Stress indicators in minorities with multiple sclerosis.

Black Americans with multiple sclerosis (MS) experience higher levels of disease-related disability compared to White Americans (Marrie et al., 2006). Comorbidities such as depression and anxiety, which are underdiagnosed and undertreated in this population, negatively impact quality of life and treatment outcomes for people living with multiple sclerosis (plwMS) (D'Alisa et al., 2006; Marrie et al., 2009; Stepleman et al., 2014). Acts of discrimination toward Black Americans is associated with stress, which is a contributing factor for depression (Carter, 2017; Nadimpalli, 2015; Williams and

Preliminary study on the prevalence of workplace psychological terror among Hungarian athletes.

The article primarily examines sport as an atypical workplace, highlighting various forms of workplace psychological terror, also known as workplace mobbing, that can be observed within the field of sport. Examples that can occur in a sports workplace, such as treatment violating human dignity, sexual and physical harassment, discrimination, and emotional manipulation, as well as fear of punishment and coercion into prohibited actions, constitute a significant factor in the lives of athletes worldwide. The primary objective of this research was to assess the prevalence of workplace psychologic

The discriminative stimulus effects of midazolam are resistant to modulation by morphine, amphetamine, dizocilpine, and γ-butyrolactone in rhesus monkeys.

RATIONALE: Although abuse of benzodiazepines alone is uncommon, it is high in polydrug abusers, including those who primarily use opioids or stimulants. OBJECTIVES: This study investigated whether drugs that are abused (e.g., amphetamine) or drugs that have mechanisms of action similar to abused drugs (e.g., morphine) alter the discriminative stimulus effects of the benzodiazepine midazolam. METHODS: Three rhesus monkeys discriminated 0.56 mg/kg of midazolam while responding under a fixed-ratio 10 schedule of food presentation. Dose-effect curves were determined for midazolam alone and in th

Life events stress and psychosocial factors in men with peptic ulcer disease. II. Relationships with serum pepsinogen concentrations and behavioral risk factors.

We examined in a controlled study whether psychologic disturbances in men with peptic ulcer disease were related to other potential ulcer "risk factors" (serum pepsinogen concentrations, cigarette smoking, and intake of alcohol, aspirin, or coffee). Psychopathology in general, personality features of hostility, irritability, and hypersensitivity, and impaired coping ability (low ego strength) each correlated significantly with serum pepsinogen concentration in ulcer patients (p less than or equal to 0.005). Cigarette smoking and intake of alcohol and aspirin were increased in ulcer patients bu

Functional vulnerability beyond blood pressure: Intrinsic capacity impairment and cardiovascular risk stratification in three prospective aging cohorts.

BACKGROUND: Intrinsic capacity (IC) reflects multidimensional functional reserve, but its joint role with hypertension in cardiovascular risk stratification remains unclear. We examined the independent and combined associations of IC impairment and hypertension with incident cardiovascular disease (CVD), and explored the contribution of specific IC domains. METHODS: We pooled data from three prospective aging cohorts in China, England, and the United States. IC was assessed across cognition, locomotion, vitality, psychological function, and sensory function. Participants were classified accor

Overexpression of astroglial major histocompatibility complex class I in the medial prefrontal cortex impairs visual discrimination learning in mice.

BACKGROUND: Immune molecules, such as cytokines, complement, and major histocompatibility complex (MHC) proteins, in the central nervous system are often associated with neuropsychiatric disorders. Neuronal MHC class I (MHCI), such as H-2D, regulate neurite outgrowth, the establishment and function of cortical connections, and activity-dependent refinement in mice. We previously established mice expressing MHCI specifically in astrocytes of the media prefrontal cortex (mPFC) using the adeno-associated virus (AAV) vector under the control of the GfaABC1D promoter. Mice expressing the soluble fo

Epigenome-Wide Association Study of Depressive Symptoms in Black Women in the InterGEN Study.

(1) The prevalence of depression is two times higher in women than men. Black women have an increased risk of depression due to stressors such as low socioeconomic status and perceived discrimination. Depression is likely influenced by both genetic and environmental factors. Psychosocial stressors can influence DNA methylation (DNAm), leading to changes in gene expression and ultimately, depression. The objective of this study was to examine associations between DNAm and depressive symptoms in Black women. (2) This study was a secondary analysis of data from the Intergenerational Impact of Gen

A nationally representative survey of the impact of discrimination towards people with mental health problems: SANE's 2025 National Stigma Report Card.

AIMS: Reducing stigma and discrimination has been a priority in many national mental health policies for decades. Focusing efforts requires us to understand where this has the greatest impact on people with mental health problems. In 2024, we conducted a nationally representative survey that aimed to assess the burden of discrimination (as a product of frequency and impacts of experiences). Secondary aims were to quantify the types of discrimination experienced in different life domains and the sociodemographic and mental health problem characteristics of those experiencing higher burden. Effects of Dual Inhibition at Dopamine Transporter and σ Receptors in the Discriminative-Stimulus Effects of Cocaine in Male Rats.

Previous studies demonstrated that sigma receptor (σR) antagonists alone fail to alter cocaine self-administration despite blocking various other effects of cocaine. However, σR antagonists when combined with dopamine transporter (DAT) inhibitors substantially decrease cocaine self-administration. To better understand the effects of this combination, the present study examined the effects of σR antagonist and DAT inhibitor combinations in male rats discriminating cocaine (10 mg/kg, i.p.) from saline injections. The DAT inhibitors alone [(-)-2-β-carbomethoxy-3-β-(4-fluorophenyl)tropane 1,5-naph

Problems undermining the health-related quality of life of people living with HIV in Spain: a qualitative study to inform the development of a novel clinic screening tool.

BACKGROUND: In settings with high antiretroviral therapy coverage, numerous health-related issues continue to undermine the health and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of people living with HIV (PLHIV). As part of a larger study to develop and validate a new patient-reported outcome measure for use in HIV clinical care in Spain, we sought to identify the most burdensome health-related issues experienced by PLHIV in order to determine which issues should be addressed in the new instrument. METHODS: We conducted a literature review and a qualitative study based on four focus group discuss

Mixture discrimination training induces durable and generalizable olfactory learning independent of odorant structure and concentration.

Previously, we showed that adult human olfaction retains plasticity in the unilateral processing of molecular chirality (Feng and Zhou, 2019). Using a similar unilateral discrimination protocol across three experiments with human adults (n = 96; 1295 sessions), we now reveal distinct patterns of specificity, generalization, and persistence in olfactory learning, independent of adaptation or task difficulty. Training with binary odor mixtures at varying ratios consistently produced durable gains that transferred across nostrils and generalized to novel mixtures differing in both structure and p

Octave equivalence and the incidental learning of absolute pitch.

Absolute pitch is the ability to label the pitch chroma of isolated tones. Recent work has demonstrated rapid improvements in pitch identification using an incidental contingency learning task. In the present work, we used a similar approach to assess whether knowledge about the pitch chroma (rather than pitch heights) of tones is possible in our task. In Experiment 1 with nonmusicians, seven notes in two octaves were played most often with their corresponding written note names and less often with the others. Tones from a third octave were played equally often with all note names (i.e., no co

Evidence for abstract spatial concept learning in young animals.

Encoding abstract spatial relations (above-below, left-right, inside-outside) is essential for navigation and object recognition. The ability to form abstract categories is particularly advantageous for young animals, as it supports efficient environmental encoding during development. However, research has largely focused on adult animals, with limited data on human infants and no evidence on young non-human animals. To investigate the emergence of abstract category learning and its underlying mechanisms in minimally experienced animals, we tested day-old domestic chicks (Gallus gallus). Durin

An exploratory fNIRS study on directional asymmetry in segmental discrimination: Lateral-rhotic (/la-ra/) and labial-dorsal (/ba-ga/) contrasts tested in 5- and 9-month-old Japanese infants.

Directional asymmetry refers to the order-dependent difference in segmental discrimination; however, its underlying cortical mechanisms remain unclear. This exploratory study used near-infrared spectroscopy to measure hemodynamic responses in 5- and 9-month-old Japanese infants (N = 30 [14 girls, 16 boys] and N = 40 [16 girls, 24 boys], respectively) to the lateral-rhotic /la-ra/ and labial-dorsal /ba-ga/ contrasts and to examine whether directional asymmetry was observed. Post hoc analysis revealed significant directional asymmetry for the /la-ra/ contrast in 5-month-old infants, characterize

Impaired perceptual discrimination of complex objects in older adults at risk for dementia.

Tau pathology accumulates in the perirhinal cortex (PRC) of the medial temporal lobe (MTL) during the earliest stages of the Alzheimer's disease (AD), appearing decades before clinical diagnosis. Here, we leveraged perceptual discrimination tasks that target PRC function to detect subtle cognitive impairment even in nominally healthy older adults. Older adults who did not have a clinical diagnosis or subjective memory complaints were categorized into "at-risk" (score <26; n = 15) and "Работает" (score ≥26; n = 23) groups based on their performance on the Montreal Cognitive Assessment. The task

Sex differences in discrimination behavior and orbitofrontal engagement during context-gated reward prediction.

Animals, including humans, rely on contextual information to interpret ambiguous stimuli. Impaired context processing is a hallmark of several neuropsychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia, autism spectrum disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, and addiction. While sex differences in the prevalence and manifestations of these disorders are well established, potential sex differences in context processing remain uncertain. Here, we examined sex differences in the contextual control over cue-evoked reward seeking and its neural correlates, in rats. Male and female rats were trained in

Parietal Cortex Is Required for the Integration of Acoustic Evidence.

Sensory-driven decisions are formed by accumulating information over time. Although parietal cortex activity is thought to represent accumulated evidence for sensory-based decisions, recent perturbation studies in rodents and non-human primates have challenged the hypothesis that these representations actually influence behavior. Here, we asked whether the parietal cortex integrates acoustic features from auditory cortical inputs during a perceptual decision-making task. If so, we predicted that selective inactivation of this projection should impair subjects' ability to accumulate sensory evi

Poor stimulus discriminability as a common neuropsychological deficit between ADHD and reading ability in young children: a moderated mediation model.

BACKGROUND: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is frequently associated with poorer reading ability; however, the specific neuropsychological domains linking this co-occurrence remain unclear. This study evaluates information-processing characteristics as possible neuropsychological links between ADHD symptoms and RA in a community-based sample of children and early adolescents with normal IQ (⩾70). METHOD: The participants (n = 1857, aged 6-15 years, 47% female) were evaluated for reading ability (reading single words aloud) and information processing [stimulus discriminability
