The results of primary Bateman-Leinbach bipolar prosthetic replacement for comminuted intertrochanteric fractures of the hip in the elderly are examined. In an effort to avoid the postoperative complications seen in open reduction and internal fixation of severely comminuted fractures with osteoporotic bone, and to avoid postoperative restrictions when fixation is suboptimal, a group of 58 patients were treated with a bipolar Bateman-Leinbach prosthesis. One hundred fractures of the tibial shaft were treated by early weight-bearing in a below knee patellar tendon bearing plaster cast. The rate of union, and the range of knee and ankle motion were assessed. Ninety-five per cent had good or excellent results. This method of treatment is particularly valuable in the third world because it avoids the complications of operation and also of traditional conservative methods.

Twenty-two displaced intra-articular fractures of the calcaneus (in twenty-two patients) were treated by open reduction and internal fixation with a screw and one or two staples using a lateral and, when needed, a medial approach, followed by early motion. Infection renal calculi are serious complications of urinary tract diversion in patients with myelomeningocele. During a 12-month period, 10 renal units containing calculi were managed surgically. The kidneys were in patients with multiple previous operations and medical problems. Nine of the ten stones had a staghorn configuration, filling the renal pelvis with calyceal extensions. Between November 1979 and January 1983, we treated fifty-one severe fractures of the tibial shaft with multiple intramedullary Ender nails. Thirty-six fractures were treated within two weeks after injury. Forty-one fractures united in less than four months and eight, in four to eight months. Only two were not united after eight months. An anatomical reduction was maintained in all but three of the fractures, in which the tibia shortened. During a period of 13 years 2000 Caesarean sections were performed in a total of 20 584 deliveries. That means a frequency of 9,7%. Maternal mortality was zero. Maternal morbidity was 72% if one includes all minor complications. Counting only the major postoperative complications the morbidity in our Caesarean sections was not higher than 1%. INTRODUCTION: We evaluated the long-term outcomes for combined, bilateral total knee and hip arthroplasty performed on a group of very young patients with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six consecutive patients with a mean age of 14 years at the time of hip replacement and 16 years at knee replacement were analyzed.
