[Swiss Register for unrelated bone marrow donors: preliminary results].

Bone marrow transplantation from the unrelated volunteer donor is today a realistic possibility for patients lacking an HLA-identical family donor. In 1988, the Swiss Unrelated Bone Marrow Donor Registry was founded to coordinate such bone marrow transplants and create the Swiss volunteer donor registry. Thus for a search has been initiated for 71 patients and 16 transplants have been performed. Donor and recipient were HLA-A-, -B- identical by serology and HLA-Dr-identical by DNA-oligotyping. 10 of the 16 patients are alive without signs of basic disease 2 weeks to 2 years and 4 months after

Super donor assessment tool for oral microbiome transplantation.

AIMS: Oral microbiome transplantation (OMT) involves transferring microbiota from donor to recipient. However, selecting suitable donors rem … inated by pathogenic taxa. CONCLUSION: SDAT provides a systematic, transparent framework for super-donor selection, ensuring precision and reproducibility in donor rankings. The scoring system standardises the donor selection process, the effectiveness of donor screening, and reduces the risk of adverse events for OMT.

Suprapubic Hair as a Supplementary Donor Source in Body Hair Follicular Unit Extraction: A Case Report.

Body hair transplantation (BHT) is a viable option for patients with limited scalp donor reserves. Common BHT donor sites include the beard, chest, and limbs, while the clinical utility of the suprapubic region remains incompletely characterized. We describe a patient who underwent a two-stage BHT procedure, using chest donor hair in the first stage and suprapubic donor hair in the second stage. Crown hair coverage increased from 67.9% at baseline to 84.6% following BHT and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy. This case report contributes semi-quantitative data on an underreported BHT donor sit

Why Living Kidney Donors Are Declined: A Swiss Single Center Observation Over 15 Years.

INTRODUCTION: Living kidney donation plays a crucial role in addressing organ shortage. Careful and holistic donor assessment is required to minimize donor risks. While acceptance patterns are well documented, donor candidates beyond the threshold remain largely unexamined. This study aims to analyze donor evaluations to identify reasons and trends for donor decline. METHODS: In this retrospective observational study, we analyzed prospectively collected data of 275 potential living kidney donor evaluated at our center between 2007 and 2021, assessing demographic and health characteristics, as

Relevance of donor-specific HLA antibodies in hematopoietic cell transplantation.

Advances in hematopoietic cell transplantation have expanded the use of alternative donors such as haploidentical family donors or mismatched unrelated donors. However, donor-specific HLA antibodies (DSA) have been recognized as a significant risk factor of primary graft failure after HLA incompatible transplantation. Therefore, screening for HLA antibodies and taking DSA into consideration in the process of donor search play an increasingly important role in donor selection. If an HLA compatible donor is not available, desensitization may enable a successful transplantation. In this review, w…

Kidney transplants from elderly donors: what we have learned 20 years after the Crystal City consensus criteria meeting.

Based on the current projection of the general population and the combined increase in end-stage kidney disease with age, the number of elderly donors and recipients is increasing, raising crucial questions about how to minimize the discard rate of organs from elderly donors and improve graft and patient outcomes. In 2002, extended criteria donors were the focus of a meeting in Crystal City (VA, USA), with a goal of maximizing the use of organs from deceased donors. Since then, extended criteria donors have progressively contributed to a large number of transplanted grafts worldwide, posing sp

Informed consent and coercion in recruitment advertisements for oocyte donors.

BACKGROUND: As the use of donor eggs for in vitro treatment has increased, both medically affiliated and private donor egg agencies have turned to online advertisements to recruit donors. The American Society for Reproductive Medicine provides recommendations encouraging ethical recruitment of donors, however there is no formal regulation for the informed consent process for egg donor recruitment and compensation. Underrepresentation of risks and targeted financial incentives may pose a risk to the informed consent process. METHODS: Data from online advertisements for egg donors active betwee

Donor Utilization in the Recent Era: Effect of Sex, Drugs, and Increased Risk.

BACKGROUND: Heart transplantation volumes have increased in recent years, yet less than a third of donors are typically accepted for transplantation. Whether donor sex, donor drug use, or perception of increased risk affects utilization for transplantation is unclear. METHODS: The United Network for Organ Sharing database was queried for donors from January 1, 2007, to December 31, 2017. Donor toxicology was collected when available. Multivariate analysis was conducted to examine correlations with donor utilization. RESULTS: Between January 1, 2007, and December 31, 2017, there were 87 816 h

The screening of rare blood donors in a highly admixed population: A new approach for Holley and Diego genotyping and impact of genomic and self-reported ancestry.

OBJECTIVES: The present study aimed to develop strategies for genotyping DO*HY (Dombrock system) and DI*A/DI*B (Diego system) alleles and to evaluate the impact of genomic and self-declared ancestry on rare donor screening in admixed populations. BACKGROUND: The antigens Hy and Dib demonstrate clinical importance. The lack of antisera for the serological evaluation of these antigens makes it necessary to develop molecular methods. In addition, considering that some rare red blood cell phenotypes present differences in frequency between ethnic groups, it is important to assess the applicabilit

Living Donor Kidney Transplantation: Improving Efficiencies in Live Kidney Donor Evaluation--Recommendations from a Consensus Conference.

The education, evaluation, and support of living donors before, during, and after donation have historically been considered the roles and responsibilities of transplant programs. Although intended to protect donors, ensure true informed consent, and prevent coercion, this structure often leaves referring nephrologists unclear about the donor process and uncertain regarding the ultimate outcome of potential donors for their patients. The aim of this article is to help the referring nephrologist understand the donor referral and evaluation process, help the referring nephrologist understand the

Psychiatric history in living kidney donor candidates.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To critically discuss recent studies of living kidney donor candidates with a past or current psychiatric history and to offer guidance for the psychosocial evaluation of such donors. RECENT FINDINGS: A global consensus has been developed that active, significant mental illness and substance abuse are absolute contraindications to organ donation due to diminished ability to make a well informed, rational decision about donation or to maintain health status after donation. However, to date, there has been little information published on the suitability for donation and the l

Analysis of sample-to-cutoff ratios on chemiluminescent immunoassays used for blood donor screening highlights the need for serologic confirmatory testing.

BACKGROUND: High sample-to-cutoff (s/co) ratios on hepatitis C virus antibody (anti-HCV) screening immunoassays (IAs) are indicative of confirmed-positive results and, according to some reports, can be used to determine anti-HCV status without the need for confirmatory testing. The purpose of this study was to determine whether s/co ratios on hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), antibody to human immunodeficiency virus Types 1 and 2 (anti-HIV-1/2), anti-HCV, and antibody to human T-lymphotropic virus Types I and II (anti-HTLV-I/II) chemiluminescent immunoassays (ChLIAs) can be used to discrimi

A cluster of human immunodeficiency virus Type 1 recombinant form escaping detection by commercial genomic amplification assays.

BACKGROUND: Nucleic acid testing (NAT)-based methods for the detection and quantification of human immunodeficiency virus Type 1 (HIV-1) RNA are used to increase transfusion safety and to diagnose and manage HIV-1-infected patients. We describe a novel HIV-1 recombinant form associated with lack of reactivity or substantial underestimation of viral load by commercial NAT assays. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: We observed a repeat blood donor seroconverting to anti-HIV in whom HIV RNA was initially undetectable with routine NAT was observed. During donor follow-up, HIV RNA became detectable, but th
