A Model for Holistic Review in Graduate Admissions That Decouples the GRE from Race, Ethnicity, and Gender.

Graduate schools around the United States are working to improve access to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) in a manner that reflects local and national demographics. The admissions process has been the focus of examination, as it is a potential bottleneck for entry into STEM. Standardized tests are widely used as part of the decision-making process; thus, we examined the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) in two models of applicant review: metrics-based applicant review and holistic applicant review to understand whether it affected applicant demographics at The Univers

Inquiry-driven strategies for innovation in medical education: experiences in India.

Four medical institutes, viz, AIIMS, New Delhi; CMC, Vellore; JIPMER, Pondicherry and IMS-BHU, Varanasi formed a consortium to introduce reforms in undergraduate medical education. A detailed inquiry was conducted by administering questionnaires to the faculty, recent graduates and patients to identify the deficiencies in the present system. Morbidity patterns prevalent in the community at primary, secondary and tertiary care levels were determined. These were matched with the actual curricula being followed and the assessment patterns. The main findings were: inadequate emphasis on practical

How are we preparing doctors for their roles as patient educators? Exploring undergraduate and postgraduate curricula in Canadian medical schools.

BACKGROUND: Although patient education (PE) has been identified as an important strategy to support patients with low health literacy, medical trainees report feeling ill-prepared for this responsibility. Our goal was to explore how PE training is incorporated centrally into undergraduate (UGME) and postgraduate (PGME) education across Canada, with the aim of proposing a PE curriculum. METHODS: We circulated a web-based survey to all Canadian UGME and PGME Associate Deans, subsequently expanding the scope of our investigation by surveying Family Medicine and Pediatrics program directors. Data

Pandemic-Related Disruptions in Nursing Education: Zooming Out for an Innovative Interprofessional Simulation.

When the COVID-19 global pandemic began, many higher education systems had to restructure their educational delivery system and transition to online learning. This posed a challenge for students in health professions education programs as it impacted their ability to participate in hands-on learning regarding patient care. As a result, the University of Cincinnati College of Nursing developed and implemented simulation-based learning experiences to allow graduate-level social worker, counselor, and psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner students the opportunity to learn as an interdiscip

Is medical education systemically racist?

After the murder of George Floyd, many professions, organizations, and institutions have begun to confront the long and persistent legacy of racism in the United States. Within that context, it is critically important for the medical education community to address the question of whether medical education is systemically racist, and if so, what should be done to address this problem. In this commentary, this author seeks to answer these questions, primarily by focusing on the role of standardized multiple-choice examinations in determining who gains admission to medical school and which medica

Case writing as a vehicle for promoting cultural competency: a retrospective, descriptive qualitative analysis.

BACKGROUND: A variety of approaches are available that provide cultural competency education for practicing physicians. There is, however, still a need for additional, innovative approaches that address continuing education and professional improvement regarding cultural competency for physicians after their training. OBJECTIVE: To assess the potential impact on established clinicians of writing an extended case narrative on cultural competency. METHODS: We conducted structured interviews of physician contributors (n = 14) to a book of cases on cultural competency. Authors were invited to co

The State of the Transitional Year: Results From a National Survey of Program Directors.

BACKGROUND: The transitional year (TY) residency program is a rapidly growing and unique program where the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) permits innovations in structure, design, and curriculum delivery. However, little is known about how programs differ within this framework and what constitutes typical TY curriculum. Understanding this variation is important because TY programs serve as the foundational clinical year for residents entering numerous advanced specialties. To our knowledge, there is no study investigating these differences. OBJECTIVE: To describe

An AUDacious Proposal: How to Improve Gastroenterology Fellow Training for Alcohol Use Disorder and Alcohol-Associated Liver Disease.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD), an increasingly prevalent and treatable cause for alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD), is the most common reason for liver transplantation and liver-related deaths in the United States. Despite overwhelming evidence that ALD-related mortality and healthcare costs are rising, patients with ALD are generally undertreated for AUD. Though multidisciplinary care models integrating addiction medicine, hepatology, and social workers, with established training for health professionals on ALD-related stigma can address this treatment gap, numerous barriers exist, which in
