An unconventional approach to evaluating the environmental role of a productive system: An environmental assessment of beef farms in North-West Italy.

The environmental impact of livestock is often evaluated separately from the other agricultural activities involved in an integrated system, such as that of the rearing of Piemontese cattle in the area of origin of the breed. The most frequently used assessment methods (e.g. Footprint approaches or a Life Cycle Assessment) are in fact often used, through a product-based approach, to analyse a single productive process, but such methods do not consider the production of agro-ecological services, and they neglect the interactions that characterise complex systems. Moreover, such methods often on

Assessing the impact of environmental regulations on environmental performance in Chinese cities: A spatial Stochastic Frontier Model with endogeneity analysis.

The Chinese government has implemented environmental regulations to address the deterioration of air quality associated with rapid industrialization. However, there is no consensus on whether environmental regulations are beneficial to environmental performance. The technical challenges related to endogeneity and spatial correlation may bias the estimation of the emission reduction effect of regulations. In this study, we comprehensively evaluate the environmental performance of sulfur dioxide regulations in Chinese cities using a novel stochastic frontier model that introduces the single cont

Toxigenic Vibrio cholerae can cycle between environmental plastic waste and floodwater: Implications for environmental management of cholera.

Globally, there has been a significant rise in cholera cases and deaths, with an increase in the number of low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) reporting outbreaks. In parallel, plastic pollution in LMICs is increasing, and has become a major constituent of urban dump sites. The surfaces of environmental plastic pollution can provide a habitat for complex microbial biofilm communities; this so-called 'plastisphere' can also include human pathogens. Under conditions simulating a peri-urban environmental waste pile, we determine whether toxigenic Vibrio cholerae (O1 classical; O1 El Tor; O13

Predicted occurrence, ecotoxicological risk and environmentally acquired resistance of antiviral drugs associated with COVID-19 in environmental waters.

Antiviral drugs have been used to treat the ever-growing number of coronavirus disease, 2019 (COVID-19) patients. Consequently, unprecedented amounts of such drug residues discharging into ambient waters raise concerns on the potential ecotoxicological effects to aquatic lives, as well as development of antiviral drug-resistance in wildlife. Here, we estimated the occurrence, fate and ecotoxicological risk of 11 therapeutic agents suggested as drugs for COVID-19 treatment and their 13 metabolites in wastewater and environmental waters, based on drug consumption, physical-chemical property, and

Testing the Environmental Kuznets Curve Hypotheses in Chinese Provinces: A Nexus between Regional Government Expenditures and Environmental Quality.

With rapid economic growth, the Chinese government expenditures at various levels have increased adequately. At the same time, the environmental quality in China has deteriorated significantly. In this study, provincial-level data for 31 Chinese provinces during 2007-2017 are used to investigate the impacts of government expenditure on the emissions of three specific measures of environmental degradation. The main objective of this study is to examine the influence of government expenditures, economic growth per capita, environment protection expenditure, and added second-sector value on envir

"Symptoms associated with environmental factors" (SAEF) - Towards a paradigm shift regarding "idiopathic environmental intolerance" and related phenomena.

Health conditions characterized by symptoms associated with chemical, physical and biological environmental factors unrelated to objectifiable pathophysiological mechanisms are often labelled by the general term "idiopathic environmental intolerances". More specific, exposure-related terms are also used, e.g. "multiple chemical sensitivities", "electromagnetic hypersensitivity" and "candidiasis hypersensitivity". The prevalence of the conditions varies from a few up to more than 50%, depending on definitions and populations. Based on evolving knowledge within this field, we provide arguments f

WHO Environmental Noise Guidelines for the European Region: A Systematic Review on Environmental Noise and Permanent Hearing Loss and Tinnitus.

Background: Hearing loss is defined as worsening of hearing acuity and is usually expressed as an increase in the hearing threshold. Tinnitus, defined as "ringing in the ear", is a common and often disturbing accompaniment of hearing loss. Hearing loss and environmental exposures to noise are increasingly recognized health problems. Objectives: The objective was to assess whether the exposure-response relationship can be established between exposures to non-occupational noise and permanent hearing outcomes such as permanent hearing loss and tinnitus. Methods: Information sources: Computer sear

First environmental isolations of Cryptococcus neoformans and Cryptococcus gattii in Tunisia and review of published studies on environmental isolations in Africa.

Cryptococcus neoformans and Cryptococcus gattii are pathogenic yeasts that cause cryptococcosis. These fungi were commonly associated with pigeon droppings and plant materials. The habitat of these pathogens has not been yet studied in Tunisia, although the ecology of these yeasts must be elucidated in order to establish surveillance programs and to prevent infections. The aim of this survey was to recover C. neoformans and C. gattii environmental isolates from pigeon droppings and plant materials in different areas of Sfax region, Tunisia. Nine hundred and fifty samples from leaves, wood, flo

The eye--a neglected organ in environmental and occupational medicine: an overview of known environmental and occupational non-traumatic effects on the eyes.

The objective of this study was to give an overview of the known literature data on the influence of environmental and occupational factors on the eye. Sixty-six articles were selected by searching Medline and PubMed databases using the following key words in different combinations: occupational and environmental factors, dry eye syndrome, cataract, retinal vascular changes. Most of the studies dealt with conditions on the eye surface and used eye discomfort syndrome and dry eye syndrome to outline the effects of air pollutants. Some reported increased frequency of lens opacities due to indoor

The Environmental Model Segment Approach for estimating potential environmental concentrations. II. Application of the model to p-dichlorobenzene and trichloroethene.

The Environmental Model Segment Approach introduced in Part I (R. Frische, W. Klöpffer, G. Rippen, and K. O. Günther, 1984, Ecotoxicol. Environ. Safety 8, 352-362) is applied to estimate potential environmental concentrations of p-dichlorobenzene and trichloroethene. Environmental concentrations of these chemicals can be estimated only with difficulty by other models because of many diffuse emission sources emitting mainly into the air. By comparison of the estimated with the measured environmental concentrations it is found that the claim of the model to yield values which apply to reasonable

Lasting biological effects of early environmental influences. VII. Metabolism of adenosine in mice exposed to early environmental stress.

The metabolism of adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate (cyclic AMP) was studied in specific pathogen-free mice exposed to neonatal infection with mouse enterovirus or to malnutrition during early life. Metabolic activity was determined by measuring the turnover of cyclic AMP-8-(14)C to respiratory (14)CO(2), its incorporation into various organs and plasma, and the binding activity of synaptosome for cyclic AMP. Early malnutrition increased the catabolism of cyclic AMP as measured by expiration in respiratory CO(2). The level of cyclic AMP was lower in plasma and its incorporation into various tissue

Honey bees as integrative bioindicators of environmental pollution: Trace elements and pesticide residues across different environmental contexts.

Honey bees (Apis mellifera) are sophisticated bioindicators due to their capacity to integrate contamination signals from multiple environmental matrices. This study investigated pesticide residues and multi-element accumulation, including rare earth elements (REEs), in worker honey bees across four distinct ecological contexts in Calabria (Southern Italy): two protected montane forests (S1 and S2, Sila National Park), one suburban, and one urban site. A total of 778 agrochemicals and 46 trace elements were targeted using gas and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS and LC-

Reprogramming of fatty acid metabolism induced by environmental pollutant exposure and its role in the toxic effects of environmental pollutants.

Fatty acids (FAs) are vital biomolecules that serve not only as energy substrates but also as bioactive molecules, moieties of other lipids such as phospholipids and triglycerides, structural components of membranes, and precursors to other bioactive molecules. Environmental pollutants, are ubiquitous across environmental, wildlife, and human systems and disrupt FA homeostasis by targeting FA receptors and their associated metabolic networks. Although pollutant-induced disruption of FA metabolism is increasingly recognized, existing studies and reviews have often focused on individual pollutan

An Internet of Things Framework for Monitoring Environmental Conditions in Livestock Housing to Improve Animal Welfare and Assess Environmental Impact.

Devices for assessing the quality of animal environments are important for maintaining production animals, thus improving animal well-being and mitigating pollutant emissions. Therefore, an IoT system was developed and preliminarily assessed across various livestock housing types, including those for pigs, dairy cows, and rabbits. This system measures and transmits key parameters, such as ambient temperature; relative humidity; light intensity; sound pressure; levels of carbon dioxide, ammonia, and hydrogen sulfide; and particulate matter and volatile organic compound concentrations. These dat

WHO Environmental Noise Guidelines for the European Region: A Systematic Review on Environmental Noise and Cardiovascular and Metabolic Effects: A Summary.

To update the current state of evidence and assess its quality, we conducted a systematic review on the effects of environmental noise exposure on the cardio-metabolic systems as input for the new WHO environmental noise guidelines for the European Region. We identified 600 references relating to studies on effects of noise from road, rail and air traffic, and wind turbines on the cardio-metabolic system, published between January 2000 and August 2015. Only 61 studies, investigating different end points, included information enabling estimation of exposure response relationships. These studies

Reading exposure: a (largely) environmental risk factor with environmentally-mediated effects on reading performance in the primary school years.

BACKGROUND: It is widely believed that there are reciprocal links between reading achievement and reading exposure: children who read more do better at reading, and reading achievement itself promotes reading. We tested the hypotheses that these links arise because children's genetically influenced reading performance is correlated with their leisure-time reading exposure, and reading exposure, in turn, may have an environmentally mediated effect on later reading performance. METHOD: The sample consisted of 3039 twin pairs from the UK Twins Early Development Study (TEDS). Reading exposure was
