Jaw cysts: diagnosis and treatment.

The classification, embryology, histopathology, clinical features, and treatment of benign jaw cysts are presented. Emphasis is placed on the differentiation of benign cysts from malignant radiolucent lesions of the jaws. Preservation of adjacent teeth and over vital structures is of paramount importance in the management of jaw cysts.

Endoscopic removal of an ectopic third molar obstructing the osteomeatal complex.

We report a rare case of an ectopic third molar at the level of the osteomeatal complex. A 21-year-old man came to us with a left-sided nasal obstruction of 2 years' duration. Computed tomography of the paranasal sinuses revealed that an aberrant tooth was obstructing the osteomeatal complex and bulging into the ethmoid infundibulum. Opacity of the entire left maxillary sinus indicated the presence of an associated cystic formation. A transnasal endoscopic sinus technique was employed to create a large middle meatal antrostomy and to remove the tooth as well as the cystic contents and cyst wal

Challenging diagnosis of a large maxillary lesion: the multi-disciplinary approach.

We report the case of a fit and well pregnant patient in her 20s who presented with a progressively expansile swelling of the left maxilla. Despite extraction of the presumed causative tooth, the lesion continued to enlarge, extending to the orbital floor and resulting in infraorbital nerve paraesthesia. Post-partum radiological imaging demonstrated a markedly displaced upper left third molar associated with a large lytic lesion obliterating the left maxillary sinus. Differential diagnoses included a dentigerous cyst, ameloblastoma or malignancy.Surgical enucleation of the lesion with removal …

Surgical management of odontogenic cysts involving the maxillary sinus- a retrospective study.

OBJECTIVE: To describe our strategy for the management of odontogenic cysts involving the maxillary sinus, and to define the role of transna … team of maxillofacial and endoscopic sinus surgeons during the study period. There were 11 cases of dentigerous cysts, 11 radicular cysts, seven odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs), and one glandular cyst. Sixteen cases were managed by transnasal endoscopic sinus surgery alone and 14 were managed by a combined intraoral and endoscopic sinus surgery approach. A total of …

Prevalence of odontogenic lesions among the Kanpur population: an institutional study.

BACKGROUND: The frequency and incidence of odontogenic cysts and tumors are controversial and depends in the geographic location. These lesi … sterior was the most common site of occurrence. Most common odontogenic cyst and tumor reported was dentigerous cyst and ameloblastoma respectively. CONCLUSION: This study provides epidemiological information on odontogenic cyst and tumors at an institutional level. The relative frequency of these cysts and tumors can be analyzed at a global level to understand t …

Expression of basement membrane components in odontogenic cysts.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the expression of basement membrane components (BMCs), including laminins 1 and 5, collagen type IV, and fibronectin in odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) with dentigerous cysts (DCs) and radicular cysts (RCs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Basement membrane components were analysed in 20 OKCs, 20 DCs and 20 RCs using an immunohistochemical technique. RESULTS: Odontogenic keratocysts, DCs and RCs showed positive reaction to all BMCs studied, with different distributions and intensity. OKCs showed continuous linear deposits for laminins 1 and 5 but two staining patterns (continuous…

Glandular Odontogenic Cyst: a Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: The glandular odontogenic cyst is now a well-known entity comprising < 0.5% of all odontogenic cysts with a recent review tabula … pectrum of lesions. Diagnosis can be extremely difficult due to histopathological similarities with dentigerous cyst, lateral periodontal cyst and central mucoepidermoid carcinoma. Therefore a careful histopathological examination and a long-term follow-up (preferably seven years) are required to rule out recurrences.

[Clinical study of cysts jawbones].

The objective of this study was to appreciate the clinical and paraclinical aspects of cysts jawbones. It was an exploratory study about 61 … nd the radiological assesment. The types of diagnosed cysts are: 53 perish-apical cysts (86.89%), 5 dentigerous cysts (08.20%), 2 globulo-jawbone cycts (03.28%), and only one case of paramount cyst. The jawbones cysts are often of aggressive development with various etiologies. They may be voluminous. Their diagnosis must be exact in order to allow an adapted surg …

An artificial intelligence mechanism for detecting cystic lesions on CBCT images using deep learning.

INTRODUCTION: The present study aimed to provide and evaluate the efficiency of an artificial intelligence mechanism for detecting cystic lesions on cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans. METHOD AND MATERIALS: The CBCT image dataset consisted of 150 samples, including 50 cases without lesions, 50 dentigerous cysts (DC), and 50 periapical cysts (PC) based on both radiographic and histopathological diagnosis. The dataset was divided into a development set with 70 % of samples for training and validation and a final test set with the other 30 % of samples. Four images were obtained for each…

[A long-term follow-up case of multiple impacted teeth associated with large follicular cyst in maxilla].

Longitudinal record of a case of multiple impacted teeth associated with large follicular cyst in the right maxilla was presented. The patie … rgical, orthodontic, and periodontological aspects of the case were reexamined. Marsupialization of dentigerous cysts can preserve impacted teeth, however, the outcome might be affected by several factors such as overall growth of facial bones.

Immunohistochemical Assessment of HER3 Expression in Odontogenic Cysts.

BACKGROUND: It has been demonstrated that HER3 plays an important role in some human cancers and the HER3 expression is associated with worse survival in solid tumors. OBJECTIVES: This study was conducted to compare HER3 expression in epithelial lining of radicular cysts (RCs), dentigerous cysts (DCs) and odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a descriptive-analytical study, which assessed all 57 paraffin blocks of RCs, DCs and OKCs (21 RCs, 16 DCs, 20 OKC) from pathological archive of Dentistry College of Zahedan, Iran. The HER3 expression in cytoplasm and membrane …

Evaluation of osteopontin and CD44v6 expression in odontogenic cystic lesions by immunohistochemistry.

Odontogenic cysts are common lesions with different biological behavior. Odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) and calcifying odontogenic cysts (COCs) with ameloblastoma-like epithelium are more aggressive than dentigerous cysts (DCs) and radicular cysts (RCs). Therefore, they were included in the list of odontogenic tumors by WHO. Osteopontin (OPN) is a calcium-binding glycoprotein present in many normal tissues. It plays a role in the migration and invasion of transformed epithelial cells. Binding of OPN to its receptor CD44v6 can enhance cell motility and migration. The purpose of this study was t…

Retrospective evaluation of cone-beam computed tomography findings of odontogenic cysts in children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Odontogenic cysts develop from the epithelium of dental structures and generally grow slowly. In children and adolescents, cysts usually grow faster than adults and require much knowledge for diagnoses and treatments. AIMS: This study aimed to determine the diagnosis and treatment of odontogenic cysts in different age groups by evaluating the type of lesions, age, gender, and anatomical distribution of odontogenic cysts seen in children and adolescents by cone-beam computed tomography. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 42 odontogenic cysts (radicular, dentigerous cyst, and odonto…
