Defying Dietary Homogeneity: Stable Isotopes in Hair Reveal Persistent Geographic Heterogeneity in Argentina's Modern Diet.

OBJECTIVES: The main objective of the study is to characterize and test the hypothesis of a continuing trend toward homogenization in contemporary Argentine diet through stable isotope analysis, exploring regional variation in the context of globalized food systems. It is expected that the distribution of stable isotopes will exhibit a limited range of values but still display some heterogeneity that allows differentiation of dietary patterns by region. METHODS: A total of 204 hair samples were collected from volunteer donors in Argentina and analyzed for the stable isotopes δ13C, δ15N, and δ

Celiac Disease-Narrative Review on Progress in Celiac Disease.

Celiac disease is defined as a systemic immunological disorder caused by gluten (gliadin and other prolamin) in genetically predisposed individuals, who present with a variety of gluten-dependent symptoms, specific antibodies, the presence of the HLA DQ2 and DQ8 histocompatibility antigen, and enteropathy. Its prevalence, depending on the studied population and methodology, is estimated at 0.75-1.6% of the general population. During the complex immune reaction it induces, most cells involved in inflammatory processes are activated, which leads to the gradual atrophy of intestinal villi and the

Does chronic dietary exposure to the mycotoxin deoxynivalenol affect the porcine hepatic transcriptome when an acute-phase response is initiated through first or second-pass LPS challenge of the liver?

The sensitivity of pigs to deoxynivalenol (DON) might be increased by systemic inflammation (SI), which also has consequences for hepatic integrity. Liver lesions and a dys-regulated gene network might hamper hepatic handling and elimination of DON whereby the way of initiation of hepatic inflammation might play an additional role. First and second-pass exposure of the liver with LPS for triggering a SI was achieved by LPS infusion via pre- or post-hepatic venous route, respectively. Each infusion group was pre-conditioned either with a control diet (0.12 mg DON/kg diet) or with a DON-contamin

Increase of Human Milk Fat Inducing Nutritional Ketosis in Exclusively Breastfed Infant, Brought About by Treating the Mother With Ketogenic Dietary Therapy.

INTRODUCTION: Medicalized Ketogenic Therapy is commonly used to treat refractory epilepsy. Patients have varying degrees of seizure or symptom relief, responding at individual levels of ketone production. Typically, initiating the therapy necessitates the discontinuation of breastfeeding. Our case study mother was keen to continue breastfeeding if possible. We were able to achieve this by placing the healthy mother on a ketogenic diet and altering the composition of the mother's own milk. MAIN LACTATION ISSUE: Pediatric Medicalized Ketogenic Therapy is delivered through a ketogenic diet consi

[Anemia: Diagnostics and Therapy].

The most common cause of anemia is iron deficiency, followed by anemia of chronic disease, which is due to an inflammatory reaction in chronic diseases such as heart failure, renal failure, rheumatoid diseases and cancer. Also from the therapeutic point of view, it is useful to divide iron deficiency anemia into two forms: absolute and functional iron deficiency. Absolute iron deficiency is characterized by low iron stores and low total iron. In functional iron deficiency, a sufficient amount of storage iron is present, but it cannot be mobilized. Therapy of iron deficient anemia should always

Immunogenetic, Molecular and Microbiotic Determinants of Eosinophilic Esophagitis and Clinical Practice-A New Perspective of an Old Disease.

Eosinophilic oesophagitis (EoE) is a chronic, allergic disease associated with a T-lymphocyte response inducing esophageal eosinophilic infiltration in the esophagus. Inflammation and tissue fibrosis are responsible for the main clinical symptoms such as food impaction and dysphagia. The etiopathogenesis is multifactorial in which genetic and environmental factors coexist. The most common trigger is a non-IgE-mediated food allergy to milk, wheat, egg, soybean, nuts, fish, and seafood. The second factor we focus on is the contribution of genetic variation to the risk of EoE, describing the expr

Possible galactosaemia in an Ethiopian: case report.

Galactosaemia should be considered in any infant who presents with cholestatic jaundice in early infancy, particularly in the face of previous neonatal deaths. Newborn screening programmes would have been ideal in early detection of the cases. The clinical manifestation, the urine test for reducing sugars and the amelioration of clinical features after 'milk-withdrawal' are quite indicative of the disease in centres where enzyme assays cannot be performed. Elimination of milk and milk products as well as other lactose containing sources from diet, secures an excellent outcome, provided that it

Simple chronic constipation: pathophysiology and management.

Chronic constipation is not a simple problem. It is often related to fundamental beliefs and habits. Once it has been established that the cause is not an organic disorder, the physician must take pains to explore with the patient other possible causes. Simple, inorganic constipation can usually be traced to poor diet or poor habits. The physician should provide simple explanations of the mechanisms involved in the act of elimination and detailed instructions on appropriate food and water intake and the development of regular habits. Laxatives should be prescribed only if absolutely necessary

[Efficiency of vitamin D deficit correction depending on rats' supply with B vitamins].

Despite the presence of combined deficiency of vitamins D and group B among the population of Russia, the intake of cholecalciferol is often recommended without correcting the supply with B group vitamins, which are involved in ensuring the biological functions of vitamin D. The aim of the study was to compare the effectiveness of vitamin D deficit correction by replenishing its content in the diet to an adequate level without eliminating the deficit of B vitamins and by restoring vitamin D level in combination with B vitamins. Material and methods. The experiment was carried out on male Wista

Is psoriasis a bowel disease? Successful treatment with bile acids and bioflavonoids suggests it is.

The gut is the largest lymphoid organ in the body. The human microbiome is composed of trillions of bacteria. The DNA of these bacteria dwarfs the human genome. Diet and ethanol can cause rapid shifts in the number and types of bacteria in the gut. The psoriatic microbiome is similar to that seen in alcoholics; there is a decrease in bacterial diversity and overgrowth of bacteria in the small bowel. Psoriatics often have liver disease and deficiencies in bile acids. Psoriasis is a disease characterized by a leaky gut. All of the comorbidities of this disease are due to systemic endotoxemia. Ba

Advances in the diagnosis and therapy of syncope and palpitations in children.

Although advances in diagnosis and therapy of congenital heart disease have received most of the attention, in the past few years advances in the more common troublesome problems of adolescents with syncope and palpitations have been as dramatic. Syncope may be due to a cardiac arrhythmia, but is more commonly due to an autonomic dysfunction of blood pressure control. In cases where the diagnosis is equivocal by history alone, autonomic testing, including head-up tilt table testing, may be useful. Treatment with a salt-enriched diet and a mineralocorticoid is usually effective in reducing or e

The Influence of Nutritional Intervention in the Treatment of Hashimoto's Thyroiditis-A Systematic Review.

Diet can be a complementary treatment for Hashimoto's disease by affecting thyroid function and anti-inflammatory properties. It is still unclear which dietary strategy would be the most beneficial. The aim of this systematic review is to examine all the data currently available in the literature on the effects of nutritional intervention on biochemical parameters (anti-thyroid antibody and thyroid hormones levels) and characteristic symptoms in the course of Hashimoto's thyroiditis. This systematic review was prepared based on PRISMA guidelines. Articles in PubMed and Scopus databases publish

Eosinophilic esophagitis: short and long-term considerations.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is a relatively new disease but its understanding is evolving over a period of time. This review highlights recent advances in the understanding of pathophysiology, diagnostic modalities, short and long-term goals of therapy and novel therapeutic agents. RECENT FINDINGS: The prevalence of EoE is increasing. Upper endoscopy and biopsy remains the gold standard for diagnosing EoE but less invasive and more cost-effective testing has been under investigation. Scoring systems to assess symptoms, histology and endoscopic findings can distinguish be

Use of noninsulin antidiabetic medications in hospitalized patients.

Noninsulin antidiabetic medications coupled with diet and exercise are effective in managing most patients with type 2 diabetes. However, it is essential to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the home antidiabetic medication regimen when the patient is hospitalized. Prescribers need to be aware of the mechanism of action of each class, contraindications, precautions, and adverse effects to formulate a safe and effective management plan. This article details the different classes of noninsulin antidiabetic medications, the mechanism of action, metabolism, elimination, dose form, usual and

Behavioural and physiological effects of virginiamycin in the diets of horses with stereotypies.

The effects of dietary supplements of virginiamycin on the behaviour and physiology of 17 thoroughbred geldings (five cribbers, six weavers and six control horses) were compared with the effects of a placebo over a period of 16 weeks. Virginiamycin had no effect on the horses' stereotypic behaviour, but it reduced their explorative behaviour, possibly owing to a reduction in feeding motivation. Virginiamycin increased the water intake of the cribbers and decreased the water intake of the control horses, but it was not possible to eliminate possible confounding factors for this effect. [Digestive intolerance to cow's milk proteins in infants. Clinical study of 42 cases].

The criteria chosen for the diagnosis of gastro-intestinal intolerance to cow milk proteins were the following: occurrence of shock or anaphylaxis, reccurrence of gastro-intestinal symptoms as a consequence of repeated trials of reintroduction of cow milk proteins into the diet. Under these conditions the transient forms, including the secondary forms, of intolerance to cow milk, were eliminated. This diagnostic attitude may explain the early appearance of gastro-intestinal disturbances, the higher frequency in infancy than in childhood of the severe forms, characterized by shock, subacute mal

An update on the diagnosis and management of non-IgE-mediated food allergies in children.

The spectrum of non-IgE mediated conditions includes well-defined conditions like Food Protein-Induced Enterocolitis Syndrome (FPIES), Eosinophilic Oesophagitis (EoE), Food Protein-Induced Enteropathy, and Food Protein-Induced Allergic Proctocolitis, but also the more controversial food protein-induced dysmotility disorders like food protein-induced gastroesophageal reflux disease (FPGORD) and food protein-induced constipation (FPC). Typically, non-IgE mediated reactions are delayed, with symptom onset from hours to days after exposure to a culprit food. The diagnosis is mostly clinical, and f
