BACKGROUND: Exposure to the herbicide glyphosate may contribute to anxiety-related disorders. The mechanisms by which this occurs may involve effects on brain regions or alterations of gut microbiota implicated in emotions. Pre-clinical studies use unusually high doses to which humans may not normally be exposed. The effects of glyphosate on anxiety at doses considered safe are largely unexplored.
METHODS: Adult male rats were administered glyphosate at a dose considered safe for 16 weeks. After 4 and 10 weeks, anxiety-like behaviors were tested in the open field and elevated plus maze, respe

Estrogens are potent regulators of socioemotional behavior across species. Ubiquitous in human and animal diets, plant-derived phytoestrogens (PE) bind estrogen receptors. While prior work has examined the impact of PE exposure on socioemotional behavior, findings are inconsistent across studies. To investigate whether the timing of PE diet initiation may govern differential behavioral effects, we compared the impacts of PE-free (<20 mg/kg) versus PE-rich (810 mg/kg) diet exposure across the lifetime versus acutely in adulthood. Reproductive physiology was assessed through age at puberty onset

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety disorder that occurs following exposure to somatic or psychotic trauma. Physical activity is known to improve symptoms of certain neuropsychiatric disorders. However, the role of exercise on acquired PTSD-like phenotype was not examined. The present study investigated the effects of prior moderate treadmill exercise on anxiety-like behaviors, serum corticosterone and BDNF levels, hippocampal BDNF and mRNA expression of apoptotic - related proteins in the single prolonged stress (SPS) as an animal model of PTSD in rats. Male and female rats und

Mephedrone and methedrone are cathinone-related compounds, which act as non-selective substrates for monoamine transporters, facilitating a neurotransmitter release. We compared the acute pharmacological effects of mephedrone and methedrone, attempting to further evaluate the action mechanisms of methedrone by responsibly and ethically using mice under approved procedures. The effects of both compounds were examined from 10 to 60 min, in a series of behavioral paradigms, namely open-field, plus-maze, hot-plate and tail suspension tests, whereas neurotransmitter brain tissue levels were determi

The post-weaning social environment has profound effects on behavior and physiology in rodents. Social isolation increases anxiety-like behaviors and novelty-induced locomotor activity, while environmental enrichment decreases these behaviors. In some cases, the effects of social isolation are ameliorated by repeated handling. The goal of the present study was to determine whether the effects of handling differ in rats reared in social isolation and those reared in an enriched environment. After weaning, male Long-Evans rats were housed individually (ISO)(3) or in groups in an enriched environ

BACKGROUND: Hospitalized preterm infants may experience pain and stress, and narcotics are often administered to lessen their suffering. However, prolonged narcotic therapy may be detrimental during neonatal brain development. Using a rat model combining neonatal stress and morphine, we found that neonatal morphine impaired adult learning. Here we describe a new mouse model examining lasting effects of neonatal stress and morphine.
OBJECTIVE: We tested whether repeated neonatal stress and/or morphine exposure affects early neurodevelopmental or adult behaviors.
METHODS: Five groups of C57/BL

BACKGROUND: Environmental exposure to heavy metals such as lead (Pb), arsenic (As), hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)], and cadmium (Cd), (PACC), is linked to neurodevelopmental disorders. These metals often co-occur in contaminated environments, but their combined effects on brain development remain poorly understood.
OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that perinatal exposure to a mixture of environmentally relevant levels of Pb, As, Cd, and Cr(VI), causes developmental defects in cognition, behavior, and neuronal function.
METHODS: Female C57BL/6J mice were exposed to either a single metal or the

BACKGROUND: Sepsis is a common systemic inflammatory disease clinically observed in patients with severe trauma or infectious diseases. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) serves as a classic tool for studying infection-related neuroinflammation and behavioral changes. Research indicates that LPS can induce peripheral inflammation and neuroinflammation, leading to synaptic dysfunction and neurobehavioral abnormalities. Furthermore, studies suggest that stress can increase susceptibility to inflammation. Intermittent hypoxia, a core pathological feature of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, induces low-gra

Chronic stress (Ch.S) has detrimental effects on the brain's structure and function, particularly in the hippocampus. The noradrenergic and orexinergic systems play crucial roles in the stress response and regulation of stress-related behaviors. This study aimed to investigate the interaction between noradrenergic activation and orexin receptor 1 inhibition on chronic stress-induced hippocampal alterations. The study conducted experiments on male Wistar rats, subjected to Ch.S, OXr1 blocking, noradrenergic activation, or a combination of these treatments. Plasma corticosterone level was measur

The research was conducted to examine the neuroprotective effect of thymol and its precursor p-cymene on chronic immobility stress in adult … h in the CA1 region of stressed animals and improved their performance in the Morris water maze and elevated plus maze tests. Based on these findings, thymol and p-cymene may be effective in preventing neurodegenerative diseases as they reduce oxidative stress and neuroinflammation, strengthen ACh signaling, and stimulate Bdnf expression.

A high proportion of young methamphetamine (MA) users simultaneously consume alcohol. However, the potential neurological and behavioural alterations induced by such a drug combination have not been systematically examined. We studied in adolescent rats the long-term effects of alcohol, MA, and alcohol and MA combined on anxiety-like behaviour, memory, and neurogenesis in the adult hippocampus. Rats received saline, ethanol (ETOH, 1.5g/kg), MA (MA, 2mg/kg), or ethanol and MA combined (ETHOH-MA, 1.5g/kg ethanol plus 2mg/kg MA) via oral gavage, once daily for 5 consecutive days. This study investigated the effects of Dysosmobacter welbionis J115T on stress- and anxiety-related behaviours, inflammation, and neurobiological markers under different dietary conditions in female mice. Daily oral gavage with D. welbionis J115T for six weeks did not significantly impact body weight or fat mass, regardless of dietary treatment. Notably, high-fat diet (HFD)-fed female mice displayed increased body weight and adipose tissue accumulation compared to control diet (CTD) counterparts; however, this was not significantly altered by D. welbionis J115T administration. Behavioural test

Stress disturbs the balance of the gut microbiota and stimulates inflammation-to-brain mechanisms. Moreover, stress leads to anxiety and depressive disorders. Bifidobacterium adolescentis displays distinct anti-inflammatory effects. However, no report has focused on the anxiolytic and antidepressant effects of B. adolescentis related to the gut microbiome and the inflammation on chronic restraint stress (CRS) in mice. We found that pretreatment with B. adolescentis increased the time spent in the center of the open field apparatus, increased the percentage of entries into the open arms of the

Individuals are increasingly exposed to light at night. Exposure to constant light (LL) disrupts circadian rhythms of locomotor activity, body temperature, hormones, and the sleep-wake cycle in animals. Other behavioural responses to LL have been reported, but are inconsistent. The present experiment sought to determine whether LL produces changes in affective responses and whether behavioural changes are mediated by alterations in glucocorticoid concentrations. Relative to conspecifics maintained in a light/dark cycle (LD, 16:8 light/dark), male Swiss-Webster mice exposed to LL for three week
