The stapedial artery (SA) is an embryonic vessel connecting the internal carotid artery (ICA) to the branches of the future external carotid artery (ECA). It passes through the primordium of the stapes that progressively develops around the SA. Normally, SA disappears during the tenth week in utero. Approximately 0.4% of the population can have a persistent SA. It can persist as four types of embryological variations, of which the pharyngo-hyo-stapedial variant has been rarely described before. We reported a case of a 61-year-old woman presented with transient ischemic attacks (TIAs). Computed

In this study, we used 45 adult cadaveric cerebral hemispheres to investigate the anatomical classification of the superficial middle cerebral vein (SMCV) based on the number of stems, course, and anastomosis at the distal portion. We classified the SMCVs into five types based on embryological concept. Type A (18 cases, 40.0%) is that the frontosylvian veins (FSVs) merge with the vein of Trolard (VT) and the vein of Labbé (VL) at the distal portion of the sylvian fissure. Type B (5 cases, 11.1%) is that the temporosylvian veins (TSVs) merge with the VT and the VL at the distal portion. Type C

Lumbosacral transitional vertebrae (LSTV) are congenital anomalies of the lumbosacral spine. In lumbosacral transitional vertebrae either sacralization of the lowest lumbar segment or lumbarization of the upper sacral segment of the spine is seen. One of the sacra from macerated cadavers has shown sacralization with unilateral fusion of transverse process on right side, while on left side it was normal, there was no fusion of bodies and left transverse processes of lumbosacral transitional vertebrae and first sacral vertebrae. Since there is association between lumbosacral transitional vertebr

Developing rapidly from the cecal diverticulum in a 5-week-old embryo, the cecum, which is developed from the caudal limb of the midgut loop, is different from the ascending colon. The aim of this study was to analyze the different clinicopathological and biological characteristics of patients with carcinoma of the cecum and ascending colon. We accessed data for 59,035 patients with adenocarcinomas of the cecum and ascending colon from the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results database to explore the potential associations between the clinicopathological characteristics and overall surviv

OBJECTIVE: Previously, a new embryological classification was introduced subdividing oral clefts into fusion and/or differentiation defects. This subdivision was used to classify all subphenotypes of cleft lip with or without alveolus (CL±A). Subsequently, it was investigated whether further morphological grading of incomplete CLs is clinically relevant, and which alveolar part is deficient in fusion/differentiation defects.
DESIGN: Observational cohort study.
SETTING: Three hundred fifty adult unoperated Indonesian cleft patients presented themselves for operation. Cephalograms, dental cast

INTRODUCTION: Re-ascended testes account for a proportion of all undescended testes (UDTs); one main hypothesis relating to their etiology relates to a patent processus vaginalis peritonei. The aim was to investigate gubernacular insertion points in boys with late ascended testis as a possible guide to an alternative embryological etiology.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients with proven ascended testes were recruited from four different pediatric urology centers between May 2016 and September 2017. All patients were evaluated regarding their gubernacular insertion during orchidopexy. The presence

PURPOSE: Recently, the radiological concept of retroperitoneal interfascial planes has been widely accepted to explain the extension of retroperitoneal pathologies. This study aimed to explore embryologically based corroborative evidence, which remains to be elucidated, for this concept.
METHODS: Using serial or semi-serial transverse sections from 29 human fetuses at the 5th-25th week of fetal age, we microscopically observed the development of the retroperitoneal fasciae and other structures in the retroperitoneal connective tissue. A hypothesis for the formation of the interfascial planes

The knowledge of variations in the large intestine and liver is of clinical importance from the anatomical and embryological points of view. Different positions of the hepatic flexure of large intestine, although generally asymptomatic, may have different impact on manifestations of disease. During routine cadaveric study of the abdominal region we observed a case where the hepatic flexure was interposed between the right dome of the diaphragm and the anterior surface of the liver. The liver appeared bilobulated and on the anterior surface the right and left hepatic lobes were separated by a d

Thoracic aortic aneurysm (TAA) is a clinically silent and potentially fatal disease whose pathophysiology is poorly understood. Application of data derived from animal models and human tissue analysis of abdominal aortic aneurysms may prove misleading given current evidence of structural and biochemical aortic heterogeneity above and below the diaphragm. Genetic predisposition is more common in TAA and includes multi-faceted syndromes such as Marfan, Loeys-Dietz, and type IV Ehlers-Danlos as well as autosomal-dominant familial patterns of inheritance. Investigation into the consequences of the

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Optimal management of vocal fold paralysis would entail recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) reinnervation resulting in normal vocal fold motion. Unfortunately, RLN reinnervation currently results in a nonfunctional vocal fold due to synkinetic reinnervation. Therapeutic interventions that guide regenerating axons back to the appropriate muscle would prevent synkinesis and restore vocal fold and glottal function. The initial step toward developing these therapies is the elucidation of the embryologic innervation of the larynx. This study aimed to identify the age of occurrenc

BACKGROUND: The Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome is present in at least 1 out of 4,500 female live births and is the second most common cause for primary amenorrhea. It is characterized by vaginal and uterine aplasia in an XX individual with normal secondary characteristics. It has long been considered a sporadic anomaly, but familial clustering occurs. Several candidate genes have been studied although no single factor has yet been identified. Cases of discordant monozygotic twins suggest that the involvement of epigenetic factors is more likely.
METHODS: Differences in gene ex

Congenital quadricuspid aortic valves (QAVs) are rare phenomena. They are often associated with aortic insufficiency and significant morbidity. A QAV with an associated ascending aortic aneurysm is extremely rare, and these conditions might have a shared embryonic etiology. We describe the case of a patient with a QAV associated with aortic aneurysm. Pertinent literature on the QAV is reviewed, and embryological factors that may contribute to its pathogenesis are discussed.

Gene targeting studies have indicated that the two receptors for PDGF, alpha and beta, direct unique functions during development. Distinct ligand affinities, patterns of gene expression, and/or mechanisms of signal relay may account for functional specificity of the two PDGF receptor isoforms. To distinguish between these factors, we have created two complementary lines of knockin mice in which the intracellular signaling domains of one PDGFR have been removed and replaced by those of the other PDGFR. While both lines demonstrated substantial rescue of normal development, substitution of the

The junction between the main pancreatic duct and the accessory duct has been thought to be the site of fusion between the ducts of the ventral and the dorsal primordia of the pancreas. The aim of this study was to investigate the fusion point between the ventral and the dorsal pancreatic ducts and to determine whether there is any relationship between the configuration of the pancreatic ducts and the manner of embryological fusion. Pancreatography was performed at 22 consecutive autopsies. Immunohistochemical staining of pancreatic polypeptide (PP) was performed because PP cells were rich in

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to clarify the embryologic features of CL/Fr mice in relation to cyanosis.
METHOD: Orofacial examinations were conducted on 18-day-old term fetuses and newborns. Except for open eyelids in a few cases, all of the external abnormalities in this strain were cleft lip and/or palate (CLP).
RESULTS: The CLP incidence in term fetuses was 28.4%. The body and placental weights were not different between CLP(+) and CLP(-) fetuses. Several types of CLP were found; the most frequent was bilateral complete CLP (60%) followed by left complete (16%). Bilateral co

The term 'double-outlet left ventricle' (DOLV) denotes congenital heart malformations in which the aorta and the pulmonary trunk both arise entirely or predominantly above the morphologically left ventricle. In the past, the formal pathogenesis of DOLV was explained by an abnormal topogenesis of the origin of the great arteries, which could be caused by an excessive leftward shift of the embryonic conotruncus, or by errors in differential conal growth or absorption. However, modern embryological and pathological research is casting doubt on the validity of these concepts. In the present paper

Congenital seminal vesicle cysts represent a rare but illustrative type of embryological malformation. They often are combined with ipsilateral upper urinary tract abnormalities. In most of the cases described in the literature the diagnosis has been made with rather invasive procedures. On the basis of our experience with 3 cases we recommend pelvic ultrasonography as the initial study in patients in whom such a malformation is suspected. Although other radiological procedures may be required to confirm the diagnosis, this approach appears to be cost-effective and accurate in most instances.
