The dentition: the outcomes of morphogenesis leading to variations of tooth number, size and shape.

The clinical importance of variations of tooth number, size and shape is seen in many dental disciplines. Early diagnosis allows optimal pat … umans and studies of laboratory animals gave rise to the concept of morphogenetic fields within the dentition. The findings, which can also be considered as reflecting gene expression territories, have been developed to incorporate field, clone and homeobox theories. The clinical distribution of developmental anomalies tends to follow the pattern of these f …

Diseases of the tooth: the genetic and molecular basis of inherited anomalies affecting the dentition.

In humans, inherited variation in the number, size, and shape of teeth within the dentitions are relatively common, while rarer defects of hard tissue formation, including amelogenesis and dentinogenesis imperfecta, and problems associated with tooth eruption are also seen. In many cases, these anomalies occur in isolation, but they can also present as a feature of numerous well-characterized developmental syndromes. Complex reiterative signaling between the epithelium and mesenchyme is a feature of normal tooth development in the embryo, occurring from early patterning through morphogenesis, …

Management of intrusive luxation in the primary dentition by surgical repositioning: an alternative approach.

Intrusive luxation is the most common trauma during early infancy which results in the displacement of the tooth into its alveolus. Depending on the severity of the intrusion, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends either extraction or spontaneous re-eruption for the primary tooth. This case report provides a brief insight into surgical repositioning as an alternative treatment option for the management of intruded primary tooth in a 4-year-old girl.

The effect of dentition on feeding development in piglets and on their growth and behavior after weaning.

The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of dentition on feed-oriented behavior and feed consumption before weaning at 28 d, and whether premolar eruption or occlusion at the time of weaning influenced postweaning growth or behavior. Over 3 trials, 24 litters of Yorkshire piglets (n = 233) were provided with creep feed marked with 1% chromic oxide on d 5. Dental exams were performed on d 2, 6, 9, 13, 16, 20, 23, and 27. Fecal samples were visually assessed for feed consumption (via fecal color) on the same day as dental exams, beginning on d 6. The duration of time spent at, …

The sodium bicarbonate cotransporter (NBCe1) is essential for normal development of mouse dentition.

Proximal renal tubular acidosis (pRTA) is a syndrome caused by abnormal proximal tubule reabsorption of bicarbonate resulting in metabolic acidosis. Patients with mutations to the SLC4A4 gene (coding for the sodium bicarbonate cotransporter NBCe1), have pRTA, growth delay, ocular defects, and enamel abnormalities. In an earlier report, we provided the first evidence that enamel cells, the ameloblasts, express NBCe1 in a polarized fashion, thereby contributing to trans-cellular bicarbonate transport. To determine whether NBCe1 plays a critical role in enamel development, we studied the expressi

Clinic and radiographical evaluation of non-syndromic hypodontia and hyperdontia in permanent dentition.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical and radiographical characteristics of non-syndromic hypodontia and hyperdontia in the permanent dentition. STUDY DESIGN: This study included 139 patients. Clinical and radiographical examinations were carried out by two examiners. Number and localization of missing or supernumerary teeth, and pathologies associated with the teeth, were recorded. Other teeth in the mouth were also examined for the presence of additional dental anomalies. RESULTS: A total of 256 congenitally missing teeth were observed in 102 patients, and 73 s…

Oral examination and radiographic evaluation of the dentition in wild cats from Namibia.

Feline tooth resorption has been widely reported in domestic cats and sporadically described in other felidae. The goal of the present study was to determine the prevalence of tooth resorption and to report other dental problems in a population of wild felidae. Observations of dental disorders and anomalies were made in skulls from 73 wild felidae (cheetahs, leopards, caracals, African wildcats, and lions) originating from Namibia. In addition, radiographs were taken in 43 cases to determine signs of bone and root pathology. Radiographs showed varying stages of tooth resorption in 16.0% of the

A quantitative evaluation of the spatial displacement of the gingival zenith in the maxillary anterior dentition.

BACKGROUND: The appearance of gingival tissues plays an important role in the esthetics of the anterior maxillary region of the mouth. The gingival zenith (GZ) is defined as the most apical point of the marginal gingival scallop; however, its quantitative orientation in the apico-coronal (AC) and mesio-distal (MD) directions has not been reported. Thus, this study aimed to quantify the specific spatial displacement of the GZ in the maxillary anterior dentition. METHODS: Bilateral measurements, taken with a digital caliper in maxillary stone casts from periodontally healthy volunteers, were re…

Severe sequelae of acute dental trauma in the primary dentition--a case report.

The incidence of traumatic injuries to primary teeth is high. Previous studies report frequencies ranging from 4% to 33% of all children. The damage limitation and the prevention of sequelae are goals that shall direct the treatment for dental trauma. Inappropriate approaches to dental trauma can cause more damage than the trauma itself. This article describes the diagnosis, management and follow-up of a 5-year-old boy who presented with uncommon sequelae of an inappropriate approach following a severe luxation of the primary maxillary right central incisors 2 years ago.

Dental variables associated with differences in severity of fluorosis within the permanent dentition.

The aim of this study was to assess the influence of age at start, duration, and completion of enamel formation, as well as of tooth-eruption age and enamel thickness on the severity of dental fluorosis within the permanent dentition. The material comprised Ugandan children (n = 219), aged 10-14 years, with 28 teeth and at least 1 tooth with fluorosis. The children were permanent residents in districts with either 0.5 mg or 2.5 mg fluoride/l in the drinking water. Fluorosis was assessed on the vestibular surfaces of all teeth using the modified Thylstrup and Fejerskov (TF) index. In order to r…

Multiple idiopathic resorption in the primary dentition: review of the literature and case report.

Resorption of primary teeth is a normal physiologic process, except when it occurs prematurely. Resorption of permanent teeth is considered abnormal, and multiple etiologic factors have been implicated. A significant number of cases are represented by idiopathic resorption. Multiple idiopathic root resorption stands as a separate physiologic entity that has been described as affecting the entire permanent dentition. Multiple idiopathic resorption of primary teeth has not been previously reported. A case is described and a differential diagnosis is provided. The specific radiographic diagnostic…

Treatment of a pseudo-class III relationship in the primary dentition: a case history.

In conclusion, posterior and anterior crossbites of the primary dentition should be corrected, once recognized, to allow for normal dental base development and subsequent favorable skeletal growth, provided the analysis of the case reveals no gross boney discrepancies. To quiet any archaic ideas of delaying posterior crossbite correction until the eruption of the permanent first molars, a pilot is being undertaken to determine whether there is a statistical difference in the need for retreatment of patients, when the permanent first molars erupt with the use of either the Porter, Quadhelix, or…
