The estimation of multijoint angles is of great significance in the fields of lower limb rehabilitation, motion control, and exoskeleton robotics. Accurate joint angle estimation helps assess joint function, assist in rehabilitation training, and optimize robotic control strategies. However, estimating multijoint angles in different movement patterns, such as walking, obstacle crossing, squatting, and knee flexion-extension, using surface electromyography (sEMG) signals remains a challenge. In this study, a model is proposed for the continuous motion estimation of multijoint angles in the lowe…

Advancements in human-machine interfaces (HMIs) are pivotal for enhancing rehabilitation technologies and improving the quality of life for individuals with limb loss. This paper presents a novel CNN-Transformer model for decoding continuous fine finger motions from surface electromyography (sEMG) signals by integrating the convolutional neural network (CNN) and Transformer architecture, focusing on applications for transradial amputees. This model leverages the strengths of both convolutional and Transformer architectures to effectively capture both local muscle activation patterns and global…

Swallowing, and dysphagia, the pathophysiology of swallowing, differ from most motor activities in that they are not readily observable without invasive imaging or measurement. Successful swallowing depends more on the precision of control and coordination with respiration than it does on force or work generation, which differs from many other motor tasks. Electromyography (EMG), an essential method for investigating motor function in general, has become critical to understanding the physiology of swallowing. In 1956, Doty and Bosma published a landmark paper using EMG to describe the motor pa…

Though the forearm is the focus of the prostheses, myoelectric control with the electrodes on the wrist is more comfortable for general consumers because of its unobtrusiveness and incorporation with the existing wrist-based wearables. Recently, deep learning methods have gained attention for myoelectric control but their performance is unclear on wrist myoelectric signals. This study compared the gesture recognition performance of myoelectric signals from the wrist and forearm between a state-of-the-art method, TDLDA, and four deep learning models, including convolutional neural network (CNN)

BACKGROUND: Rating scales and linear indices of surface electromyography (sEMG) cannot quantify all neuromuscular conditions associated with ankle-foot dysfunction in hemiplegic patients. This study aimed to reveal potential neuromuscular conditions of ankle-foot dysfunction in hemiplegic patients by nonlinear network indices of sEMG.
METHODS: Fourteen male patients with hemiplegia and 10 age- and sex-matched healthy male adults were recruited and tested in static standing position. The characteristics of the root mean square (RMS), median frequency (MF), and three nonlinear indices, the clus…

In order to use the surface EMG signal to automatically detect the muscle fatigue state, a research method of the muscle exercise fatigue intelligent scanning detection system based on surface EMG was proposed, and the sEMG signal features of 10 subjects before and after fatigue were extracted. A time-varying parameter autoregressive model is established. By introducing the Legendre basis function, the parameter identification of the linear nonstationary process is transformed into the parameter identification of the linear time-invariant system. Combined with the correlation index, the optima

BACKGROUND: The time interval between two potential components of the same motor unit potential (MUP) is measured for jitter analysis. Enhanced jitter is generally thought to result from impaired neuromuscular transmission as occurs in myasthenia gravis or during reinnervation.
METHODS: Within a database of conventional video-electromyography (EMG) recordings 4 MUP with peculiar jitter patterns were identified. In 1 spontaneously discharging MUP, massive and chaotic jitter was seen with a mean consecutive difference (MCD) of 9.3 ms. In 2 spontaneously discharging MUP a certain potential subgr…

BACKGROUND: The increasing demand for rotator cuff (RC) repair patients to return to work as soon as they are physically able has led to exploration of when this is feasible. Current guidelines from our orthopedic surgery clinic recommend a return to work at 9 weeks postoperation. To more fully define capacity to return to work, the current study was conducted using a unique series of quantitative tools. To date, no study has combined 3-dimensional (3D) motion analysis with electromyography (EMG) assessment during activities of daily living (ADLs), including desk tasks, and commonly prescribed…

We examined the limb kinematics and motor patterns that underlie sensory-evoked turning locomotion in red-eared turtles. Intact animals were held by a band-clamp in a water-filled tank. Turn-swimming was evoked by slowly rotating turtles to the right or left via a motor connected to the shaft of the band-clamp. Animals executed sustained forward turn-swimming against the direction of the imposed rotation. We recorded video of turn-swimming and computer-analyzed the limb and head movements. In a subset of turtles, we also recorded electromyograms from identified limb muscles. Turning exhibited

We investigated 63 patients with detrusor areflexia by cystometrography, perineal floor electromyography and bethanechol chloride supersensitivity testing. Of the patients 48 had unequivocal evidence of neuropathy, while 15 were neurologically normal and served as controls. The bethanechol chloride supersensitivity test was positive in 98 per cent of the patients and none of the controls, whereas neuropathic changes by electromyography were found in 67 per cent of the patients and 7 per cent of the controls. These findings suggest that the bethanechol chloride supersensitivity test is more sen…

BACKGROUND: Masticatory myofascial pain syndrome (MMPS) is characterized by the presence of trigger points (TrPs) in the masticatory musculature. Percutaneous needle electrolysis (PNE) is a minimally invasive technique with proven efficacy in tendinopathies, although its application in the temporomandibular region is limited. The objective was to evaluate the clinical effectiveness of a single session of electromyography (EMG)-guided PNE on pain, function, and mandibular mobility in patients with MMPS.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective clinical study was designed involving 26 patients diag…

Hemifacial spasm (HFS) is a refractory neuromuscular disorder that primarily affects facial movement. Electromyography (EMG) is one common-used clinical evaluation technique for HFS, which can help support the effective treatment. Nonetheless, due to its invasiveness and low-resolution issues, the application of EMG is limited. This study aimed to evaluate the facial muscle activities in HFS, by employing a whole-face surface EMG (sEMG) technique. Twenty patients with HFS were recruited in this study. Whole-face sEMG electrodes were used to record the muscle activities of the frontalis, orbicu…

BACKGROUND: Myofascial trigger points (MTrPs), which arise from muscle overload and subsequent ischemia, contribute to myofascial pain syndrome (MPS). Despite the high prevalence of MPS, diagnosis remains challenging. There is a lack of objective methods for identifying MTrPs using high-density surface electromyography (HD-sEMG), particularly through analysis of EMG activity and decomposed motor unit (MU) characteristics between active and non-MTrPs.
METHODS: EMG and MU activities were compared between active MTrPs (n = 15) and non-MTrPs (n = 22) in the upper and middle trapezius. MU activiti…
