X-linked hypophosphatemic osteomalacia (XLH): Study of 5 adult patients.

BACKGROUND: X-linked hypophosphatemic osteomalacia (XLH) is an inherited disorder that can cause highly disabling musculoskeletal comorbidit … and 75 years of age were included. All had short stature, osteoarticular symptoms and radiological enthesopathy. Four patients had early degenerative arthropathy of the knees and hips, and dental alterations associated with their disease. All patients older than 50 years required some type of prosthetic replacement. Two patients had femoral stress fractures, …

Treatment of periscapular tendinopathy with radiofrequency coblation: A case report.

Overuse injuries of the tendon - 'tendinopathy' - account for 30%-50% of all sporting injuries and a high proportion of orthopaedic referral … maging findings confirmed oedema of the muscles around the inferior scapular margin in keeping with enthesopathy/tendinopathy and she was treated with radiofrequency coblation to the area. This case highlights radiofrequency ablation as a surgical option should non-operative treatments fail in the rare diagnosis of periscapular tendinopathy.

Magnetic resonance imaging findings of desmopathy of the collateral ligaments of the equine distal interphalangeal joint.

We report the use of a low-field magnetic resonance (MR) imaging system for the detection of desmopathy of the collateral ligament of the distal interphalangeal joint and the long-term outcome. Twenty horses were studied and their medical records and MR images were reviewed retrospectively. Long-term follow-up information was obtained by telephonic questionnaires of owners, trainers, or referring veterinarians. Desmopathy of the medial collateral ligament (80%) and enthesopathy of the affected collateral ligament (80%) were common MR imaging features. Treatment consisted of stall rest followed…

Post-yersinial arthritis in Cleveland, England.

Four cases of post-yersinial reactive arthritis are described. All patients presented with an acute lower limb arthropathy with features of an associated enthesopathy. Two patients had restriction of axial skeletal movements. Systemic features were prominent in three, including weight loss and malaise. Mean age of onset was 34 years. Three patients gave a history of antecedent diarrhoea within the previous month. Three patients had raised titres to Y enterocolitica type 0:3 (ranging from 1 in 320 to 1 in 2560) and one had raised titres to Y pseudotuberculosis type 2 at 1 in 640. Two of the thr…

Extraarticular manifestations of juvenile idiopathic arthritis and their impact on health-related quality of life.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study is to investigate extraarticular manifestations (EAMs) in patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) and assess their impact on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among these patients. METHODS: This cross-sectional analytic study was carried out on 117 patients with JIA. EAMs were identified clinically by history and examination. Sicca symptoms, peripheral neuropathy, enthesitis, and skin lesions were picked up during clinical examination. Pulmonary involvement was evaluated by high-resolution CT chest. Patients were assessed by abdominal ult

Outcome measures used in psoriatic arthritis registries and cohorts: A systematic literature review of 27 registries or 16,183 patients.

INTRODUCTION: Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is a multidimensional inflammatory disease for which multiple outcome measures can be used to assess disease activity. In 2006, the OMERACT has proposed the first core domain set in PsA. Since 2006, much work has been performed on outcome measures in PsA. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to assess outcome measures collected in recent PsA registries or longitudinal cohorts. METHODS: A systematic literature review was performed in Pubmed Medline (PROSPERO CRD42020175745) to identify all articles reporting on either registries or longitudinal coh

Ultrasound verified enthesophytes are associated with radiographic progression at entheses in psoriatic arthritis.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this prospective study was to examine whether ultrasound or clinical abnormalities at enthesal sites predict radiographic progression at entheses in psoriatic arthritis (PsA). METHODS: Consecutive PsA patients were included and subjected to clinical and ultrasound assessments at 14 entheses at baseline, 6 and 12 months. Radiographs were performed at 0 and 12 months. By US, we investigated structural (erosions, osteophytes) and inflammatory changes [grey scale (0-32) and power Doppler (0-14, range global ultrasound score 0-140)], and radiographs were evaluated for enthes

Enthesitis in psoriatic arthritis (Part 1): pathophysiology.

Enthesitis is a key manifestation of PsA and current knowledge supports the concept that it may be among the primary events in the development of this disease, as well as other forms of SpA. Patients with PsA seem to have a different threshold to mechanical stress, which may be genetically determined. Hence patients with psoriatic disease respond pathologically with inflammation after being exposed to physiological mechanical stress. Activation of pro-inflammatory mediators such as IL-17 and TNF-α as well as the influx of innate immune cells are key events in the development of enthesitis in P

Musculoskeletal manifestations of Ebola virus.

The 2014 West African Ebola virus disease outbreak shocked the world as it swept through the region leaving Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone struggling to gain control. As the largest Ebola virus disease outbreak to date, there are more survivors in its wake than ever before, with a spectrum of health problems requiring management. Here we review various musculoskeletal manifestations of the virus that can occur both during and after the infection, and consider possible pathogenesis.

SCJ osteoarthritis: The significance of joint surface location for diagnosis.

An evaluation of the method used to diagnose sternoclavicular joint (SCJ) osteoarthritis (OA) in skeletal remains is presented, with particu … rticular cartilage, a diagnosis of OA would be inaccurate and instead it should be considered as an enthesopathy. It is likely that SCJ OA has been incorrectly identified and over-diagnosed in the archaeological record in the past. More histological research into the disc attachment and its degeneration is required before this can be confirmed.

Spontaneous bilateral avulsion fracture of the tuberositas tibiae in a New Zealand White rabbit - a counterpart to Osgood-Schlatter disease in humans?

The first reported case describing a spontaneous bilateral avulsion fracture of the tuberositas tibiae in a New Zealand White rabbit is presented. So far in animals, this condition has been only described in dogs and horses. In humans, this condition is also called Osgood-Schlatter disease (OSD) or syndrome, traction apophysitis of the tibial tubercle (ATT) or patellar tendon enthesopathy of the tibial tuberosity respectively. It is mainly seen in young adolescents coinciding with periods of growth spurts. In humans, its pathogenesis is believed to be caused by repetitive tendon/muscle strain …

Sacroiliitis in juvenile chronic arthritis. A 10-year follow-up.

66 children with early juvenile chronic arthritis underwent HLA A and B typing in 1974; 16 carried HLA B27. Ten of these had a pauciarticular onset, 3 systemic and 3 poly-articular. At follow-up 10 years later bilateral sacroiliitis had developed in 9 of the 16 B27 positive children, all of whom had a pauciarticular onset. Males predominated and these children had an older age of onset and a predominantly lower limb arthropathy. Enthesopathy and acute iritis further distinguished this group clinically. Other sacroiliac changes, usually simple fusion associated with severe hip involvement, were…
