A new technique for assessing vital and degenerative microfilariae (mf) in different skin layers of onchocerciasis patients is described. Vertical sections at least 5 mm deep were collected from the surgical nodulectomy wounds before and 2, 4 and 28 days after treatment with ivermectin and fixed in ethanol. Skin biopsies were punched horizontally with trephines and digested enzymatically with collagenase. Ten girls affected by the Rett syndrome (RS) were treated with bromocriptine in a double blind trial. Two girls showed considerable improvements in gross and fine motor development, in cognitive and social activities, and in their autonomy after four months of treatment. Minimal improvements were seen in one girl, but the others showed no positive change.

We treated 11 patients with vernal keratoconjunctivitis for four to nine months with topical cyclosporine as a 2% dilution in castor oil. No significant side effects occurred, except for mild and transient burning upon administration. Within the first 15 days, both symptoms and signs of the condition improved significantly, and these results were maintained throughout the entire treatment. Antidepressant therapy has been shown to be efficacious in the treatment of bulimia nervosa, a serious eating disorder that can be associated with substantial morbidity and mortality. Seven antidepressant drugs have been tested in double-blind, placebo-controlled studies. Five of these studies demonstrated strongly positive findings, one a weakly positive finding, and one a negative finding. The literature on the association between Aspirin (ASA) use and gastrointestinal haemorrhage (GIH) has been reviewed. The effectiveness of levamisole in the immunmodulatory treatment of chronic hepatitis was assessed in a multicentric double blind trial. Twenty patients received in the first week 50 mg, in the second 100 mg and thereafter 150 mg, levamisole on two days every week for 6 months, 20 others received a placebo. In clinical trials of vasoactive and antiserotonin agents in Duchenne muscular dystrophy, we found that methysergide, 8 mg daily, was associated with an average 44% improvement in Gower Time (i.e., time to arise from supine) and an average 16% improvement in ward walking time. Following the observation that two patients with depression and essential orthostatic hypotension recovered from the latter affection after yohimbine administration, an open study was conducted to assess the activity of yohimbine in correcting orthostatic hypotension induced by tricyclic antidepressants. Results were conclusive in 10 of the 11 patients treated, and were confirmed in a further 12 cases during a double-blind study. Yohimbine appears to be the most effective treatment for orthostatic hypotension, either essential or induced by thymoanaleptic or neuroleptic therapy.

Seventy-seven patients with multiple common warts were screened for a double-blind study using levamisole. Of these, only 32 patients showed cellular immune deficiency. Fourteen patients received 2.5 mg/kg, two days a week, for eight weeks, and eighteen received a placebo. Both groups showed some improvement but results were not statistically different. Placebo plays a significant role in the treatment of warts.

We evaluated the effect of phenylpropanolamine hydrochloride (PPA) in 14 young, healthy, normotensive women who concurrently received indomethacin.
