Effect of a community-based nursing intervention on mortality in chronically ill older adults: a randomized controlled trial.

BackgroundImproving the health of chronically ill older adults is a major challenge facing modern health care systems. A community-based nursing intervention developed by Health Quality Partners (HQP) was one of 15 different models of care coordination tested in randomized controlled trials within the Medicare Coordinated Care Demonstration (MCCD), a national US study. Evaluation of the HQP program began in 2002. The study reported here was designed to evaluate the survival impact of the HQP program versus usual care up to five years post-enrollment.Methods and findingsHQP enrolled 1,736 adult

Variability in Healthcare Expenditure According to the Stratification of Adjusted Morbidity Groups in the Canary Islands (Spain).

Morbidity is the main item in the distribution of expenditure on healthcare services. The Adjusted Morbidity Group (AMG) measures comorbidity and complexity and classifies the patient into mutually exclusive clinical categories. The aim of this study is to analyse the variability of healthcare expenditure on users with similar scores classified by the AMG. Observational analytical and retrospective study. Population: 1,691,075 subjects, from Canary Islands (Spain), aged over 15 years with data from health cards, clinical history, Basic Minimum Specialised Healthcare Data Set, AMG, hospital agr

Abstract Objectives The purpose of this study is to examine the existing literature on end-of-life dream experiences and bucket list fulfillments among terminally ill individuals receiving hospice and/or palliative care. Methods A scoping review registered on Open Science Framework was conducted in accordance with the guidelines for Scoping reviews (PRISMA-ScR). An electronic search of literature was generated from EBSCO databases published until June 2024. Studies were included if they described and evaluated the effects of bucket lists and/or end-of-life wish fulfillment. Results This review

The state of the science of interprofessional collaborative practice: A scoping review of the patient health-related outcomes based literature published between 2010 and 2018.

IntroductionIf interprofessional collaborative practice is to be an important component of healthcare reform, then an evidentiary base connecting interprofessional education to interprofessional practice with significantly improved health and healthcare outcomes is an unconditional necessity. This study is a scoping review of the current peer reviewed literature linking interprofessional collaborative care and interprofessional collaborative practice to clearly identified healthcare and/or patient health-related outcomes. The research question for this review was: What does the evidence from t

Integrating Palliative Care into Oncology Care Worldwide: The Right Care in the Right Place at the Right Time.

Opinion statementWhile the benefits of early palliative care are indisputable, most of the current evidence has emerged from resource-rich settings in urban areas of high-income countries, with an emphasis on solid tumors in outpatient settings; this model of palliative care integration is not currently scalable internationally. A shortage of specialist palliative care clinicians means that in order to meet the needs of all patients who require support at any point along their advanced cancer trajectory, palliative care must also be provided by family physicians and oncology clinicians who req

Barriers to the Provision and Utilization of Palliative Care in Africa: A Rapid Scoping Review.

Palliative care (PC) has continued to be less available, underutilized, and unintegrated in many of the healthcare systems, especially in Africa. This scoping review synthesized existing published papers on adult PC in Africa, to report the barriers to PC and to assess the methodologies used in these studies. Eight electronic databases and Google Scholar were searched to identify relevant studies published between 2005 and 2018. Overall, 42 publications (34 empirical studies and 9 reviews) that reported issues related to barriers to adult PC were selected. Three themes identified were individu

Barriers to Recruitment and Retention Among Underrepresented Populations in Cancer Clinical Trials: A Qualitative Study of the Perspectives of Clinical Trial Research Coordinating Staff at a Cancer Center.

BackgroundAlthough US research agencies have instituted peer review processes to require participant diversity in clinical trials before funding decisions are made, the underrepresentation of certain populations (eg, racial and ethnic minorities) in clinical trials remains a persistent challenge in biomedical research. This issue has the potential to affect the generalizability of findings and impede efforts to ensure the provision of high-quality healthcare across all populations. In this study, we examined barriers to the recruitment and retention of underrepresented populations in cancer cl

Effect of a Mobile App for the Pharmacotherapeutic Follow-Up of Patients With Cancer on Their Health Outcomes: Quasi-Experimental Study.

BackgroundOral antineoplastic agents (OAAs) have revolutionized cancer management. However, they have been reported with adverse side effects and drug-drug interactions. Moreover, patient adherence to OAA treatment is critical. Mobile apps can enable remote and real-time pharmacotherapeutic monitoring of patients, while also promoting patient autonomy in their health care.ObjectiveThe primary objective was to analyze the effect of using a mobile app for the follow-up of patients with oncohematological malignancies undergoing treatment with OAAs on their health outcomes. The secondary objective

Quality indicators and patient outcome measures for palliative care in cancer patients: a systematic review.

IntroductionWith the exponential rise in global cancer incidence, the surge in demand for palliative care has outstripped capacity, limiting patients' access to quality and holistic palliative care, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Despite an upturn in research activity, evidence in palliative care remains limited, given its complexity as well as the shortage of standardised quality indicators (QIs) and patient outcome measures (POMs). The objective of this systematic review is to assess the QIs and POMs used to evaluate palliative care service on aggregated and individual level

A Qualitative Investigation of Health Care Professionals', Patients' and Partners' Views on Psychosocial Issues and Related Interventions for Couples Coping with Cancer.

IntroductionThere is growing evidence that cancer affects couples as an interdependent system and that couple-based psychosocial interventions are efficacious in reducing distress and improving coping skills. However, adoption of a couples-focused approach into cancer care is limited. Previous research has shown that patients and partners hold differing views from health care professionals (HCPs) regarding their psychosocial needs, and HCPs from different disciplines also hold divergent views regarding couples' psychosocial needs. This study aimed to explore the perspectives of HCPs and couple
