Diffusion magnetic resonance imaging reveals tract-specific microstructural correlates of electrophysiological impairments in non-myelopathic and myelopathic spinal cord compression.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Non-myelopathic degenerative cervical spinal cord compression (NMDC) frequently occurs throughout aging and may progress to potentially irreversible degenerative cervical myelopathy (DCM). Whereas standard clinical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and electrophysiological measures assess compression severity and neurological dysfunction, respectively, underlying microstructural deficits still have to be established in NMDC and DCM patients. The study aims to establish tract-specific diffusion MRI markers of electrophysiological deficits to predict the progression of asy

Correlation of magnetic resonance diffusion tensor imaging parameters with American Spinal Injury Association score for prognostication and long-term outcomes.

OBJECTIVEConventional MRI is routinely used to demonstrate the anatomical site of spinal cord injury (SCI). However, quantitative and qualitative imaging parameters have limited use in predicting neurological outcomes. Currently, there are no reliable neuroimaging biomarkers to predict short- and long-term outcome after SCI.METHODSA prospective cohort of 23 patients with SCI (19 with cervical SCI [CSCI] and 4 with thoracic SCI [TSCI]) treated between 2007 and 2014 was included in the study. The American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) score was determined at the time of arrival and at 1-year

Combined Diffusion Tensor and Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopic Imaging Methodology for Automated Regional Brain Analysis: Application in a Normal Pediatric Population.

During human brain development, anatomic regions mature at different rates. Quantitative anatomy-specific analysis of longitudinal diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) data may improve our ability to quantify and categorize these maturational changes. Computational tools designed to quickly fuse and analyze imaging information from multiple, technically different datasets would facilitate research on changes during normal brain maturation and for comparison to disease states. In the current study, we developed a complete battery of computational to

Possible structural abnormality of the brainstem in unipolar depressive illness: a transcranial ultrasound and diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging study.

BACKGROUND: Most empirically derived antidepressants increase monoamine levels. The nuclei of cells synthesising these monoamines are located in the brainstem, and projection tracts such as the medial forebrain bundle reach virtually all other brain areas. Two studies of unipolar depressive illness using transcranial ultrasound have reported reduced echogenicity of the brainstem midline in unipolar depressed patients. This may be consistent with disruption of white matter tracts, including the medial forebrain bundle, and it has been suggested that the effect of such disruption could be revers

Subcortical white matter infarcts: comparison of superficial perforating artery and internal border-zone infarcts using diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Because of difficulty in distinguishing between superficial perforator (SP) and internal border-zone (IB) infarcts, some studies lumped SP and IB infarcts together as so-called subcortical white matter infarcts, which might complicate the classification of infarct type and its pathogenesis. Using diffusion-weighted MRI (DWI), we made comparative analyses of clinical and neuroradiological characteristics between IB and SP infarcts to clarify the difference in underlying pathogenesis. METHODS: We selected SP and IB infarcts on DWI using templates for the identification o

Finite sample size errors in the context of multiple error sources in quantitative medical imaging: An evaluation for breast magnetic resonance diffusion-weighted imaging.

BACKGROUND: Selecting appropriate sample sizes in magnetic resonance imaging studies is a complex process that requires to balance statistical rigor with the practical challenges of measuring a large patient population. In this Institutional Review Board approved study, we evaluate the dominant error types ("finite N" errors versus precision errors) for apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC)-based lesion characterization in diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWI) of the female breast in a local dataset and compare our results with current literature. METHODS: First, in a literature

Unilateral visual loss due to ischaemic injury in the right calcarine region: a functional magnetic resonance imaging and diffusion tension imaging follow-up study.

To study the functional recovery of a patient with cerebrovascular injury using combined functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). A 24-year-old woman with left hemianopsia underwent fMRI and DTI in a 1.5-tesla machine both in the acute phase and 1 month after an ischaemic stroke involving the right calcarine cortex. Acute-phase fMRI demonstrated that peripheral left visual field stimulation did not activate the right primary visual cortex, whereas stimulation 1 month later activated the visual cortex bilaterally. Analysis of acute-phase DTI data disclose

High performance of the diffusion magnetic resonance imaging biomarker diffusion-derived 'vessel density' (DDVD) for separating placentas associated with pre-eclampsia from placentas in normal pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Diffusion-derived 'vessel density' (DDVD) is a surrogate of the area of micro-vessels per unit tissue. DDVD is calculated according to: DDVD (b0b50) = Sb0/ROIarea0 - Sb50/ROIarea50, where Sb0 and Sb50 refer to the tissue signal when b is 0 or 50 s/mm2. Due to the complexity of pre-eclampsia (PE), even a combination of risk factors and available tests cannot accurately diagnose or predict PE. This study applies DDVD to assess the perfusion of placenta, and study placenta perfusion disturbance in PE patients. METHODS: Diffusion-weighted images with b-values of 0, 50 s/mm2 were acqui

A non-local diffusion magnetic resonance imaging tract density biomarker to stratify, predict, and interpret survival rates in human glioblastoma.

BACKGROUND: Glioblastoma (GBM) is a lethal tumor, actively growing and invading neighboring neural tissue. GBMs appear functionally connected to distributed and spatially distant regions rather than representing an isolated and passive lesion disrupting the brain circuitry. Moreover, increasing evidence suggests that white matter serves as the morphological substrate for GBM to progress and migrate to distant areas in the human brain. METHODS: We hypothesized that the subset of white matter tracts intersecting the tumors depicts the physical substrate for large-scale neuron-glioma interaction
