BACKGROUND: We report results of a technique of Ebstein's anomaly repair by creating a predominantly monocuspid valve with simultaneous ventricularization of the atrialized right ventricular (aRV) chamber.
METHODS: Between March 1993 and April 2003, Ebstein's anomaly repair by valvuloplasty with combined ventricularization was performed in 23 patients aged 13.6 (4.1-52.6) years presenting with tricuspid valve regurgitation (TVR) (I degrees, n = 1; II degrees, n = 3; III degrees, n = 13; IV degrees, n = 6). Valvuloplasty consisted of creating a predominantly monocuspid valve at the level of th

A case of Ebstein's anomaly with functional pulmonary atresia diagnosed in utero is presented. The diagnosis was confirmed by postnatal echocardiographic, angiographic, and postmortem pathologic findings. On echocardiography the septal leaflet of the tricuspid valve was displaced towards the right ventricular apex. The tricuspid valve was moderately regurgitant and the arterial duct was patent. Continuous wave or color Doppler revealed serious reduction in forward flow from right ventricle through the pulmonary arteries; however, massive pulmonary regurgitation was observed. Pulmonary circulat

A 27-year-old male who had been diagnosed with Ebstein's anomaly was admitted with uncontrollable congestive heart failure. The echocardiogram revealed severe tricuspid valve incompetence and the electrocardiogram showed atrial fibrillation. He underwent Hetzer's repair procedure for tricuspid valve incompetence and Minzioni's right atrial isolation technique to restore sinus rhythm. His congestive heart failure quickly disappeared and sinus rhythm was restored after operation. He was discharged 3 weeks postoperatively and remains well 22 months after his operation. Hetzer's technique for tric

UNLABELLED: Patients with Ebstein's anomaly (M.E.) are known to have a high potential for developing arrhythmia, in the vast majority, of the tachycardia type. Most of these tachycardias are based on accessory pathways (AP) located along the anomalous atrioventricular valve, found in up to 30% of this patient cohort. Next to this main representative for congenital arrhythmogenic substrates, various types of acquired tachycardia were found in patients with M.E., such as atrial ectopic tachycardia (AET), atrial flutter (A. Flutt.), atrial reentry tachycardia (ART), atrial fibrillation and ventri

The aim of the study was to evaluate cardiorespiratory exercise tolerance in asymptomatic children with Ebstein's anomaly. Eleven children with a mean age of 9.6 years were prospectively studied by spirometry, cardiopulmonary exercise testing (bicycle ergometer n = 8, treadmill test n = 3), and contrast echocardiography. A right-to-left atrial shunt was detected by contrast echocardiography in 7 children (group 1), whereas no shunt was found in 4 (group 2). VO2 max was decreased [84.5 (SD = 16.8)] and was strongly correlated to oxygen saturation in group 1 (p < 0.0001). Oxygen saturation at pe

Ebstein's anomaly of the tricuspid valve is a relatively uncommon congenital heart defect. Twenty-one patients (11 boys and 10 girls) with Ebstein's anomaly were reviewed regarding clinical characteristics and factors related to the outcome of this lesion. Their ages at presentation ranged from 1 day to 13 years (median = 11 months). Eleven patients presented in infancy period, 6 of them were neonates. Common clinical findings were systolic murmur (85.7%) and cyanosis (57.1%). Laboratory findings included cardiomegaly on chest X-rays (95.2%), right bundle branch block pattern (76.2%) and right

Ebstein's anomaly is the most common congenital abnormality of the tricuspid valve and accounts for about 0.5% of cases of the congenital heart diseases. It has occasionally been associated with other syndromes but not with the congenital deafmutism. The first case of Ebstein's anomaly associated with the congenital deafmutism is reported. The patient remained asymptomatic until the age of 35 years and presented with palpitations and dizzy spells. This patient also manifested mitral valve prolapse and Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome with right-sided accessory conduction pathway.

OBJECTIVE: A modified technique for tricuspid valve repair in Ebstein's anomaly restructures the valve mechanism at the level of the true tricuspid anulus by using the most mobile leaflet for valve closure without plication of the atrialized chamber. Midterm results of this therapeutic approach for patients with Ebstein's anomaly and tricuspid valve incompetence are reported.
METHODS: Between October 1988 and April 1997, the incompetent tricuspid valve was repaired with our technique in 19 patients (12 female, 7 male; 2 to 54 years, mean 21 years). The indication for operation was congestive

BACKGROUND AND AIM: In Ebstein's anomaly, the septal and posterior tricuspid leaflets are plastered to the endocardium. We postulated that tricuspid valve function could be corrected by restoring mobility of these leaflets. (Feasibility of such repair was explored by anatomical and clinical studies.)
METHODS: Ten heart specimens with Ebstein's anomaly were examined to investigate the size of the tricuspid leaflets. We operated on four patients with Ebstein's anomaly: the plastered septal and posterior leaflets were mobilized from the endocardium, the atrialized right ventricle was longitudina

Ebstein's anomaly of the tricuspid valve is a relatively uncommon congenital heart defect which consists of an apical displacement of the valvar annulus with a deformity of the septal and posterior leaflets. We report 35 cases studied from 1969 to 1993 (45% males and 55% females). One patient presented a polymalformation syndrome and another had a case of Ebstein's anomaly amongst his siblings. We performed an echocardiography in 31 patients and a catheterization in 15. The mean follow-up was 7.6 years (range: 1 day to 16.1 years). The diagnosis was established during the neonatal period in 66

A 8-year-old girl with Ebstein's anomaly was operated on because of progressive heart failure caused by severe tricuspid regurgitation. At the operation, the tricuspid leaflets were found to be destroyed, and the annulus was very enlarged. The enlarged true tricuspid annulus was constricted using the DeVega method, and the tricuspid valve was replaced on the true annulus using a porcine valve. To avoid injury to the auriculoventricular bundle, the suture line was shifted to the false annulus at the portion close to the course of His' bundle. Postoperative course was uneventful in satisfactory

OBJECTIVES: This study was conducted to investigate the presentation and outcome of patients with Ebstein's anomaly of the tricuspid valve.
BACKGROUND: Ebstin's anomaly may present at any age and has a highly variable clinical course. Previous natural history studies have been based on clinical and angiographic diagnosis and have included mainly older children and adults. Echocardiography, however, has facilitated fetal and neonatal diagnosis so that the natural history needs to be redefined.
METHODS: We reviewed 220 cases of Ebstein's anomaly presenting from fetal to adult life between 1958

For surgical management of Ebstein's anomaly, a new technique of tricuspid valve replacement on the true annulus, avoiding injury to the conduction system, has been developed. At operation, the valve fixation sutures are placed around the true annulus except for a part of Koch's triangle. A 3 x 3 cm xenograft patch is sutured to cover the atrioventricular node and bundle of His. The remainder of the valve fixation sutures in Koch's triangle are placed only on the patch to prevent conduction injury, and the valve fixation annulus is completed. This new technique has been applied to three patien

Two adult cases of Ebstein's anomaly underwent Carpentier's procedure. In the first case longitudinal plication limited to free wall of atrialized ventricle was performed and postoperative course was uneventful. In the second case preoperative echocardiography showed apparently restricted movement of anterior leaflet of the tricuspid valve which was compatible with intraoperative findings. That is, inferior edge of anterior leaflet was partly adherent to ventricular wall and systolic bulging of leaflet was significantly impaired which was left untouched but should be repaired by additional pro

Ebstein's anomaly appearing during the neonatal period carries a high mortality rate. These infants exhibit cyanosis, acidosis, and congestive heart failure. The pathophysiologic characteristics consist of severe tricuspid regurgitation and functional pulmonary atresia. As a result of the inability of the right ventricle to generate forward flow through the pulmonary arteries, these infants remain dependent on ductal patency. Since May 1988, five newborn infants with severe Ebstein's anomaly have been admitted for treatment at our institution. At initial examination, they weighed 3.6 +/- 1.8 k

We describe the contribution of 2-dimensional colour-coded Doppler echocardiography to identifying, in a 15-year-old girl a clinically mild Ebstein's anomaly with associated ventricular septal defect (VSD) which, by pulsed-Doppler, was misinterpreted as Ebstein's anomaly with tricuspid regurgitation.

To determine which morphologic features are associated with early death, the complete echocardiograms and medical records of 16 consecutive patients with Ebstein's anomaly and concordant atrioventricular connections who presented in the fetal (n = 5) or neonatal (n = 11) period were reviewed. The cohort was classified into two groups on the basis of survival at 3 months. Group 1 consisted of seven patients who died at less than or equal to 3 months of age, and Group 2 consisted of the nine surviving patients. Comparing Groups 1 and 2, the respective incidence rates of morphologic features that
