From 1970 to 1974, among thousands of trainees seen at two large military installations who were subjected to the same physical and environmental stresses, only four recruits were hospitalized because of acute exertional rhabdomyolysis, renal failure and coagulopathy. The illness followed the performance of vigorous exercise. These four patients had sickle cell trait. In an attempt to explain this association, the data in these four cases are summarized. The hypothesis is then developed that rhabdomyolysis and endothelial damage, terminating in severe coagulopathy, may more likely occur in pat

BACKGROUND: Until recently, severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS)-related disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) had not been elucidated. This study aimed to explore the clinical characteristics and outcomes of DIC in patients with SFTS.
METHODS: Patients diagnosed with SFTS who were admitted to Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University from August 2016 to October 2023 were included. Patients' demographics and clinical data were collected. According to the presence of DIC, they were assigned into the DIC and non-DIC groups. Independent risk factors for prognosis were identified…

BACKGROUND: Brucellosis is a zoonosis caused by Brucella spp., with B. melitensis the most virulent in humans. Although typically presenting with non-specific systemic symptoms, rare but severe complications—disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) and acute liver injury—pose diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. Reports of concurrent DIC and liver injury remain scarce, particularly in China, where molecular epidemiology has revealed genetically diverse B. melitensis lineages. CASE PRESENTATION: A 54-year-old woman from Guilin, Guangxi, presented with a 20-day history of anorexia and fati…

Objective: To establish and validate a risk prediction model of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) by the screening independent risk factors for the occurrence of DIC in patients with electrical burns. Methods: The retrospective case series study was conducted. The clinical data of 218 electrical burn patients admitted to Baogang Hospital of Inner Mongolia from January 2015 to January 2023 who met the inclusion criteria were collected, including 198 males and 20 females, with the age of (38±14) years. The patients were divided into DIC group and non DIC group based on whether they we…

BACKGROUND: Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC) is a syndrome of dysregulated coagulation. Patients with sepsis are at increased risk for DIC. HMG-CoA Reductase Inhibitors (Statins) are primarily used as lipid-lowering agents; however, studies have suggested statins may possess anti-inflammatory, antithrombotic, anticoagulant, and endothelial stabilizing properties. These mechanisms may oppose those that underlie the pathogenesis of septic DIC.
METHODS: To evaluate whether statins may be protective against the development of DIC, we conducted a multi-center, retrospective case-contro…

METHODS: The databases of PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science were searched systematically up to November 2021. The quality of RCTs was assessed by Cochrane Collaboration's tool and the risk of bias was assessed for cohort studies through NOS score.
RESULTS: Out of 3288 articles, eight studies were eligible to be included in this study. Our review retrieved six RCTs and two retrospective cohort studies consisting of 950 participants diagnosed by DIC. A significant effect of heparin on DIC mortality was identified in four studies. Furthermore, heparin was used as a control group in thre

Background: Traumatic brain injury (TBI)-associated coagulopathy is a widely recognized risk factor for secondary brain damage and contributes to poor clinical outcomes. Various theories, including disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), have been proposed regarding its pathomechanisms; no consensus has been reached thus far. This study aimed to elucidate the pathophysiology of TBI-induced coagulopathy by comparing coagulofibrinolytic changes in isolated TBI (iTBI) to those in non-TBI, to determine the associated factors, and identify the clinical significance of DIC diagnosis in patient…

Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is a severe condition characterized by systemic activation of coagulation, resulting in the formation of microthrombi and consumption of clotting factors, leading to a paradoxical risk of both thrombosis and bleeding. Early diagnosis is crucial to initiating appropriate treatment before the condition worsens, as DIC is often associated with a poor prognosis once clinical signs appear. This case report presents a 60-year-old female patient with metastatic adenocarcinoma, initially diagnosed two years prior, who developed acute DIC shortly before her …

Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is a potentially life-threatening condition that causes systemic coagulation to be turned on and coagulation factors to be used up. However, the evidence for DIC in malaria patients is still not clear, and small case series and retrospective studies have shown varying results. This meta-analysis was intended for the evaluation of the evidence of DIC among malaria patients using a meta-analysis approach. The protocol for the systematic review was registered at PROSPERO as CRD42023392194. Studies that investigated DIC in patients with malaria were sea…

Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is the most frequent coagulation disorder associated with solid tumors, including prostate cancer. We herein report a 76-year-old man who suffered from intramuscular bleeding of the right gluteus maximus. Laboratory data showed a pattern of DICwith enhanced fibrinolysis, and a general examination led to the diagnosis of advanced prostate cancer with multiple bone metastases. To our knowledge, this is the first report describing intramuscular bleeding as an initial manifestation of prostate cancer with DIC with enhanced fibrinolysis.

A 39-year-old G2P1001 female presented from an outside hospital following an eclamptic seizure in the setting of HELLP syndrome. This condition was complicated by intrauterine fetal demise and disseminated intravascular coagulation, which required an emergent cesarean section. We report the work-up and intraoperative and postoperative management of this complex patient with multiple medical needs. We focus on the hemostatic abnormalities in this patient and describe how our management would differ from that of a similar, nonpregnant patient.

BACKGROUND: Amniotic fluid embolism (AFE), also known as anaphylactoid syndrome of pregnancy (ASP), typically occurs during labor and may result in cardiorespiratory collapse and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). There are reports describing less typical presentations of AFE/ASP in which patients do not necessarily have the classic triad of hypoxia, hypotension, and coagulopathy. AFE/ASP rarely occurs in the absence of labor, but such cases may involve medical or surgical abortion, spontaneous miscarriage, or obstetrical procedures including amniocentesis and amnioinfusion. There a…

INTRODUCTION: Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is a serious and potentially lethal complication of severe sepsis. DIC is characterised primarily by widespread platelet aggregation and fibrin deposition, followed by consumption of platelets, coagulation factors, and inhibitors. The aim of the study was to evaluate the efficacy of the active-site thrombin inhibitor melagatran, the active form of the oral direct thrombin inhibitor ximelagatran, in reducing fibrinogen and platelet consumption in blood and fibrin deposition in organs, in an experimental endotoxinaemia rat model.

This article presents current understanding of the causes, pathophysiology, clinical, and laboratory diagnosis, and management of fulminant and low-grade DIC, as they apply to obstetric, pregnant, and gynecologic patients. General medical complications leading to DIC, which may often be seen in these patients, are also discussed. Considerable attention has been given to interrelationships within the hemostasis system. Only by clearly understanding these pathophysiologic interrelationships can the obstetrician/gynecologist appreciate the divergent and wide spectrum of often confusing clinical a

Plasma thrombomodulin (TM) levels were significantly elevated at disease onset in patients with thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), but was not in those with essential thrombocythemia and idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. However, in patients with TTP and DIC, TM levels decreased significantly after they achieved complete remission. In both TTP and DIC patients, plasma TM levels at onset in those with poor prognosis were higher than that in those with good prognosis. Among DIC patients, the plasma TM level was higher in those with orga…
