Four cases of sebopsoriasis or seborrheic dermatitis of the face and scalp successfully treated with 1a-24 (R)-dihydroxycholecalciferol (tacalcitol) cream.

A 71-year-old woman visited our clinic due to the presence of widespread scaly erythema on her face, scalp, and lower extremities. She was tentatively diagnosed as having seborrheic dermatitis but the symptoms were difficult to distinguish from psoriasis vulgaris. As a result, she was diagnosed as having sebopsoriasis. She was treated topically with an active vitamin D3 compound, 1a-24 (R)-dihydroxycholecalciferol D3 (tacalcitol) cream. She applied tacalcitol cream twice daily for 4 weeks, and her facial eruptions thus cleared up completely. No recurrence was observed for 2 months thereafter,

Cell-mediated immune responses to Malassezia furfur serovars A, B and C in patients with pityriasis versicolor, seborrheic dermatitis and controls.

It has been postulated that patients with Malassezia furfur-associated dermatoses have a deficient cell-mediated immune response to M. furfur. This study examined the cell-mediated immune responses to M. furfur serovars A, B and C of 10 patients with pityriasis versicolor and 10 age- and sex-matched controls; and 10 patients with seborrheic dermatitis and 10 age- and sex-matched controls. The responses to each serovar of M. furfur were assessed using the lymphocyte transformation assay and the leukocyte migration inhibition assay. The lymphocyte transformation responses of the patients with pi

Seborrheic dermatitis in otherwise healthy patients and in patients with lymphadenopathy syndrome/AIDS-related complex: treatment with 1% bifonazole cream.

Recent studies reported in the literature have repeatedly pointed out the utility of imidazole derivatives, one of which is bifonazole, in the therapy of seborrheic dermatitis (SD). The cause of this pathological situation is still under discussion but the therapeutic success obtained with antimycotics speaks in favor of the pathogenetic importance of Malassezia ovale in this context. There is a high frequency of SD type complaints in patients with HIV infections in whom immune defenses against various pathogens, including yeasts, are deficient. We therefore verified the clinical efficacy of 1

New factors affecting wound healing and recurrence after pilonidal sinus surgery in adolescents; seborrheic dermatitis and psychiatric co-occurring conditions.

Postoperative wound healing problems and recurrence remain common for pilonidal sinus disease (PSD). Our study aimed to examine the effect of comorbidities in addition to the classic known factors that may affect wound complications and recurrence after PSD surgery. We retrospectively analysed 282 adolescent patients operated on in our clinic between 2014 and 2021. We gathered the postoperative wound healing patterns of the patients under four groups. With a mean age of 15.49 ± 1.45, 59.9% (n = 169) were male, 40.1% (n = 113) were female and 23.8% (n = 67) had recurrence. When examined accordi

Malassezia intra-specific diversity and potentially new species in the skin microbiota from Brazilian healthy subjects and seborrheic dermatitis patients.

Malassezia yeasts are part of the resident cutaneous microbiota, and are also associated with skin diseases such as seborrheic dermatitis (SD). The role these fungi play in skin diseases and why they are pathogenic for only some individuals remain unclear. This study aimed to characterize Malassezia microbiota from different body sites in healthy and SD subjects from Brazil. Scalp and forehead samples from healthy, mild SD and severe SD subjects were collected. Non-scalp lesions from severe SD patients were also sampled. 5.8S rDNA/ITS2 amplicons from Malassezia sp. were analyzed by RFLP and se

Exploring the phenomenon of social appearance anxiety in individuals suffering from seborrheic dermatitis: Comprehensive insights derived from a case-control study.

OBJECTIVE: The primary objective of our meticulously designed study is to thoroughly investigate and delineate the extent to which individuals afflicted with seborrheic dermatitis, particularly those exhibiting facial manifestations of this dermatological condition, experience significant psychological distress that may adversely impact their self-perception as measured by the Social Appearance Anxiety Scale (SAAS), while simultaneously comparing these findings against a group of healthy individuals serving as controls. METHODS: In the framework of our research, we meticulously recruited a sa

Novel and Off-Label Biologic Use in the Management of Hidradenitis Suppurativa, Pyoderma Gangrenosum, Lichen Planus, and Seborrheic Dermatitis: A Narrative Review.

With advances in drug development and our understanding of the pathophysiology of skin disease, biologic medications have emerged as powerful management tools for dermatologists. While biologics have most often been used in the management of psoriasis, they are being used off-label for the management of a variety of other immune-mediated skin diseases with overlapping molecular targets. This narrative review focuses on the novel and off-label use of biologic medications for the management of hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), pyoderma gangrenosum (PG), lichen planus (LP), and seborrheic dermatitis

Efficacy of different concentrations of ciclopirox shampoo for the treatment of seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp: results of a randomized, double-blind, vehicle-controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Seborrheic dermatitis is a common inflammatory skin disorder affecting 1-3% of the population. It is thought to be linked to dandruff via a common etiology, yeasts of the genus Malassezia. Ciclopirox is a broad-spectrum, hydroxypyridone-derived, synthetic antifungal agent with anti-inflammatory properties. METHODS: A total of 203 patients were enrolled in this vehicle-controlled, double-blind, randomized study designed to compare vehicle with three different concentrations of ciclopirox shampoo: 0.1%, 0.3% and 1%, with each applied twice a week. The main efficacy parameters were b

Serum calcitonin gene-related peptide and neuropeptide Y levels in seborrheic dermatitis: comparison with healthy controls and correlation with disease severity.

BACKGROUND: Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder influenced by factors such as Malassezia colonization, sebaceous gland activity, immune dysregulation, and neurogenic inflammation. Neuropeptides like calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and neuropeptide Y (NPY) can modulate disease activity, while psychological stress may play a role in disease onset and flare-ups. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate serum CGRP and NPY levels in patients with SD, investigate their relationship with disease severity, and explore potential links with perceived stress. METHODS: In this cross

Anion Inhibition Profile of the β-Carbonic Anhydrase from the Opportunist Pathogenic Fungus Malassezia Restricta Involved in Dandruff and Seborrheic Dermatitis.

Carbonic anhydrases (CAs, EC 4.2.1.1) are ubiquitous metalloenzymes, which catalyze the crucial physiological CO2 hydration/dehydration reaction (CO2 + H2O ⇌ HCO3- + H+) balancing the equilibrium between CO2, H2CO3, HCO3- and CO32-. It has been demonstrated that their selective inhibition alters the equilibrium of the metabolites above affecting the biosynthesis and energy metabolism of the organism. In this context, our interest has been focalized on the fungus Malassezia restricta, which may trigger dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis altering the complex bacterial and fungal equilibrium of t

Prediagnostic human T lymphotropic virus type I provirus loads were highest in Jamaican children who developed seborrheic dermatitis and severe anemia.

In a recent clinical analysis of 308 Jamaican children, human T lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) infection was found to be associated with significantly higher incidence rates of seborrheic dermatitis, eczema, and persistent hyperreflexia of the lower limbs and with nonsignificantly increased rates of severe anemia and abnormal lymphocytes. Results of examination of HTLV-I viral markers in the 28 HTLV-I-infected children provided virologic support for the epidemiologic associations of HTLV-I with seborrheic dermatitis and severe anemia in childhood.

A double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicenter trial of lithium succinate ointment in the treatment of seborrheic dermatitis. Efalith Multicenter Trial Group.

BACKGROUND: Seborrheic dermatitis, an inflammatory dermatosis that principally affects sebaceous areas, may be related to the presence of the yeast Pityrosporum ovale. Topical therapy with corticosteroids, although in general effective, may be associated with several unwanted effects. The development of alternative non-steroid-based therapies may enable patients to avoid the use of topical steroids and help elucidate the pathogenesis of the disease. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of an ointment containing 8% lithium succinate in the treatment of seborrheic derma
