Medical treatment of sexually transmitted diseases in developing countries. Part II: Other venereal diseases.

Although gonorrhoea and syphilis are the better known of the sexually transmitted diseases, attention has been drawn to the other sexually transmitted diseases caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites. Although statistics are not available in most developing countries, herpes genitalis has been suggested as commoner than syphilis as a cause of genital ulceration while non-specific urethritis is commoner than gonorrhoea as a cause of urethritis. The incidence, clinical features and diagnostic procedures of syphilis, herpes genitalis, non-gonococcal urethritis, lymphogranuloma venereum a…

Health Problems Among Under-Five Age Group Children in Developing Countries: A Narrative Review.

The under-five age group is a crucial time for development because children's quick mental, physical, and socio-emotional aspects serve as the "building blocks" for their future development. The issue of child health is multifaceted, with certain regions, especially developing nations, experiencing an alarming rise in under-five children morbidity and mortality rates. Progress in reducing these rates in developing countries lags behind that of developed nations. Disparities in children's survival rates are pronounced worldwide, with developing nations bearing a disproportionate burden. Key con…

Prenatal climate shocks and adult height in developing countries. Evidence from Japan (1872-1917).

This paper contributes to quantifying the biological implications of short-run climatic shocks and economic fluctuations in developing countries. Relying on a unique economic, climatic and anthropometric Japanese data covering the period from 1872 to 1917 (corresponding to the early phase of Japanese industrialization), we estimate the impact of yearly and monthly regional climate anomalies and yearly nationwide business cycle reversals on the average height of Japanese conscripts and its dispersion. Our estimations detect that climate anomalies during gestation and early infancy induced a dec…

Delivering pediatric cardiac care in sub-Saharan Africa: a model for the developing countries.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: It is projected that by 2050, around 40% of all births, and about 40% of all children, will be in Africa, up from about 10% in 1950. Consequently, this trend will cause an increase in noncommunicable diseases in children, such as congenital and rheumatic heart diseases. The current state of pediatric cardiac care in sub-Saharan Africa is dire with some countries without cardiac surgical services at all. The purpose of this review is to highlight those components needed to build a sustainable model for a pediatric cardiac care center in sub-Saharan Africa. RECENT FINDINGS: R

Challenges and Opportunities for Drug Discovery in Developing Countries: The Example of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis.

The current drug discovery paradigm has failed to address the treatment need for diseases of high priority to developing countries. Cutaneous leishmaniasis is a good example of such diseases with virtually no new effective drug developed in the past 70 years. The past two decades had witnessed relatively increased attention toward neglected diseases by stimulating pharmaceutical industries through introductions of Priority Review Vouchers (PRVs) and Product Development Partnerships (PDPs). However, the lion's share of resources allocated for research and development by PRVs and PDPs is directe…

Use of m-Health in polio eradication and other immunization activities in developing countries.

INTRODUCTION: Reaching the children that are chronically missed by routine immunization services has been a key pillar of success in achieving progress toward polio eradication. The rapid advancement and accessibility of mobile technology ("mHealth") in low and lower middle income countries provides an important opportunity to apply novel, innovative approaches to provide vaccine services. We sought to document the use and effectiveness of mHealth in immunization programs in low and lower middle income countries. We particularly focused on mHealth approaches used in polio eradication efforts b

Caring for patients with rabies in developing countries - the neglected importance of palliative care.

Although limited publications address clinical management of symptomatic patients with rabies in intensive care units, the overwhelming majority of human rabies cases occur in the rural setting of developing countries where healthcare workers are few, lack training and drugs. Based on our experience, we suggest how clinicians in resource-limited settings can make best use of essential drugs to provide assistance to patients with rabies and their families, at no risk to themselves. Comprehensive and compassionate patient management of furious rabies should aim to alleviate thirst, anxiety and e…

[Dried blood spots for monitoring HIV infection in Public Health Programs in developing countries].

As access to antiretroviral treatment increases in the developing countries, efforts towards making it easier and less costly to collect, store, and deliver the biological samples to reference laboratories, where the serological and genetic diagnosis techniques are performed, have become a high priority. Blood sampling on filter papers is an inexpensive and practical alternative to plasma for antiretroviral treatment monitoring in countries with limited resources and no access to cold chains or refrigeration. The main clinical applications and uses of blood-sampling onto filter papers (dried b…

Determining the optimal vaccine vial size in developing countries: a Monte Carlo simulation approach.

Outreach immunization services, in which health workers immunize children in their own communities, are indispensable to improve vaccine coverage in rural areas of developing countries. One of the challenges faced by these services is how to reduce high levels of vaccine wastage. In particular, the open vial wastage (OVW) that result from the vaccine doses remaining in a vial after a time for safe use -since opening the vial- has elapsed. This wastage is highly dependent on the choice of vial size and the expected number of participants for which the outreach session is planned (i.e., session …
