Audiological performance after cochlear implantation in children with inner ear malformations.

OBJECTIVES: To prove that cochlear implantation is a beneficial method of rehabilitation in deaf children with malformations of the inner ear. DESIGN: The evaluation of auditory responses to speech (EARS) test battery was performed on the children in this study after an average implant use of 3 years. RESULTS: Individual results of six children with inner ear anomalies receiving cochlear implants are presented in this study. Three of the patients showed an incomplete partition (Mondini dysplasia), one had a cochlear hypoplasia and two suffered from an intraoperative cerebrospinal fluid leak.

Recurrent inner ear decompression sickness associated with a patent foramen ovale.

Isolated inner ear injuries occurring during shallow scuba dives are an uncommon manifestation of decompression sickness in recreational divers. We describe a patient who presented with the typical symptoms of inner ear involvement after 2 independent dives within the decompression limits. The diver reported symptoms of unilateral (right-sided) hearing loss, tinnitus, and vertigo after dives to 35 and 50 m. After treatment with hyperbaric oxygen, his symptoms completely resolved. To confirm the hypothesis of inner ear decompression sickness (IEDCS), we examined the patient for a right-to-left

[Local antibiotic administration decreases risk of inner ear damage in effodation].

BACKGROUND: Mobilising the stapes via the removal of the tympanosclerotic plaques from the oval window niche (effodation) and stapedectomy or malleovestibulopexy are the different procedures generally available for the surgical therapy of stapes fixation due to tympanosclerosis. These techniques bear a significant risk of sensory hearing loss. Here we analyse our results using the mobilisation technique together with locally applied antibiotics. PATIENTS: Nineteen ears in seventeen patients with tympanosclerosis involving the stapes and its footplate which underwent stapes mobilisation betwee

Morphometry of fish inner ear otoliths after development at 3g hypergravity.

Size and asymmetry (size difference between the left and right sides) of inner ear otoliths of larval cichlid fish were determined after a long-term stay in moderate hypergravity conditions (3g; centrifuge), in the course of which the animals completed their ontogenetic development from hatch to freely swimming. Neither the normal morphogenetic development nor the timely onset and gain of performance of swimming behaviour were impaired by the experimental conditions. However, both utricular and saccular otoliths (lapilli and sagittae, respectively) were significantly smaller after hyper-g expo

Intratympanic steroid treatment of inner ear disease and tinnitus (preliminary report).

Intratympanic instillation of Depo-Medrol (80 mg/cc), dexamethasone ophthalmic solution (1 mg/cc), or dexamethasone intravenous (4 mg/cc) solution produces improvement of cochlear function in certain patients with Meniere's disease, autoimmune inner ear disease and sudden sensorineural deafness. Tinnitus improved in 47%, most often in patients with Meniere's disease (9 of 15; 60%). The SRT improvement of greater than 10 dB or SD greater than 15% was documented in 41% (average improvement in SRT: 15 dB; SD: 24%). Patients with tinnitus and bilateral sensorineural hearing loss (i.e., presbycusis

Relapsing polychondritis--two cases with tracheal stenosis and inner ear involvement.

Relapsing polychondritis is a rare disease which often presents firstly to ear, nose and throat (ENT) departments. Its complications, respiratory, cardiovascular, renal and neurological are life-threatening; thus it is important to recognize the disease and its complications early. Treatment for relapsing polychondritis may have serious side-effects which should be taken into account when managing these patients. We report two young patients with relapsing polychondritis and their treatments; both had severe tracheal stenosis responding in one case to pharmacological and in the other to surgic

Isolation of mumps virus from the inner ear after sudden deafness.

A 26-year-old woman with bilateral otosclerosis underwent right stapedectomy with an excellent result. One year later, however, she developed symptoms of mumps and within two days was completely deaf in the right ear. Prompt surgical exploration excluded a complication of the otosclerosis and a perilymph fistula, but culture of a sample of perilymph grew mumps virus. The case provides direct evidence of a relation between mumps virus infection and inner-ear damage.

Numerical analysis of three-dimensional middle ear and inner ear based on nonlinear and viscoelastic constitutive relations.

Hearing is a critical sensory function for humans, and the dynamic behavior of the human ear is influenced by its constitutive relation. In this paper, a finite element model (FEM) of the middle ear with a nonlinear constitutive relation and the inner ear with a viscoelastic constitutive relation was developed based on CT scanning data of the clinical human ear. The frequency-response at the tympanic membrane (TM) and stapes footplate (SF), as well as the amplitude-frequency response and time-domain response curves at different positions of the basilar membrane (BM) were obtained by using the

Whole-ear finite element analysis of superior semicircular canal dehiscence and its impact on inner-ear responses.

OBJECTIVE: To establish a high-fidelity finite element method (FEM) model of the human inner ear and explore the biomechanical effects of superior semicircular canal dehiscence (SCD) on both cochlear and vestibular function. METHODS: A detailed FEM model of the entire human ear was reconstructed from high-resolution computed tomography (CT) data. The model was validated through comparison with established experimental data, including basilar membrane (BM) displacement patterns, cochlear tonotopy, inner ear impedance, and middle-ear transfer function. After validation, the model was adapted to

The homeobox gene Emx2 underlies middle ear and inner ear defects in the deaf mouse mutant pardon.

The semi-dominantly inherited mouse mutation pardon (Pdo) was isolated due to the lack of a Preyer reflex (ear flick) in response to sound from a large-scale N -ethyl- N -nitrosourea (ENU) mutagenesis programme. Dissection of the middle ear revealed malformations in all three ossicles, rendering the ossicular chain incomplete. Hair cell counts in the apical turn of the organ of Corti revealed a significant 22.7% increase in the number of outer hair cells. Raised compound action potential thresholds in Pdo/+ mutants suggested a combined sensorineural/conductive hearing loss. We show that a miss

Interaction-aware dexterous robot for minimally invasive transcanal inner ear interventions.

Intracochlear theranostics, particularly targeted drug delivery and microsampling, offers a promising solution to inner ear diseases. However, specialized medical devices remain limited by a fundamental design challenge imposed by anatomical constraints: balancing miniaturization, dexterity, and perceptive functionality. Here, we present a low-aspect-ratio, dual-segment continuum robot that integrates catheter, endoscopic and instrumental functions. Driven by antagonistic cables, the robot uses a transition-free backbone composed of saddle-shaped joints to achieve a minimum bending radius of 1

[Differential diagnosis of bilateral Ménière's disease and autoimmune inner ear disease].

Introduction: Ménière’s disease is an incurable, but manageable disease. The basis of its pathophysiology is the ‘enlargement’ of the endolymphatic space, which is called endolymphatic hydrops. It can be one- or two-sided, the latter is bilateral Ménière’s disease. Based on the time of the appearance of the symptoms, bilateral Ménière’s disease can be grouped into metachronous or synchronous groups. Autoimmune inner ear disease can present with similar symptoms. Objective: Mapping of the inner ear of patients diagnosed with bilateral Ménière’s disease (7 patients: 2 men and 5 women), assessmen

Noise Stress Abrogates Structure-Specific Endonucleases within the Mammalian Inner Ear.

Nucleotide excision repair (NER) is a multistep biochemical process that maintains the integrity of the genome. Unlike other mechanisms that maintain genomic integrity, NER is distinguished by two irreversible nucleolytic events that are executed by the xeroderma pigmentosum group G (XPG) and xeroderma pigmentosum group F (XPF) structure-specific endonucleases. Beyond nucleolysis, XPG and XPF regulate the overall efficiency of NER through various protein-protein interactions. The current experiments evaluated whether an environmental stressor could negatively affect the expression of Xpg (Ercc

Ecomorphological correlates of inner and middle ear anatomy within phyllostomid bats.

Echolocation is the primary sense used by most bats to navigate their environment. However, the influence of echolocating behaviors upon the morphology of the auditory apparatus remains largely uninvestigated. While it is known that middle ear ossicle size scales positively with body mass across mammals, and that peak call frequency scales negatively with body mass among bats, there are still large gaps in our understanding of the degree to which allometry or ecology influences the morphology of the chiropteran auditory apparatus. To investigate this, we used μCT datasets to quantify three mor
