Symmetry engineering in 2D bioelectronics facilitating augmented biosensing interfaces.

Symmetry lies at the heart of two-dimensional (2D) bioelectronics, determining material properties at the fundamental level. Breaking the symmetry allows emergent functionalities and effects. However, symmetry modulation in 2D bioelectronics and the resultant applications have been largely overlooked. Here, we devise an oxidized architectural MXene, referred to as oxidized MXene (OXene), that couples orbit symmetric breaking with inverse symmetric breaking to entitle the optimized interfacial impedance and Schottky-induced piezoelectric effects. The resulting OXene validates applications rangi

Tracheal Tissue Engineering: Principles and State of the Art.

Patients affected by long-segment tracheal defects or stenoses represent an unsolved surgical issue, since they cannot be treated with the conventional surgery of tracheal resection and consequent anastomosis. Hence, different strategies for tracheal replacement have been proposed (synthetic materials, aortic allografts, transplantation, autologous tissue composites, and tissue engineering), each with advantages and drawbacks. Tracheal tissue engineering, on the other hand, aims at recreating a fully functional tracheal substitute, without the need for the patient to receive lifelong immunosup…

Metabolic engineering of Escherichia coli for N-methylserotonin biosynthesis.

N-methylserotonin (NMS) is a valuable indole alkaloid with therapeutic potential for psychiatric and neurological disorders, and it is used in health foods, cosmetics, and weight loss supplements. However, environmental challenges and low reaction efficiencies significantly hinder cost-effective, large-scale production of NMS in plants or through chemical synthesis. Herein, we have successfully engineered Escherichia coli strains to enhance NMS production from L-tryptophan using whole-cell catalysis. We developed multiple biosynthesis pathways incorporating modules for serotonin (5-hydroxytryp

Small spheroids for head and neck cartilage tissue engineering.

The demand for cartilage reconstruction in the head and neck region arises frequently due to trauma, malignancies, and hereditary diseases. Traditional tissue engineering produces cartilage from a small biopsy by combining biomaterials and expanded cells. However, this top-down approach is associated with several limitations, including the non-uniform distribution of cells, lack of physiological cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions, and compromised mechanical properties and tissue architecture. The capacity of cells to aggregate into microtissues enables an alternative bottom-up approach to …

Application of pulsed electric field technology to skin engineering.

Tissue engineering encompasses a range of techniques that direct the growth of cells into a living tissue construct for regenerative medicine applications, disease models, drug discovery, and safety testing. These techniques have been implemented to alleviate the clinical burdens of impaired healing of skin, bone, and other tissues. Construct development requires the integration of tissue-specific cells and/or an extracellular matrix-mimicking biomaterial for structural support. Production of such constructs is generally expensive and environmentally costly, thus eco-sustainable approaches sho…

Application of biomaterials and nanotechnology in corneal tissue engineering.

Corneal diseases are among the most common causes of blindness worldwide. Regardless of the etiology, corneal opacity- or globe integrity-threatening conditions may necessitate corneal replacement procedures. Several procedure types are currently available to address these issues, based on the complexity and extent of injury. Corneal allograft or keratoplasty is considered to be first-line treatment in many cases. However, a significant proportion of the world's population are reported to have no access to this option due to limitations in donor preparation. Thus, providing an appropriate, saf

Engineering cytochrome P450s for selective alkene to carbonyl oxidation.

The Wacker-Tsuji oxidation is an important aerobic oxidation process to synthesize ethanal from ethene and methyl ketones from 1-alkenes. Current challenges in aerobic alkene oxidation include selective carbonyl product formation beyond methyl ketones. This includes the regioselective oxidation of the terminal carbon atom of 1-alkenes, the regioselective ketone formation with internal alkenes as well as the enantioselective alkene to carbonyl oxidation. Recently, the potential of high-valent metal-oxo species for direct alkene to carbonyl oxidation was explored as carbonyl product formation is

An Introduction to Diopatra, the Amazing Ecosystem Engineering Polychaete.

The annelid genus Diopatra occurs in all major oceans but is best represented in the shallow depths of warmer waters, where it lives in elaborately decorated tubes. This paper provides an introduction to the animals, discussing their history and diversity. We describe and illustrate its morphology and geographic distribution. While they were thought to be predominantly gonochoristic, recent reproductive studies show that several species are protandric simultaneous hermaphrodites. Development is by broadcast spawning with a brief pelagic stage or direct development in the parental tube or egg m
