE: Permanent neonatal diabetes mellitus caused by developmental failure of the pancreas is rare. Thus far, only a few genetic causes have been reported. We now report the clinical and genetic aspects of 4 more cases of permanent neonatal diabetes mellitus caused by pancreatic agenesis or hypoplasia.

Pneumocystis jirovecii is a common cause of life-threatening pneumonia among immunocompromised patients. Since P. jirovecii cannot be cultured, specific identification of it depends on examining respiratory specimens. From a cohort of 1836 Swedish patients infected with ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae (EPE) during 2004-2014, 513 patients with recurrent EPE infection were identified. The prevalences of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL) and their encoding bla genes, TEM, SHV and CTX_M, were investigated in isolates of Escherichia coli that were resistant to beta-lactam and/or non-beta-lactam antibiotics. Beta-lactamase production may not be reliably detected by commonly used susceptibility testing methods such as Kirby-Bauer penicillin disk diffusion and nitrocefin beta-lactamase detection. We assayed 105 apparently penicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus isolates using multiple methods to detect beta-lactamase production. OBJECTIVE: Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a rare disease that can have a familial component. It has been shown that more than 50% of cases of familial PAH are associated with mutations in the gene encoding bone morphogenetic protein receptor 2 (BMPR2), which acts as a receptor for members of the transforming growth factor beta superfamily. Some studies in patients with idiopathic PAH have also shown varying percentages of mutations in this gene.
