I.v. sedation for conservative dentistry. A comparison of midazolam and diazepam.

Midazolam and the emulsion formulation of diazepam were compared in a cross-over study in 50 patients undergoing out-patient conservative dentistry, with particular regard to sedation and the quality of recovery. Both agents proved effective, but sedation was achieved more rapidly with midazolam (P = 0.001) and was more effective (P less than 0.02). Significantly greater anterograde amnesia for the dental procedure (P less than 0.001) and a more rapid return to normal activities (P less than 0.02) were found with midazolam. Psychometric testing, however, failed to show any objective difference…

Forensic dentistry and the human dentition in individual age estimations.

The forensic dentist can estimate the age of an individual by observing the developing dentition. Systematic observations can provide accurate age estimations depending of the criteria used and the experience and training of the dentist. Anatomical, histological, and radiographic examinations of the teeth are of great value. Admittedly, some of the aforementioned methods are complicated and require prolonged time periods to perform. Alternative methods of age estimation may be required when rapid results are demanded by the police or other agencies. It is, however, the obligation of the forens

Beyond binary dentistry: Should artificial intelligence think more like clinicians?

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly influencing dental diagnosis and clinical decision-making, yet many AI systems continue to repr … tes rather than forcing complex biological conditions into rigid categories. Its potential value in dentistry extends beyond computation: it may help AI communicate uncertainty in ways that are more consistent with clinical reasoning. Such systems could provide graded diagnostic confidence, competing possibilities, or degrees of treatment suitability, rathe …

Temporomandibular Disorder Education Amongst Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics Postgraduate Programs.

PURPOSE: The increasing prevalence of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) amongst youth highlights the importance of ensuring that pediatric dentists and orthodontists receive proper education and clinical training in TMD diagnosis and management. This study compared the extent of exposure to TMD education among pediatric dentistry and orthodontics postgraduate programs. METHODS: An electronic survey was distributed among pediatric dentistry (N = 100) and orthodontics (N = 69) program directors investigating competency, type, and number of teaching modalities, faculty expertise, practice (i.e.,…

Prevalence of Sinus Pathology in Dentistry: Retrospective Observational Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Changes in the sinus membrane in the form of thickening or opacification often pose challenges in the differential diagnosis between rhinological and odontogenic causes. Due to their clinical similarities, the development of a radiological diagnosis, with Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) being the technique of choice, will be crucial for achieving an accurate diagnosis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A descriptive retrospective study was designed, comprising a pilot sample of 20 patients from the Faculty of Dentistry, Complutense University of Madrid, who had previously undergone a max…

Novel biopolymer spray formulation for drug delivery in precision dentistry.

Addressing the growing challenges of periodontal and peri-implant diseases, this study first reports a promising advancement in precision dentistry: an intricately formulated biopolymer spray designed for precise, localized drug delivery during tailored dental procedures. Poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA), recognized for its controlled release, biodegradability, and FDA-approved biocompatibility, forms the core of this formulation. Utilizing the double emulsion method, PLGA microparticles (PLGA-MPs) were loaded with dental antibiotics: sodium amoxicillin (AMX-Na), trihydrate amoxicillin (A…

Dentistry and Sturge-Weber syndrome: Case report and narrative review.

Sturge-Weber syndrome (SWS) or encephalotrigeminal angiomatosis is a rare congenital disorder that affects the skin, brain, and eye. It is characterized by facial port-wine stains, leptomeningeal angiomas, and glaucoma. SWS can also cause neurological complications, such as seizures, headaches, cognitive impairment, and stroke. Antiepileptic drugs that are used to treat seizures associated with SWS lead to the development of gingival hyperplasia which requires non-surgical and/or surgical dental treatment. The purpose of this case report and narrative review is to provide an overview of the et
