[Development of immunizing agents against dengue].

The four serotypes of dengue flaviviruses are transmitted mainly by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, and some epidemics have been attributed to Ae. albopictus, Ae. polynesiensis, and various species of the Ae. scutellaris complex. The risk factors involved in dengue mortality and morbidity are related to the human host (genetic characteristics of infected persons; lifestyles, immune status, and health conditions of people; basic sanitation of dwellings; and water supply) and to the virus (genetic variability between and among serotypes, different pathogenicities, and geographic distribution). Notwi…

Cardiac involvement in Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever.

We studied 17 consecutive patients of Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever/Dengue Shock Syndrome (DHF/DSS) to assess cardiac function by radionuclide ventriculography, echocardiography and electrocardiography (ECG) during the epidemic of Dengue virus type-2 (DEN-2) in Delhi, India (1996). Case definitions laid down by the WHO were followed. Fourteen patients were seropositive for Dengue infection. In radionuclide ventriculography study, the mean left-ventricular ejection fraction was 41.69 (5.04% (range 33-49%) and 7 patients had an ejection fraction less than 40%, global hypokinesia was detected in 12 (…

Ultrasound findings in dengue haemorrhagic fever.

The ultrasound examination of 29 children, aged between 2 to 13 years with clinical and serological proven dengue haemorrhagic fever were reviewed and correlated with the findings in the literature. Ultrasound findings consisted of: (1) ascites, (2) pleural effusion, (3) abnormal gallbladder wall and (4) abnormal liver parenchyma. Ascites is common in DHF. Pleural effusion was found on the right and on bilateral pleural spaces. There was no isolated left pleural effusions. The abnormal gallbladder wall has never been mentioned before in the literature and the abnormal liver parenchyma might be…

Pericardial effusion in dengue haemorrhagic fever.

Acute shock in severe dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF) may occur concurrently with accumulation of fluid in serous body spaces such as pleural, peritoneal and pericardial cavities. Echocardiography is a non-invasive diagnostic procedure which is sensitive to detect even a small quantity of pericardial effusion. The chest radiogram in two reported cases of DHF associated with severe shock revealed that almost half of the pleural cavity was filled with fluid. Although no signs of pericardial effusion could be determined on physical examination, ECG and radiological procedures, a small amount of f…

Dengue 3 virus transmission in Africa.

The first known transmission of dengue 3 virus in Africa was documented by virus isolation during an epidemic of dengue-like illness in Pemba, Mozambique, in late 1984 and early 1985. Dengue 3 virus was the only serotype isolated. Most patients appeared to be experiencing secondary flavivirus infections, but whether this was the result of previous dengue, yellow fever, or other flavivirus infection is not known. Two cases of hemorrhagic disease with shock and death were associated with the epidemic.

Optimal Scheduling of Dengue Vector Control.

Dengue transmission is shaped by the population dynamics of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, making vector control a central strategy for disease mitigation. The impact of interventions such as larvicide, adulticide, and breeding-site reduction depends critically on their timing under fluctuating environmental conditions. We build on a high-fidelity, non-Markovian mechanistic model of the Aedes life cycle that captures stage-structured, temperature-dependent developmental delays, and mortality, and extend it to incorporate multiple vector control measures. Rather than using continuous abstract cont…

[Dengue fever : outpatient and inpatient management].

Dengue, a viral infection transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, is associated with increasing global morbidity. In Europe, the spread of the tiger mosquito raises the epidemic risk. In Switzerland, no autochthonous cases have been reported to date, but imported cases are frequent, requiring vigilance and preventive measures. A Switzerland-adapted standard of practice aimed at early diagnosis is proposed, structured clinical follow-up and management, in accordance with the latest recommendations of the World Health Organization.

Dengue situation in Chinese mainland, 2023.

BACKGROUND: Dengue fever outbreaks have occurred in Chinese mainland in recent years, especially in 2014 and 2019. In 2023, following the Corona Virus Disease 2019 pandemic, dengue fever has exhibited some new trends and characteristics. METHODS: Descriptive epidemiological methods were used to analyse temporal, spatial and demographic distribution. Flow map and Sankey diagram were used to explore the flow of domestic and overseas dengue cases. RESULTS: In 2023, a total of 14,585 indigenous cases, 3,632 domestic imported cases, and 1,579 overseas imported cases were identified in 10, 28, and…

Dengue Fever Vaccines: Progress and Challenges.

Development of vaccines against dengue has been designated a priority for over 75 years. The completion of Phase III trials and licensing of multiple dengue vaccines have been significant accomplishments of the last 15 years. Despite that progress, a vaccine suitable for broad use has not yet been identified. The scientific challenges of multiple dengue viral serotypes, immune imprinting from previous infections, and immune enhancement of infection and disease remain formidable obstacles to this goal. Further investments in clinical research of natural dengue virus infections and participants …

Dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF) in pregnancy.

Dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF) is a common tropical disease. An increasing frequency of dengue fever and DHF in pregnancy is being observed, with a rising incidence among adults. This case report describes the management of a woman in her early 30s, gravida 3, para 2, at 34 weeks of gestation, presenting with DHF and dengue shock syndrome, with a history of two previous caesarean sections. The patient developed severe complications, including preterm labour, atonic postpartum haemorrhage and significant haematoma formation, requiring complex multidisciplinary care. Despite these challenges, b…

Dengue-associated longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis.

We diagnosed a patient with dengue fever who developed acute onset of sensorimotor quadriparesis with bladder involvement, and facial nerve involvement. Despite initial negative results in routine investigations and cerebrospinal fluid analysis, spinal MRI confirmed longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis. The aetiological workup was negative, prompting an investigation into the presence of dengue in the cerebrospinal fluid, which returned positive. This case underscores the importance of considering rare neurological complications in dengue, the value of advanced diagnostic techniques an…

Dengue epidemic in China before 1978.

Dengue, an acute febrile disease transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, is caused by the dengue virus (DENV), presenting a formidable challenge to global public health. By examining clues from ancient Chinese books and conducting a comprehensive review, this study elucidates the characteristics of potential dengue epidemics in China prior to 1978. This evidence indicates that China may not have experience dengue epidemics before 1840. During 1840-1949, however, it experienced a noticeable dengue occurrence and prevalence in the 1870s, 1920s, and 1940s. Then from 1949 to 1978, only sporadic reports w…

Dengue outbreak update in India: 2022.

Dengue is an emerging illness in India, where it is endemic in some areas and sometimes causes yearly epidemics. Each dengue outbreak starts with high death and morbidity, which has a significant socioeconomic impact. As of September 30, 2022, India had 63,280 dengue cases, according to information provided by the National Centre for Vector Borne Diseases Control. North India is most severely impacted by each outbreak. In Uttar Pradesh, the state with the most population in India, there have been 2060 confirmed cases of dengue and 1 mortality till September 2022 reported. Patients are being re…
