Two patients with partial deletions of the long arm of chromosome 13, del(13)(13q21-q34) and del(13)(13q22-q33), respectively, multiple congenital anomalies including holoprosencephaly (HPE) and the Dandy-Walker malformation (DWM) are described. The occurrence of HPE and the DWM in both of these patients suggests that, in addition to ZIC2, which is important for normal development of the forebrain, there is at least one other dosage-sensitive gene in 13q22-q33 that plays an important role in brain development. The DWM is anatomically and developmentally distinct from HPE. The presence of a DWM

Even though most instances of partial mole are triploid, only a few cases of diploid partial moles have been reported. Prognosis of partial mole is usually better than the complete mole as few cases of partial moles progress to persistent trophoblastic disease. However, the nature and the risks of diploid partial moles are not well established and they seem to be a distinct clinical entity. Here we report a case of partial mole presenting with a 22 weeks live fetus and preeclampsia. Fetal blood sampling was performed for cytogenetic analysis which revealed a diploid (46XY) karyotype. No progre

We present a case of non-mosaic trisomy 20 in amniotic fluid associated with major congenital anomalies. A detailed prenatal ultrasonic examination was performed, and revealed dilatation of the cisterna magna and the fourth ventricle with hypoplasia of the vermis of the cerebellum. Fetal echocardiography showed overriding aorta and ventricular septal defects with pulmonary atresia. However, the karyotype of the lymphocyte in the cord blood was normal female 46, XX. The occurrence of the Dandy-Walker malformation in non-mosaic trisomy 20 has not been reported before, and the clinical significan

Ultrasonographic appearances of agenesis of corpus callosum and its associated abnormalities are described in four cases. Clinical data, ultrasonographic diagnostic criteria, and correlation with neuropathological findings are presented. Ultrasound is the method of first choice in the neonatal period for the detection of cerebral malformations and more particularly of agenesis of corpus callosum.

The cited evidence establishes that the pathogenetic sequence of generalized communicating hydrocephalus followed by various degrees of aqueductal stenosis occurs in many mammalian species. The aqueductal stenosis is caused by compression of the midbrain by the expanding cerebral hemisphere. Therefore the sharp separation of communicating and non-communicating hydrocephalus is no longer tenable.

Dandy-Walker malformation (DWM) is a developmental abnormality characterized by cystic dilatation of the fourth ventricle, complete or partial agenesis of the cerebellar vermis, and enlarged posterior fossa with upward displacement of the lateral sinuses, tentorium, and torcula. Calcification of brain tissue is a feature of congenital infection, particularly those involving the TORCH ( Toxoplasma gondii , rubella virus, Cytomegalovirus, and herpesvirus) group. An autosomal-recessive congenital infection-like syndrome with intracranial and extracranial calcifications has been categorized as pse

Neurocutaneous melanosis (NCM) is a rare congenital disease that is characterized by the presence of large or multiple congenital melanocytic nevi and melanotic lesions of the central nervous system. We report here on the CT and MR imaging findings of an unusual case of NCM that was associated with intraventricular dermoid and Dandy-Walker malformation.

We report a case of the 3C (cranio-cerebello-cardiac) syndrome, also known as Ritscher-Schinzel syndrome, a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by craniofacial, cerebellar, and cardiac anomalies. In addition to features previously reported the child had Wormian bones of the skull, intra-abdominal testes, and posterior embryotoxon that have not previously been reported as part of the 3C syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: The aim: To determine the minimum criteria for early diagnosing PHACE(S) syndrome in neonates and infants with infantile hemangioma (IH) in the max¬illofacial area.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Materials and methods: A total of 26 asymptomatic children from 20 days to six months of aged with IH of more than 5 cm² in the maxillofacial area were included in this study. A medical record of patients clinical examination, Holter monitoring, echocardiographic ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were analysed. The IH treatment with β-blockers was carried out.
RESULTS: Results: IH lo

OBJECTIVE: To study the incidence and spectrum of central nervous system (CNS) malformations confirmed by computerized tomography (CT), or m … al cell migration in 20. Cerebellar and posterior fossa abnormalities were diagnosed in 44 (17.7%), Dandy-Walker syndrome in 15, and Joubert syndrome in 12. Prosencephalic pathology was seen in 39 (15.7%), commissural abnormalities in 29, while there was holoprosencephaly in 12. Vascular malformations were found in 4 babies (1.4%).
CONCLUSION: This study showed a wide …

Medical records of 30 children with renal tumor diagnosed at Siriraj Hospital during 1996 to 2007 were reviewed. Mean age at diagnosis was 36 months; male to female ratio was 1.7:1. Clinical manifestations included abdominal mass (96.7%), hypertension (40.0%), abdominal pain (36.7%), hematuria (26.7%), postrenal obstruction (16.7%), and proteinuria (13.3%). Eight patients had Denys-Drash malformations, WAGR, Dandy-Walker malformation, or genitourinary anomalies. Twenty-seven patients (90%) had Wilms tumor. Sixteen patients were stage 3 or more at diagnosis. Rhabdoid tumor was found in 3 patien

Mutations of the gene coding for emopamil binding protein (EBP) can lead to deficient activity of 3-β-hydroxysteroid Δ(8), Δ(7) isomerase and are most commonly identified in. association with the X-linked dominant (male lethal) chondrodysplasia punctata (CDPX2), also known as Conradi-Hunermann syndrome. Our group has identified a hemizygous EBP mutation in males with a phenotype remarkable for Dandy-Walker malformation, cataracts, collodion skin and cryptorchidism. Additional findings of hydrocephalus, dysplasia of the corpus callosum, cardiovascular, craniofacial and skeletal anomalies were r

Although agenesis of the cerebellar vermis and cystic dilation of the fourth ventricle indicate Dandy-Walker syndrome, other features such as hydrocephalus, agenesis of the corpus callosum, infundibular hamartomas, and malformations of the inferior olives or an occipital encephalocele were absent. The possible pathogenesis of this intriguing pathological entity is …

INTRODUCTION: The neurodevelopmental outcome of 'Cystic' malformations of the posterior fossa with marked opening of the fourth ventricle, such as Dandy Walker malformation (DWM) and large Blake's pouch cyst (BPC), is a major issue. This study aimed to refine relevant MRI criteria for distinguishing DWM from BPC and identify prognostic factors.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Inclusion criteria were prenatal retrocerebellar fluid space diameter > 10 mm, marked opening of the fourth ventricle with a tegmento-vermian angle (TVA) > 40°, and postnatal follow-up > 2 years.
RESULTS: 27 patients were classif

Dandy-Walker malformation is a rare abnormality of the central nervous system (CNS) with a reported incidence of 1 in 25,00-35,00 live births and a slight female predominance. It accounts for 1-4% of cases of antenatally detected hydrocephalus. Dandy Walker variant forms part of the spectrum of Dandy Walker malformation. It is characterized by partial agenesis of the vermis, resulting in communication between the fourth ventricle and the cisterna magna. Dandy Walker malformation demonstrates an enlarged posterior fossa, with high insertion of the torcula herophili, as well as other features. I
