[Exchangeable electrolytes, glycoregulation and growth hormone in one case of Bartter's syndrome (author's transl)].

Total body water (T.B.W), extra-cellular fluid volume (E.C.F.), exchangeable sodium (NaE) and potassium (KE) were measured in one typical case of Bartter's syndrome with growth retardation. Intracellular potassium depletion was associated with a slight impaired carbohydrate tolerance and with decreased growth hormone response to arginine infusion and insulin-induced hypoglycemia. These observations demonstrate that impairement of growth hormone responses to stimulation occur in Bartter's syndrome with potassium depletion.

[Liverfunction and serum concentration of electrolytes in patients operated for morbid obesity (author's transl)].

50 patients with morbid obesity underwent a Jejuno-Ileostomy. The liver function was tested before operation and postoperatively up to 24 months. Simultaneously the concentration of potassium, natrium, calcium, magnesium and chloride was examined. The concentration of bilirubin did not show any important changes. Thymol turbidity was within the limit. 3 months after the operation an increase of the activity of SGPT and SGOT was noted, as well as the increase of BSP retention. 6 months after the operation a decrease of concentration of potassium and calcium in serum was observed. 3 patients dev

The effect of hydrochlorothiazide and amiloride administered together on muscle electrolytes in normal subjects.

Hydrochlorothiazide, 150 mg daily, and amiloride, 15 mg daily, have been administered together to 10 normal subjects during one week. Muscle biopsies were performed before and after the period of administration of the diuretics and the material was analysed for water and electrolytes. The body weight decreased by 1.9 kg. The serum sodium, chloride and potassium concentrations decreased significantly and standard bicarbonate and blood pH increased. In muscle tissue, extracellular water, chloride and sodium contents and intracellular sodium concentration decreased but the muscle potassium conten…

The influence of a heparin-like compound on hypertension, electrolytes and aldosterone in man.

The mechanisms of the aldosterone-inhibiting and antihypertensive actions of heparin and certain other sulfated mucopolysaccharides were investigated in 13 hypertensive patients. N-formyl chitosan polysulfuric acid (RO 1-8307) was used rather than heparin because of its low anticoagulant activity. RO 1-8307 lowered aldosterone secretion in one patient with proved and one with probable primary aldosteronism; this indicates that the mucopolysaccharide does not inhibit aldosterone secretion via the renin-angiotensin mechanism. In six hypertensive patients RO 1-8307 caused a fall in the secretion

Theory of ion chemical potentials in heterogeneous electrolyte environments.

Electrochemical applications, ranging from energy storage to electrocatalysis and separations, involve ions in heterogeneous environments such as electrode/electrolyte interfaces, material interphases, and confined spaces. These environments influence ion thermodynamics through their effect on chemical potentials and, consequently, on the driving forces relevant to ion transport and electrochemical processes. In addition, features in bulk electrolytes, such as different ion sizes and valence asymmetries, act as intrinsic heterogeneities in an otherwise homogeneous solution. Approaches for mode…

Study on Vertical Non-Uniformity of Plasma Electrolytic Polishing.

Aiming at non-uniformity in the vertical direction in the polishing effect on stainless steel after plasma electrolytic polishing (PEP), this paper took 304 L stainless steel as the research object. Under an ammonium sulfate electrolyte system with a mass fraction of 2.5 wt%, PEP was carried out utilizing different placement methods for the anode and electrolyte temperatures, and the causes of non-uniformity in the polishing process were explored. Experimental results demonstrate that the vertical polishing inhomogeneity originates from the upward movement of unruptured bubbles at the sample b

Charge localization, rectification, and transport in electrolyte patchy nanochannels.

We study ionic charge localization and transport in electrolyte-filled nanochannels with heterogeneous walls. Localized charged patches at the channel boundaries trap counterions, enabling controlled charge accumulation in otherwise straight channels. Combining lattice-Boltzmann simulations with analytical modeling, we show that the stability and mobility of these charge clouds result from a balance between electrostatic forces, hydrodynamic drag, and diffusion. Under applied electric fields and pressure gradients, localized charge produces diode-like rectification. Pressure-driven flow shifts

Halide Electrolyte Effects in the Electrochemical Hydrogenation of Ketones on Copper.

Electrochemical hydrogenation of biomass-derived ketones offers a sustainable route to value-added chemicals but is often limited by competition from the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Here, we investigate how electrolyte composition, and specifically halide identity, governs the selective electrochemical hydrogenation of acetophenone to 1-phenylethanol on copper electrodes under near-neutral aqueous conditions. Potassium halide electrolytes introduce specific halide-surface interactions that modulate hydrogen adsorption, delay HER onset, and influence organic reduction behavior. Among the…

Electrolyte Concentration in Urine and Urinary Infection-Is There Any Relation?

BACKGROUND: Sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium, and magnesium in urine are useful biomarkers and are commonly evaluated in patients with different conditions. Urinary tract infections are among the most common diseases worldwide. However, their treatment poses significant challenges, particularly in hospitals, primarily due to antibiotic resistance and recurrence. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the relationship between ion concentrations in urine and the presence of infection. METHODS: A total of 175 random urine samples were collected from patients who had a request for urine culture at the Cova

Tocilizumab and electrolyte imbalance: severe hypokalaemia leading to paralysis.

Tocilizumab, an interleukin-6 (IL-6) receptor antagonist, is widely used for inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and adult-onset Still's disease (AOSD). While its known side effects include hypersensitivity, neutropenia and liver dysfunction, hypokalaemia is a rare adverse effect. We report a male patient in his early 30s with AOSD who developed severe hypokalaemia (2.0 mmol/L) and acute flaccid paralysis after his third intravenous tocilizumab infusion. He had no prior neurological or electrolyte disturbances. Electrocardiography showed U waves and mild QT prolongation, while b

Renal and electrolyte complications in eating disorders: a comprehensive review.

Eating disorders are psychiatric disorders with significant and widespread medical complications, including renal disorders. Renal disease is not uncommon in patients with eating disorders but is often unrecognized. It includes both acute renal injury and progression to chronic kidney disease requiring dialysis. Electrolyte abnormalities including hyponatremia, hypokalemia, and metabolic alkalosis are common in eating disorders and vary depending on whether patients engage in purging behaviors. Chronic hypokalemia due to purging in patients with anorexia nervosa-binge purge subtype or bulimia

Acute kidney injury and electrolyte disorders in COVID-19.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) and electrolyte disorders are important complications of hospitalized coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients. AKI is thought to occur due to multiple pathophysiological mechanisms, such as multiple organ dysfunction (mainly cardiac and respiratory), direct viral entry in the renal tubules, and cytokine release syndrome. AKI is present in approximately one in every ten hospitalized COVID-19 patients. The incidence rates of AKI increase in patients who are admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU), with levels higher than 50%. Additionally, renal replacement thera

Common Electrolyte and Metabolic Abnormalities Among Thyroid Patients.

The prevalence of thyroid diseases is high in the general population and causes serious abnormalities and disorders that can affect the quality of life. Many complications can result from poor or inappropriate management of the disease, leading to serious cardiovascular and metabolic complications. In the present review study, we aim to discuss the effect of thyroid diseases on metabolic and electrolyte abnormalities and the potential correlation with some common disorders. Evidence from previous studies has demonstrated that thyroid dysfunctions hugely affect the metabolism of glucose in the

Fluid-electrolyte homeostasis requires histone deacetylase function.

Histone deacetylase (HDAC) enzymes regulate transcription through epigenetic modification of chromatin structure, but their specific functions in the kidney remain elusive. We discovered that the human kidney expresses class I HDACs. Kidney medulla-specific inhibition of class I HDACs in the rat during high-salt feeding results in hypertension, polyuria, hypokalemia, and nitric oxide deficiency. Three new inducible murine models were used to determine that HDAC1 and HDAC2 in the kidney epithelium are necessary for maintaining epithelial integrity and maintaining fluid-electrolyte balance durin

Electrolyte and acid-base abnormalities associated with purging behaviors.

OBJECTIVE: Eating disorders that are associated with purging behaviors are complicated by frequent blood electrolyte and acid-base abnormalities. Herein, we review the major electrolyte and acid-base abnormalities and their treatment methods. The body of rigorous, eating disorder-specific literature on this topical area is not robust enough to perform a systematic review as defined by PRISMA guidelines. Therefore, a qualitative review of mostly medical literature was conducted. RESULTS: Hypokalemia, hyponatremia, and sodium chloride-responsive metabolic alkalosis are the most common serum cha
