INTRODUCTION: Common features of autoimmune polyendocrinopathy-candidiasis-ectodermal dysplasia include candidiasis, hypoparathyroidism and hypoadrenalism. The initial manifestation of autoimmune polyendocrinopathy-candidiasis-ectodermal dysplasia may be autoimmune hepatitis, keratoconjunctivitis, frequent fever with or without a rash, chronic diarrhea, or different combinations of these with or without oral candidiasis.
CASE PRESENTATION: We discuss a profoundly affected 2.9-year-old Caucasian girl of Western European descent with a dramatic response to immunosuppression (initially azathiopr…

BACKGROUND: Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED) is a congenital disorder characterized by sparse hair, oligodontia, and inability to sweat. It is caused by mutations in any of three Eda pathway genes: ectodysplasin (Eda), Eda receptor (Edar), and Edar-associated death domain (Edaradd), which encode ligand, receptor, and intracellular adaptor molecule, respectively. The Eda signaling pathway activates NF-κB, which is central to ectodermal differentiation. Although the causative genes and the molecular pathway affecting HED have been identified, no curative treatment for HED has been establi…

PURPOSE: The aims of this article are to critique the available literature on dental implants in patients with ectodermal dysplasia (ED) syndrome and tooth agenesis, review the outcomes of implant therapy in these patients, and provide recommendations on the timing of implant placement for these patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Searches were performed using Medline, Embase, All EBM Reviews, and Pre-Medline for articles relating to implant patients suffering from ED. Articles unrelated to the topic of dental implants in patients with ED and tooth agenesis, without abstracts, or in languages ot…

Ectodermal dysplasia is a hereditary syndrome characterized by dysplasia of tissues of ectodermal origin (hair, skin, nails, and teeth) and occasionally, dysplasia of mesodermally derived tissues. The triad of nail dystrophy (onychodysplasia), alopecia, or hypotrichosis (scanty, fine, light hair on the scalp and eyebrows) and palmoplantar hypohidrosis is usually accompanied by lack of sweat glands and partial or complete absence of primary and permanent dentition. Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia usually has an X-linked inheritance and affects only males severely, while female heterozygotes s…

Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia is a rare congenital disease that affects several ectodermal structures. The condition is usually transmitted as an x-linked recessive trait, in which gene is carried by the females and manifested in males. Manifestations of the disease differ in severity and involve teeth, skin, hair, nails and sweat and sebaceous gland. Ectodermal dysplasia is usually a difficult condition to manage. Prosthodontically, because of the typical oral deficiencies, and afflicted individuals are quite young to receive extensive prosthodontic treatment, which restores their appeara…

The ectodermal dysplasias (ED) are a large and complex group of diseases characterized by anomalies of the ectoderm and its derivates, often associated with malformations in other organs. We report a patient with an ectodermal dysplasia affecting hair, teeth, and nails and malformations of all four extremities including absence of several rays in the hands and feet. This patient shares many similarities with odontotrichomelic syndrome, a rare ectodermal dysplasia syndrome that has so far only been described in three individuals. However, some differences exist and this patient might also repre…

Ectodermal dysplasia with oligodontia and anodontia is characterized by absence or deficiency of the alveolar ridges. The optimal surgical and prosthetic approach varies in relation to patient age and the amount of bone that is present. This clinical report presents rehabilitation alternatives for ectodermal dysplasia in children and adolescents.

Among the ectodermal dysplasias, there are several examples of overlapping phenotypes in disorders that are considered distinct. We report a 5-year-old boy born to nonconsanguineous parents and presenting with ectodermal dysplasia, ankyloblepharon filiforme adnatum, and bilateral choanal atresia consistent with the diagnosis of AEC syndrome. We compare the findings in our patient with the previous reported cases and discuss the overlapping phenotype of this disorder with CHAND syndrome.

The occurrence of alveolar bone growth after placement of endosteal mandibular implants in two edentulous children is reported. The fact that alveolar bone growth occurred in the absence of natural teeth suggests that its growth and preservation is dependent upon biomechanical factors rather than the presence of teeth, as is traditionally thought.

Margarita Island ectodermal dysplasia (ED4) is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by unusual facies, dental anomalies, hypotrichosis, palmoplantar hyperkeratosis and onychodysplasia, syndactyly, and cleft lip/cleft palate. We have used an affected-only DNA-pooling strategy to carry out linkage disequilibrium mapping of the ED4 gene to 11q23. Haplotype analysis of four complex Margarita Island ED4 families localized the ED4 gene to an approximately 1-2-Mb interval spanned by just two YACs.

A patient with hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia and anodontia was studied clinically and cephalometrically from 6 to 18 years of age. This case is exceptional in that the patient was a young girl. Five sets of complete dentures were fitted during this period. Periodic recall examination and adjustment maintained good oral function and aesthetics. Serial cephalometric analysis of craniofacial development revealed that growth of the maxilla was slightly reduced, but there was no detectable effect in the mandible. Three-dimensional analysis of the alveolar ridge form from serial casts showed tha…

The ectrodactyly, ectodermal dysplasia, and cleft palate syndrome is a rare type of ectodermal dysplasia. It usually occurs either as an autosomal dominant trait or in a sporadic form. We describe a neonate with this syndrome and generalized telangiectasias, an association that, to the best of our knowledge, has not been previously reported.

A 19-year-old female with ectodermal dysplasia, lipoatrophy, diabetes mellitus, and amastia is described. This complex of symptoms is very similar to that of a case published by Pinheiro et al [1983] under the acronym of AREDYLD syndrome.

Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED) is a genetic condition that affects structures derived from the ectoderm during embryonic development. These structures include the outermost layer of the primary germ layers, which give rise to various body parts such as the ears, eyes, lips, and mucous membranes of the nose and mouth. Due to the impact on these structures, hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia can manifest differently in various age groups. However, the three primary characteristics typically associated with this condition are hypotrichosis, hypohidrosis, and hypodontia or anodontia. Here,…

INTRODUCTION: Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED) patients suffering of oligo-anodontia require early dental treatment to improve oral functions and reduce social impairment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the skeletal growth, implant and prosthetic survival rate, success, and complications after the rehabilitation with a maxillary denture and an implant-supported overdenture provided by a sliding bar in case of severe hypodontia/anodontia related to HED.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective cohort study began in 2009. Nine patients over 7 years old with HED and associated oli…
