Borderline personality disorder and emotion regulation: insights from the Polyvagal Theory.

The current study provides the first published evidence that the parasympathetic component of the autonomic nervous system differentiates the response profiles between individuals diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and controls. Respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), a non-invasive marker of the influence of the myelinated vagal fibers on the heart, and heart period were collected during the presentation of film clips of varying emotional content. The BPD and control groups had similar initial levels of RSA and heart period. However, during the experiment the groups exhibited co

Maternal depression and child internalizing: the moderating role of child emotion regulation.

This study tests a model of children's emotion regulation (ER) as a moderator of the link between maternal depression and child internalizing problems. Participants were 78 children (ages 4 to 7), including 45 children of mothers with a history of childhood-onset depression (COD) and 33 children of mothers who had never been depressed. ER was assessed observationally during a laboratory mood induction. ER behaviors were empirically reduced into 3 categories: (a) negative focus on delay, (b) positive reward anticipation, and (c) behavioral distraction. Linear mixed models indicated that positiv

Cognitive emotion regulation strategies as differential predictors of anxiety and depression, quality of life, and functioning in primary care patients with emotional disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Emotional disorders (ED) such as depression and anxiety are the most prevalent worldwide and are often addressed in primary care (PC). Stressful events can cause people to activate adaptive or maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies (CERS). The type of CERS used by an individual with an ED may influence clinical outcomes, quality of life (QoL), and functioning, although the precise effects are not well-understood. The aim of this study was to determine whether CERS are significant predictors of clinical symptoms, QoL, and functioning in PC patients with EDs. METHOD:

Examining the association among adolescents' emotional clarity, emotion differentiation, and the regulation of negative and positive affect using a daily diary approach.

Emotional clarity and emotion differentiation (ED) are two core aspects of the application of emotional knowledge. During adolescence, novel emotional experiences result in temporary decreases of differentiation and clarity. These temporary difficulties might profoundly impact choices of regulatory strategies. And indeed, prior research has shown that lower emotional clarity and emotion differentiation are each associated with higher use of putatively maladaptive emotion regulation strategies in youth. The two constructs, however, are rarely examined together, and it remains unclear how they a

The relationship between cognitive emotion regulation strategies and emotional manipulation among health colleges students: a cross-sectional correlational study.

Emotional intelligence is commonly associated with career success. Employees with higher emotional intelligence tend to reap greater benefits. However, emotional manipulation has been reported as a dark side of emotional intelligence, which refers to the self-perceived ability to control the emotions and actions of others for self-benefit. Healthcare professionals with high emotional intelligence often improve the overall patient experience. However, their ability to manipulate emotions can have a detrimental impact on the quality of treatment. This cross-sectional correlational study assessed

A person-based approach to emotion socialization in toddlerhood: Individual differences in maternal emotion regulation, mental-health and parental sense of competence.

Mothers adopt various emotion socialization strategies and sometimes exhibit contradictory responses. Thus, it is essential to understand how mothers differentiate in their use of emotion socialization strategies, and whether a set of emotion socialization responses is associated with individual differences in emotion regulation, mental health, and parental sense of competence during toddlerhood. Therefore, we used a person-centred approach to identify mothers' emotion socialization responses and then compared mothers based on the aforementioned characteristics. The mothers (N = 680) with todd

Beliefs about emotions as a metacognitive construct: initial development of a self-report questionnaire measure and preliminary investigation in relation to emotion regulation.

Metacognitive theory, amongst other theories, gives an important role to beliefs about mental states, including beliefs about emotions, in the maintenance of distress. Mentalization theory as well as the dialectical behaviour therapy and emotion-focused therapy literature specifies particular beliefs thought to be related to emotion dysregulation and therefore to a label of borderline personality disorder. The current study aimed to develop a questionnaire to measure the beliefs about emotions as specified by this literature and to test the relationship of this new measure to various aspects o

I Will Listen to Your Emotions, But I Will Hide My Own: People's Different Strategies to Regulate Their Own Versus Others' Emotions.

We can regulate our own and other people's emotions, but it is not clear whether we use the same strategies to regulate others' emotions as we do to regulate our own. In three preregistered studies, we compared participants' preferences for eight different emotion regulation strategies as a function of target identity. Study 1 (N = 119) compared regulating oneself versus a friend and found that direct action, distraction, suppression, and downward comparison were all used significantly more on oneself compared to a friend, while humor, valuing, and receptive listening were all used more on a f

When style meets strategy: testing the moderating role of regulation strategies in the association between emotional style and self-conscious emotions.

INTRODUCTION: Shame- and guilt-proneness represent relatively stable tendencies to experience self-conscious emotions following perceived transgressions. Shame-proneness has traditionally been linked to negative self-evaluation, whereas guilt-proneness has been associated with responsibility-taking and repair. However, both tendencies are increasingly considered in relation to broader emotional functioning and regulatory processes. METHODS: This cross-sectional study investigated whether the emotional-style dimensions outlook (sustained positive affect) and resilience (recovery from negative

A perspective from the European Network for Bipolar and Emotion Regulation on research and intervention for emotion dysregulation in bipolar disorder: challenges and lessons learned.

Bipolar disorder (BD) and emotion dysregulation present substantial challenges for individuals and healthcare providers. Although pharmacological treatments remain the primary approach, psychosocial interventions show promise in addressing sub-threshold symptoms and deepening understanding of mood and emotion dysregulation mechanisms. The European Network for Bipolar Emotion Regulation (ENBER) aims to close the gap between research and clinical practice by offering practical insights for clinicians while contributing to scientific discourse on BD and emotion regulation (ER). This perspective p

Altered effective connectivity of emotion perception and regulation networks during an emotional face perception task in adults with alcohol use disorder.

Impairments in emotional regulation and mood symptoms are interrelated and associated with alcohol use disorder (AUD) risk, but the underlying aberrant neural circuitry involved is poorly understood. In the present study, we examined alterations in effective (directional) connectivity (EC) during emotional face processing in individuals with and without AUD. We utilized functional MRI data from the Human Connectome Project obtained during an emotional face processing task in 70 participants with AUD and 70 controls (CON). Focusing on ventromedial prefrontal cortex (VMPFC), bilateral ventrolate…

Cybervictimization and well-being among adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic: The mediating roles of emotional self-efficacy and emotion regulation.

Cybervictimization has been linked to adverse psychological consequences but little is known about the mechanisms linking cybervictimization to lower well-being. We conducted two studies to examine emotional self-efficacy and distinct emotion regulation strategies as potential mediators in the relationship between cybervictimization and lower well-being among German adolescents during the school closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020. In Study 1, 107 adolescents (M age = 15.76) reported their cybervictimization frequency, emotional self-efficacy beliefs, and aspects of well-being

Emotion regulation difficulties are differentially associated with late positive potential during the processing and regulation of social-affective stimuli.

Emotion regulation difficulties are a transdiagnostic vulnerability linked to maladaptive emotional responding, yet their neural correlates during emotional processing and regulation remain incompletely understood. The present study examined whether individual differences in emotion regulation difficulties are associated with modulation of the late positive potential (LPP), an event-related potential sensitive to emotional salience and regulatory modulation. Seventy-nine adults (mean age = 26.25 years) completed an emotion regulation task involving five conditions: natural viewing of neutral,

The Interpersonal Regulation Interaction Scale (IRIS): A multistudy investigation of receivers' retrospective evaluations of interpersonal emotion regulation interactions.

Recent conceptual and empirical advances have focused on interpersonal dimensions of emotion regulation and, more specifically, to the features of attempted support transactions that shape the outcomes of enacted support. We conducted 2 autobiographical recall studies to investigate receivers' evaluations of intrinsic interpersonal emotion regulation interactions, to ascertain the number of dimensions required to capture variation in those evaluations, and then to examine associations of those dimensions with perceived benefits of the interactions. To do so, we developed a new questionnaire, t

Not just emotion regulation, but cognition: An experience sampling study testing the relations of ecological interpretation biases and use of emotion regulation strategies with momentary affective states during daily life functioning.

BACKGROUND: Current research is moving from studying cognitive biases and maladaptive emotion regulation (ER) as relatively stable phenomena contributing to affective disturbances, adopting ecological methodologies, such as Experience Sampling Methods (ESM). However, there is still limited ESM evidence on the interactions between stress and ER strategies' use, and negative interpretation biases, regarding their relations with momentary affective states. In this study, we used a new ESM design to disentangle the contextual, regulatory and cognitive processes implicated in daily affective experi
