Positive emotion in distress as a potentially effective emotion regulation strategy for depression: A preliminary investigation.

OBJECTIVES: Emotion regulation utilizing positive emotion during negative emotional states might be one of the effective ways to alleviate d … emotion among clinical populations. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Previous research suggests that positive emotions play a key role in recovery from depression and anxiety problems through some forms of psychotherapy. The Positive Emotion In Distress Scale (PEIDS) measures individual differences regarding the extent to which people can experience positive emotion …

Training the emotional brain: improving affective control through emotional working memory training.

Affective cognitive control capacity (e.g., the ability to regulate emotions or manipulate emotional material in the service of task goals) is associated with professional and interpersonal success. Impoverished affective control, by contrast, characterizes many neuropsychiatric disorders. Insights from neuroscience indicate that affective cognitive control relies on the same frontoparietal neural circuitry as working memory (WM) tasks, which suggests that systematic WM training, performed in an emotional context, has the potential to augment affective control. Here we show, using behavioral a…

Preschool children's views on emotion regulation: Functional associations and implications for social-emotional adjustment.

Previous studies show that preschool children view negative emotions as susceptible to intentional control. However, the extent of this understanding and links with child social-emotional adjustment are poorly understood. To examine this, 62 3- and 4-year-olds were presented with puppet scenarios in which characters experienced anger, sadness, and fear. Forty-seven adults were presented with a parallel questionnaire. Participants rated the degree to which six emotion-regulation strategies were effective in decreasing negative emotions. Results showed that even the youngest preschoolers viewed …

Biological substrates of emotional reactivity and regulation in adolescence during an emotional go-nogo task.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a transition period from childhood to adulthood that is often characterized by emotional instability. This period is also a time of increased incidence of anxiety and depression, underscoring the importance of understanding biological substrates of behavioral and emotion regulation during adolescence. Developmental changes in the brain in concert with individual predispositions for anxiety might underlie the increased risk for poor outcomes reported during adolescence. We tested the hypothesis that difficulties in regulating behavior in emotional contexts in adolesce

Relationships of sexual, physical, and emotional abuse to emotional and behavioral problems among incarcerated adolescents.

This study examined the relationships of sexual, physical and emotional abuse to emotional (internalizing) and behavioral (externalizing) problems among incarcerated girls and boys. Participants were youth who were remanded to the correctional facilities within a statewide juvenile correctional system in a southern state in the United States of America. Each participant completed a structured interview regarding abuse history, emotional and behavioral difficulties, and demographic characteristics. Multiple regression analyses indicated that girls were more likely than boys to internalize their

"When emotions teach": a multilevel moderated mediation model of teacher emotion display, classroom climate, and student emotional intelligence on academic risk-taking.

INTRODUCTION: This study examines the association between teacher emotional display and students' academic risk-taking behavior, focusing on the mediating role of classroom climate and the moderating role of student emotional intelligence. METHODS: Data were collected from 419 undergraduate students nested within 68 classrooms at Chinese universities using a three-wave, time-lagged design. Multilevel structural equation modeling was employed to test the hypothesized relationships. RESULTS: Teacher emotional display was positively associated with academic risk-taking behavior both directly an

Negative emotional reactivity and regulation in 12-month-olds following emotional challenge: Contributions of maternal-infant emotional availability in a low-income sample.

We predicted that the quality of mother-infant play as measured by the second edition of the Emotional Availability Scales (EAS; Biringen, Robinson, & Emde, 1993) would be significantly associated with infant emotion regulation over and above infant emotional reactivity in response to an emotionally challenging event. Forty-five 12-month-old infants and their mothers participated in a play session and a protocol designed to elicit infant emotional reactivity and emotion regulation. Emotional reactivity (initial negative response to stress) was conceptualized as reflective of infant temperament

Beliefs About Emotions and Positive Emotion Regulation: Do Fears of Social Evaluation Moderate the Relationship?

Individuals hold a variety of beliefs about emotions, which can influence how they regulate specific emotions. Additionally, concerns about social evaluations can shape how people's beliefs about emotions are associated with the way they manage their feelings. In this study, we investigate the beliefs about undesirability of positive emotions and controllability of feeling good in relation to positive emotion regulation strategies (i.e., positive rumination vs. dampening). Within the scope of this study, the concepts of fear of happiness and discomfort with positive emotions were examined in r…

The impact of emotions on the evaluation of environmentally damaging entrepreneurial opportunities: an experimental study.

INTRODUCTION: Prior scholarly work examined the effects of emotions on evaluations of entrepreneurial opportunities, which were typically non-context-specific. Thus, while the literature on the role of affect in judgments of entrepreneurial projects is prominent, the question of how eco-emotions are connected with evaluations of environmentally damaging entrepreneurial opportunities remains unanswered. METHODS: This study utilized an experimental design to test the impact of three discrete emotions (hope, compassion, and anger) on the evaluation of environmentally damaging entrepreneurial opp…

When resuscitation fails-Nurses' emotions and coping mechanisms after unsuccessful cardiopulmonary resuscitation: An integrative review.

OBJECTIVE: Unsuccessful cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a serious situation that can lead to emotional distress among nurses, including feelings of grief, guilt, stress, and burnout. Despite its psychological impact, limited research has focused on nurses' emotional experiences and the coping strategies they use after unsuccessful resuscitation attempts. The aim of this integrative review was to synthesise and critically evaluate the literature on nurses' emotional responses and coping mechanisms following unsuccessful CPR. REVIEW METHOD USED: Following Whittemore and Knafl's framework

Does Body Checking Regulate Emotions? An Experimental Study on Appearance- and Health-Related Body Checking.

BACKGROUND: Body checking (BC) is widespread among healthy populations and in individuals with eating disorders (EDs), body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), and illness anxiety disorder (IAD). Etiological models of these three disorders originate from research on obsessive-compulsive disorder and propose a short-term reduction of negative affect after BC. However, as empirical evidence shows a heterogenous pattern regarding the reduction of negative affect, the primary objective of this study was to test the etiological models in a cross-over laboratory experiment. METHOD: After induction of negati

Attachment Anxiety and Disordered Eating Among Chinese Young Women: The Mediation of Different Negative Emotions.

Disordered eating is increasingly prevalent among young women, yet the psychological mechanisms underlying these behaviors remain insufficiently understood. This cross-sectional study examined the associations between attachment anxiety and three distinct patterns of disordered eating: uncontrolled eating (UE), emotional eating (EE), and cognitive restraint (CR). Additionally, we investigated the mediating roles of three negative emotions (i.e., depression, anxiety, and stress) in these relationships. Data were collected from 578 young Chinese women (Mean age = 19.48 years) using self-report s…

Veteran and first responder family members show distinct mental health networks centered on negative emotions.

The interplay of mental health symptoms among family members of veterans and first responders remains poorly understood despite their vital support role. Network analysis and community detection were performed on mental health assessment data from 317 treatment-seeking family members of trauma-exposed veterans and first responders, who completed clinical distress measures including posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, and anxiety. Network analysis revealed six distinct symptom communities: depression, generalized anxiety disorder, intrusion and avoidance, anxious arousal, externalizing b

Psychometric Evaluation of the Regulating Emotions in Parenting Scale in Sexual and Gender Minority Parents.

Emotion regulation (ER) in parenting is crucial for parental well-being and children's mental health. However, ER in parenting is often studied as a general construct, overlooking the unique challenges of caregiving, particularly for sexual and gender minority (SGM) parents. This study examines the psychometric properties of the Regulating Emotions in Parenting Scale (REPS) in parents across SGM status. Specifically, we leverage cross-sectional survey data from two national samples of ethno-racially diverse parents (n = 1,958, 32.3% sexual minority, 11.2% gender minority) to evaluate measureme…

Investigating epistemic emotions experienced while reading refutation texts through a fine-grained measure of emotion.

The current study addressed the often-overlooked role of epistemic emotions in refuting misinformation by replicating and expanding on the work of Trevors and Kendeou (2020). It broadened the participant pool beyond well-educated college students and introduced a novel dynamic measure, "DynamicEmo", to capture epistemic emotions experienced while reading refutation texts in a more fine-grained way. Results reaffirmed that positive, negative, and standard refutation texts (vs. non-refutation texts) effectively enhanced knowledge revision. Analysis using DynamicEmo revealed that paragraphs prese…

Modulation of individual and synchronized activities of ankle plantarflexors during quiet standing in aroused emotions.

Emotions influence postural control, but previous studies have mainly examined postural dynamics during quiet standing using the center of pressure as a measure. During quiet standing, neuromuscular activities of ankle plantarflexors are crucial for maintaining postural balance, both in terms of individual and synchronized activities. This study aimed to clarify the emotional effects on the individual and synchronized neuromuscular activities of ankle plantarflexors during quiet standing. Twenty-four healthy male participants were instructed to stand and view emotional pictures for 72 s follow…
