Enhancing power density and cycle life of NMC811 battery cathodes via combined dense calendering and laser patterning.

The charging time of Li-ion batteries is an important bottleneck in the wider adoption of electric vehicles (EVs). A common strategy to impr … dance growth. We demonstrated a reduction in oxygen loss by both electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) mapping, X-ray diffraction (XRD) mapping and X-ray diffraction computed tomography (XRD-CT). Overall, SC-NMC811 electrode's ability to withstand over-calendering offers the opportunity to introduce laser patterned holes while maintaining the averag …

Garvicin KS, a Broad-Spectrum Bacteriocin Protects Zebrafish Larvae against Lactococcus garvieae Infection.

Bacteriocins are emerging as a viable alternative to antibiotics due to their ability to inhibit growth or kill antibiotic resistant pathogens. Herein, we evaluated the ability of the bacteriocin Garvicin KS (GarKS) produced by Lactococcus garvieae KS1546 isolated from cow milk to inhibit the growth of fish and foodborne bacterial pathogens. We found that GarKS inhibited the growth of five fish L. garvieae strains isolated from infected trout and eels. Among fish pathogens, GarKS inhibited the growth of Streptococcus agalactiae serotypes Ia and Ib, and Aeromonas hydrophila but did not inhibit …

Physical origins of speed control in swimming fishes.

The linear relationship between tail-beat frequency and swimming speed in fish, first described by Bainbridge in 1958, has since been confirmed in species as disparate as eels and tuna. Dimensional scaling has explained why linearity should emerge at high Reynolds numbers, but the frequency-speed relationship itself has remained empirical, with no physical framework describing its behavior across swimming regimes, and no account of what sets the two quantities that define it: the distance covered per tail beat and the frequency below which forward motion supposedly ceases. Here, we derive a re…

Evaluating species at risk in data-limited fisheries: A productivity-susceptibility analysis for marine aquarium fish.

The marine aquarium trade (MAT) is a significant global industry harvesting millions of wild-caught, live coral reef fishes for public and p … ssment and management initiatives. Most teleost fish in the trade are considered sustainable, while eels and elasmobranchs have the highest vulnerability scores. A comparative case study between our PSA and the popular FishBase vulnerability tool illustrates how the latter can be ill-suited to handle the data limitations common to nonfood fishes. Our s …

Polymer-Grafted WS2 Nanocomposites: from Edge-Site Passivation to Melt-Stable Fused Granular Fabrication.

Layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are widely regarded as chemically inert nanofillers in polymer composites. Here, we demonstr … polymerization of ε-caprolactone. Spectroscopic and microscopic analyses (XPS, XRD, HAADF-STEM, and EELS) demonstrate that polymer grafting is confined to edge and defect sites, while preserving the multilayer 2H-WS2 lattice. Comparative Kinetics of Acetyl- and Butyryl-Cholinesterase Inhibition by Green Tea Catechins|Relevance to the Symptomatic Treatment of Alzheimer's Disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterised by the apoptosis of cholinergic neurons and the consequent attenuation of acetylcholine mediated neurotransmission, resulting in neurodegeneration. Acetyl-cholinesterase (AChE) and butyryl-cholinesterase (BuChE) are attractive therapeutic targets in the treatment of AD since inhibition of these enzymes can be used to restore synaptic concentrations of acetylcholine. Whilst inhibitors for these enzymes such as galantamine and rivastigmine have been approved for use, none are able to halt the progression of AD and are responsible for the production of tr

Dual vision transformer with bio-inspired optimization for explainable keratoconus classification.

BACKGROUND: Keratoconus (KCN) is a progressive degenerative corneal disorder characterized by corneal thinning and cone-shaped protrusion, leading to significant visual impairment if not detected early. Accurate staging of KCN using corneal topographic maps is critical for timely diagnosis and effective treatment planning. METHODS: This study proposes an enhanced deep learning framework for KCN stage classification based on corneal topographic images. The model employs a Dual Vision Transformer (DViT) to effectively capture both local and global spatial features. To optimize model performance

Fast fabrication of stimuli-responsive MXene-based hydrogels for high-performance actuators with simultaneous actuation and self-sensing capability.

Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) composite hydrogels have recently emerged as promising candidates for soft hydrogel actuators. However, developing a facile and fast method to obtain multifunctional PNIPAM hydrogel actuators with simulating biological versatility remains a major challenge. Herein, we developed a fast-redox initiation system to prepare PNIPAM/sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)/T3C2Tx MXene nanocomposite hydrogel with multidirectional actuating behaviors and improved mechanical properties. The rapid thermoresponsive behavior of the PNIPAM/CMC/MXene layer bestows its corres

Amalgamation of experimental strategies, computational simulation, and computer-assisted-theoretical analysis to decipher the interaction of newly synthesized plumbagin-indole-3-propionic ester with cholinesterases.

Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) are important target proteins to treat cognitive dysfunction in neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson disease. Hence identification of inhibitors against these proteins is ever-growing. To get a foresight on the potential of a molecule that could be forwarded as a drug candidate, the combinations of bioinformatics [including molecular docking and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation], computer-assisted-theoretical analysis and in vitro strategy were employed to gain knowledge on interaction/inhibition of

Supervised model based polycystic ovarian syndrome detection in relation to vitamin d deficiency by exploring different feature selection techniques.

Due to urbanization and modern lifestyle, most of women in today's world are prone to Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), which is a hormonal disorder. Though the symptoms shown by this disease are often uncared, it seriously affects the reproductive health of women. Early detection of PCOS helps in managing several other attributes that are closely related to it. This article aims to study the impact of Vitamin D3 in PCOS and non-PCOS individuals. The goal is attained by building a tailored dataset with 1368 records and 43 attributes. Initially, the acquired dataset is pre-processed by handli

Development of potent cholinesterase inhibitors based on a marine pharmacophore.

The management of neurological disorders such as dementia associated with Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease includes the use of cholinesterase inhibitors. These compounds can slow down the progression of these diseases and can also be used in the treatment of glaucoma and myasthenia gravis. The majority of the cholinesterase inhibitors used in the clinic are derived from natural products and our current paper describes the use of a small marine pharmacophore to develop potent and selective cholinesterase inhibitors. Fourteen small inhibitors were designed based on recent discoveries about the

In situ production of methylmercury within a stream channel in northern California.

Natural stream ecosystems throughout the world are contaminated by methylmercury, a highly toxic compound that bioaccumulates and biomagnifies in aquatic food webs. Wetlands are widely recognized as hotspots for the production of methylmercury and are often assumed to be the main sources of this neurotoxin in downstream ecosystems. However, many streams lacking wetlands in their drainage basins (e.g., montane and semiarid regions in the western United States) have significant methylmercury contamination, and the sources of methylmercury in these streams remain largely unknown. In this study, w

Human anisakiasis may occur after ingestion of raw marine fish infected with nematode larvae of Anisakidae. Anisakiasis caused by the migration of the larva into the wall of stomach, small intestine and other portion has been reported in Korea. This prospective study was made of all cases referred to parasitological laboratory in Cheju-do between June 1989 and June 1992. Gastric anisakiasis was confirmed if larvae invading the gastric wall were observed by gastrofiberscopy. One hundred and seven cases were diagnosed, most of which were in 30-49 years old. Most of the patients complained acute

Mode of action of ciguatoxin from the Spanish Mackerel, Scomberomorus commersoni, on the guinea-pig ileum and vas deferens.

Ciguatoxin causes a sustained contraction of the guinea-pig ileum at all doses tested. The contraction was dose dependent and at a high dose of 0.25 mouse units/ml the contraction lasted for approximately 24 min. Associated with this sustained contraction were bursts of contractile activity. The ileum was refractory to repeated doses of ciguatoxin. The response to ciguatoxin was completely blocked by atropine, tetrodotoxin and low Na+ Ringer but was unaffected by hexamethonium or mepyramine. Ciguatoxin did not alter ileal responses to histamine, acetylcholine and 5-hydroxytryptamine. The ileal

Gait determinants of undulatory swimming via energy optimality principles.

Animals with a slender body such as eels progress by propagating body waves; this swimming mode is called anguilliform. Though anguilliform swimming has been studied extensively, its optimality and gait selection principles remain unknown. Here, through model-based optimal gait analysis, we propose that three dimensionless characteristic parameters -- the stride length, muscle mechanical efficiency and environmental force anisotropy -- shape the gait, and they respectively determine a whole or a fraction of body undulation, a more C-shaped or S-shaped body wave, and the overall body undulation…

Dive Injury and Jellyfish Sting Case Study.

INTRODUCTION: Wildlife exposure is a risk that trained divers are fully aware of. Examples of hazardous wildlife that divers may encounter include, but are not limited to, sharks, coral, sponges, eels, and jellyfish. Encountering wildlife can lead to a diver panicking or being forced to surface rapidly or in an uncontrolled manner due to panic or avoidance of the hazard. This may increase the risk of decompression illness (DCI), mainly pulmonary overinflation syndrome (POIS). Injuries caused by hazardous aquatic wildlife can also be distracting, leading dive supervisors and/or medical personne…
