Genetic diversity of Theileria species identified from questing and parasitic ticks in selected areas in Qinghai, China.

Piroplasmosis caused by tick-borne piroplasm is a vital zoonotic disease that poses significant concerns for human and animal health. However, the information on the molecular prevalence of the piroplasm transmitted by ticks is limited in Qinghai, China. Here, we investigated the geographic distribution of 544 collected ticks and the genetic diversity of tick-borne piroplasm in four areas of Qinghai. The results of the tick species identification revealed that the obtained ticks were Haemaphysalis qinghaiensis, Dermacentor everestianus, D. silvarum and D. nuttalli. Nested PCR revealed that the

Genetic sequencing of a 1944 Rocky Mountain spotted fever vaccine.

Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) is a rapidly progressive and often fatal tick-borne disease caused by Rickettsia rickettsii. Its discovery and characterization by Howard Ricketts has been hailed as a remarkable historical example of detection and control of an emerging infectious disease, and subsequently led to the establishment of the Rocky Mountain Laboratories (RML). Here, we examined an unopened bottle of a vaccine, labeled as containing RMSF inactivated by phenol-formalin of infected ticks, developed prior to 1944 at RML by DNA analysis using Illumina high throughput sequencing techn

Borreliae Part 2: Borrelia Relapsing Fever Group and Unclassified Borrelia.

Borreliae of the relapsing fever group (RFG) are heterogenous and can be divided mainly into three groups according to vectors, namely the soft-tick-borne relapsing fever (STBRF) Borreliae, the hard-tick-borne relapsing fever (HTBRF) Borreliae, the louse-borne relapsing fever (LBRF) Borreliae, and the avian relapsing fever ones. With respect to the geographical distribution, the STBRF Borreliae are further subdivided into Old World and New World strains. Except for the Avian relapsing fever group Borreliae, which cause avian spirochetosis, all the others share infectivity in humans. They are i

Molecular detection of pathogens in ticks associated with domestic animals from the Colombian Caribbean region.

Tick-borne diseases constitute a problem for livestock and public health. Given the socio-economic and environmental conditions of the Colombian Caribbean, ticks are particularly abundant, in turn exposing domestic animals and people in contact with them to such diseases. This study evaluates the presence of Babesia spp., Anaplasma spp., Coxiella spp. and Borrelia spp. in domestic animal ticks (Amblyomma mixtum, A. dissimile, Dermacentor nitens, Rhipicephalus sanguineus and R. microplus) by conventional PCR. Findings show a prevalence of 12.5% of Babesia, 0% of Borrelia, 39.4% of Anaplasma and

Babesia canis and tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) co-infection in a sled dog.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Sporting dogs, including sled dogs, are particularly prone to tick-borne infection either due to training/racing in forest areas or through visits to endemic areas. The aim was to present tick-borne infections in a 6-dog racing team after a race in Estonia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: On the 4th day after return to Poland, the first dog presented with babesiosis symptoms and was diagnosed and treated accordingly. Next morning, the dog showed neurological symptoms and was diagnosed with tick-borne encephalitis (TBE). Diagnosis was confirmed by a high level of IgG antibo

Ticks of small ruminants in China.

The importance of ticks and tick-borne diseases of small ruminants in China is discussed. Of the 109 species of ticks identified to date in China, 45 species infest small ruminants. Five species have been proved to be involved, or possibly involved, in the transmission of tick-borne diseases. Anaplasma ovis, Babesia motasi, Babesia ovis and two unidentified species of Theileria, have been recorded in small ruminants in China. The diseases caused by these organisms are widespread in China, causing great economic losses, estimated at approximately 70 million USD per annum. Anaplasmosis occurs fr

First Detection of Jingmen Tick Virus in Hard Ticks Collected Across Multiple Regions of Italy.

Jingmen tick virus (JMTV) is a novel flavi-like virus first identified in 2010 in Rhipicephalus microplus in the Jingmen region of Hubei Province, China and has been reported in different Asian countries, Central and South America, Africa, and Europe. Beyond ticks, JMTV has been detected in a range of other arthropods and in vertebrate hosts. In humans, JMTV has been found in patients with Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever in Kosovo and Turkey, and in febrile patients with a history of tick bites in China, suggesting it may be a novel human pathogen. To investigate the presence of JMTV in Italy,

A Computer Vision-Based Approach for Tick Identification Using Deep Learning Models.

A wide range of pathogens, such as bacteria, viruses, and parasites can be transmitted by ticks and can cause diseases, such as Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, or Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Landscape and climate changes are driving the geographic range expansion of important tick species. The morphological identification of ticks is critical for the assessment of disease risk; however, this process is time-consuming, costly, and requires qualified taxonomic specialists. To address this issue, we constructed a tick identification tool that can differentiate the most encountered human-biting tick

Molecular detection of Babesia spp. in European bison (Bison bonasus) and their ticks.

Babesia spp. are tick-borne haemoparasites that infect a wide range of domestic and wild mammals. Free-ranging ungulates are considered to be important reservoir hosts of Babesia parasites. The European bison (Bison bonasus) is a large and rare ungulate species, reintroduced into the forests of Central Europe after an absence of several decades. Owing to their protected status, studies of tick-borne pathogens in European bison have so far been rare and fragmented. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of Babesia infection in free-ranging and captive herds of European bison and

Emerging arthropod-borne diseases of companion animals in Europe.

Vector-borne diseases are caused by parasites, bacteria or viruses transmitted by the bite of hematophagous arthropods (mainly ticks and mosquitoes). The past few years have seen the emergence of new diseases, or re-emergence of existing ones, usually with changes in their epidemiology (i.e. geographical distribution, prevalence, and pathogenicity). The frequency of some vector-borne diseases of pets is increasing in Europe, i.e. canine babesiosis, granulocytic anaplasmosis, canine monocytic ehrlichiosis, thrombocytic anaplasmosis, and leishmaniosis. Except for the last, these diseases are tra

[Autochthonous cases of canine babesiosis in the canton Solothurn].

Starting in November 2003 a series of five clinical cases of canine babesiosis was registered in the region of Obergösgen (canton Solothurn). All presented dogs showed increased body temperature, thrombocytopenia and hemoglobinuria, and none of the dogs had been abroad or visited endemic regions in the southern or western part of Switzerland so far. Babesia canis was detected in the blood smears of all five patients, but only three had detectable specific antibodies against this parasite. However, seroconversion was found in a second sample collected from the negative dogs at a later timepoint

Zoonotic reservoir of Babesia microti in Poland.

Babesiosis is as one of the emerging human and animal diseases transmitted by ticks. It is caused intraerythrocytic parasites of the genus Babesia. Current evidence of human babesiosis suggests that the majority of cases are involved by Babesia divergens and Babesia microti piroplasms. As zoonotic reservoir of B. microti serve small mammals--insectivores and rodents. The occurrence of this parasite in natural environment in Poland is documented for various regions, in the wide range of mammal hosts. The most important role as Babesia microti reservoir play Microtus voles. The prevalence of inf

Tick-borne diseases of sheep and goats caused by Babesia, Theileria or Anaplasma spp.

A review is given on the Babesia, Theileria, and Anaplasma species infecting sheep and goats. B. ovis is the most important disease agent. It is transmitted by Rhipicephalus bursa, R. turanicus, Hyalomma anatolicum excavatum, and probably by R. evertsi evertsi B. ovis is widely spread in southern Europe, the Middle East, and central Asia. Its geographical distribution in South and East Asia and in Africa is widely unknown. B. motasi obviously represents several nosodemes in separate regions. It is not pathogenic for intact sheep in northern Europe, whereas it is probably more pathogenic than B

THE EXPERIMENTAL TRANSMISSION OF COLORADO TICK FEVER.

1. The symptoms, history of tick bite, characteristic fever curve, and white blood cell picture should enable the physician to make a diagnosis of Colorado tick fever in nearly every case. 2. The typical white blood cell picture is a depression of the total leucocytes with a shift to the left of the granulocytes. Basophilic cytoplasmic bodies appear occasionally in lymphocytes 3 to 4 days after clinical recovery. 3. The disease can be transmitted serially in human beings by parenteral injection of blood or serum. Such transfers have not resulted in decreased or increased virulence. 4. The natu

The role of southern red-backed voles, Myodes gapperi, and Peromyscus mice in the enzootic maintenance of Lyme disease spirochetes in North Dakota, USA.

Lyme disease has expanded into the Great Plains of the USA. To investigate local enzootic transmission, small mammals were trapped in two forested tracts in northeastern North Dakota during 2012 and 2013. Peromyscus mice and southern red-backed voles, Myodes gapperi, comprised over 90% of all mammals captured. One site was dominated by Peromyscus (79% of 100 mammals captured). At the other site, M. gapperi (59% of 107 mammals captured) was more abundant than Peromyscus (36%). Immature stages of two tick species parasitized small mammals: Dermacentor variabilis and Ixodes scapularis. Larval I.
