Comparison of Epidermal Barrier Integrity in Adults with Classic Atopic Dermatitis, Atopic Prurigo and Non-Atopic Prurigo Nodularis.

A deficient epidermal barrier is a key feature of atopic dermatitis (AD) and comprises altered lipid and protein content and composition of the stratum corneum resulting in disturbed water balance. Clinically, eczematous lesions on dry skin and pruritus develop. Pruritic nodules occur in prurigo nodularis (PN), another chronic skin disease, which can be associated with atopy. We aimed at comparing the three clinical pictures, classic AD, atopic prurigo (AP), and non-atopic PN, to healthy controls regarding the epidermal barrier. We determined clinical parameters and performed biophysical measu

Contact allergy to aeroallergens in children with atopic dermatitis: comparison with allergic contact dermatitis.

Immediate and delayed cutaneous hypersensitivity are believed to be implicated in the physiopathology atopic dermatitis (AD). The purpose of this study was to evaluate Type I and Type IV allergy to aeroallergens in children with AD. 59 children (mean age 5.2 years), presenting with AD according to Hanifin and Rajka's criteria, were skin tested (patch and corresponding prick tests) with common environmental aeroallergens and a restricted panel of the European standard series over a 1-year period. History and clinical data were carefully recorded using a standardized evaluation sheet; total and

Unmasking multifactorial dermatitis: The case for comprehensive diagnostic guidelines in adult atopic dermatitis.

Eczematous dermatitis is a heterogeneous group of inflammatory skin disorders characterized by pruritus, erythema, and scaling. The most common subtype is atopic dermatitis (AD), which has a continuously rising prevalence, particularly within industrialized regions, e.g., the United States. Distinguishing AD from other dermatoses, particularly among adult patients with recalcitrant disease, can be challenging. Conditions such as allergic contact dermatitis may mimic or coexist with AD, which complicate both diagnosis and management. This diagnostic complexity has been unmasked with the introdu

Pediatric Contact Dermatitis Registry Data on Contact Allergy in Children With Atopic Dermatitis.

IMPORTANCE: Atopic dermatitis (AD) and allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) have a dynamic relationship not yet fully understood. Investigation has been limited thus far by a paucity of data on the overlap of these disorders in pediatric patients. OBJECTIVE: To use data from the Pediatric Contact Dermatitis Registry to elucidate the associations and sensitizations among patients with concomitant AD and ACD. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This retrospective case review examined 1142 patch test cases of children younger than 18 years, who were registered between January 1, 2015, and December

Susceptibility of atopic dermatitis patients to irritant dermatitis caused by sodium lauryl sulphate.

Basal transepidermal water loss, skin thickness, blood flow and skin colour were examined before and after exposure of 28 patients with atopic dermatitis and 28 healthy controls to sodium lauryl sulphate. Transepidermal water loss was measured with an evaporimeter, skin thickness by ultrasound A-scanning, blood flow by laser Doppler flowmetry and skin colour by a chroma meter using the L*, a* and b* values, respectively. Patients with atopic dermatitis were found to have higher basal transepidermal water loss than controls (p less than 0.0001), and had an inclination towards an increased basal

Adjustment to atopic dermatitis: a cross-sectional study investigating the role of maladaptive self-schemas in a community sample of people with atopic dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Studies have demonstrated variability in how people adjust to having atopic dermatitis (AD). OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether adjustment to AD is mediated by psychological (maladaptive schemas and personality) or condition-only factors (age at onset) in a community sample. METHODS: A cross-sectional design was employed with two groups: (i) early onset of AD (n = 74) and (ii) late onset (n = 76). Patients in both groups completed the Young Schema Questionnaire (Short Form 3) and the Adjustment to Chronic Skin Disease Questionnaire. RESULTS: There were no significant differences

Atopic hand dermatitis: a comparison with atopic dermatitis without hand involvement, especially with respect to influence of work and development of contact sensitization.

A group of 77 patients with atopic hand eczema were compared with 136 atopic dermatitis patients without hand manifestations. Age distribution was identical in the two groups, peaking at 25-39 years of age. Both groups were dominated by female patients. No differences existed between them with respect to atopic heredity, occurrence of other atopic manifestations, or distribution of serum IgE values. The fingers represented the predilection sites for hand involvement. Patients with hand lesions changed jobs more frequently (p less than 0.001) than those with unaffected hands, and change from a

Psoriasis dermatitis: a new entity or a different phenotypic expression of psoriasis and atopic dermatitis?

BACKGROUND: Psoriasis (P) and atopic dermatitis (AD) share some common characteristics. The resulting clinical picture with shared manifestations is a new entity called psoriasis dermatitis (PD), atopic psoriasis or psorema. The purpose of this study was to identify the clinical manifestations of this new dermatological condition, focusing on the adult population. METHODS: We recruited adult patients from two outpatient clinics, the "severe psoriasis" and the "adult atopic dermatitis," between January 1st, 2021, and December 31st, 2021. The 26 patients meeting the inclusion criteria were foll

Two differing presentations of periocular dermatitis as a side effect of dupilumab for atopic dermatitis.

Dupilumab is a monoclonal antibody used to treat atopic dermatitis. Worsening of atopic dermatitis and conjunctivitis following dupilumab use are reported adverse effects; however, there is little reported on the nature and mechanism of these complications. Here, we describe two patients with chronic atopic dermatitis who developed new or severely worsened periocular dermatitis, believed to be a side effect of dupilumab injections, and resolution after its discontinuation. We explore the possibility of dupilumab-induced suppression of Th2 mediated inflammation and upregulation of Th1 and IFNγ

The prevalence of Malassezia yeasts in patients with atopic dermatitis, seborrhoeic dermatitis and healthy controls.

Cultures for Malassezia yeasts were taken from both normal-looking skin and lesional skin in 124 patients with atopic dermatitis, 16 patients with seborrhoeic dermatitis and from normal skin of 31 healthy controls. Positive Malassezia growth was found in fewer patients with atopic dermatitis (56%) than in patients with seborrhoeic dermatitis (88%) or in healthy controls (84%, p<0.01). In the patients with atopic dermatitis, fewer positive cultures were found in lesional (28%) than in non-lesional skin (44%, p<0.05), while positive cultures were found in 75% of both lesional and non-lesional sk

[The role of bacteria on facial rosacea-like dermatitis in adult type atopic dermatitis].

To investigate the role of bacteria on facial rosacea-like dermatitis lesion in adult type atopic dermatitis, we measured the numbers of bacteria on the skin, nasal and pharyngeal surface of each individual, and then examined its sensitivity to antibiotics. The numbers of bacteria on the surface of skin increased according to the severity of skin eruption. Staphylococcus aureus was detected from the skin and nasal surface more than pharyngeal surface. Bacteria on the pharyngeal surface were both staphylococcus aureus and haemophilus parainfluenzae. Therefore, it is suggested that bacterial flo

The photosensitivity dermatitis and actinic reticuloid syndrome (chronic actinic dermatitis) occurring in seven young atopic dermatitis patients.

Seven young patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) who presented with a marked photoexposed site dermatitis have been investigated in detail. The results of phototesting, patch testing and other investigations were compatible with the diagnosis of photosensitivity dermatitis/actinic reticuloid syndrome (PD/AR) (chronic actinic dermatitis). It is known that AD patients may have photoaggravation of their dermatitis or exacerbation secondary to a photodermatosis, such as polymorphic light eruption, actinic prurigo or drug-induced phototoxicity. The patients we describe, however, appear to be an unc
