The residual enzyme activity in tissues of a 6-year-old boy with myoglobinuria and carnitine palmitoyltransferase (CPT) deficiency was studied with malonyl-CoA, a specific inhibitor of CPT-I in rat tissues. In this patient the enzyme deficiency was limited to the CPT fraction insensitive to malonyl-CoA, since the residual activity was an increased amount of CPT sensitive to the inhibitor. CPT sensitivity to malonyl-CoA was also assayed in human liver mitochondria, and inhibition was similar to that found in rat liver. Serum angiotensin-converting enzyme (SACE) levels were measured in 44 subjects six weeks after acute pulmonary histoplasmosis. All patients were infected in a common-source outbreak of histoplasmosis which occurred on one day. All patients had both strictly defined clinical and serologic evidence of infection. Serum glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH) activity was greatly raised (up to 830 times the upper limit of normal) in 16 patients with Reye's syndrome. It is established that tilorone-hydrochloride, the antiviral agent, stimulating the interferon synthesis in the organism of animals under experiment inhibits monooxygenase reactions in the albino rat hepatocytes being administered in combination with phenobarbital and 20-methylcholanthrene. The tilorone effect on the N- and O-demethylase activity of the liver microsomes in vitro was studied. It is established that the rate of dimethylaniline N-demethylation and anisole O-demethylation in this case lowers considerably, the character of the kinetic curves being unchanged.

Three mild-replacer diets containing different amounts of lipid with differing fatty acid compositions were fed to pre-ruminant calves. The snake venom enzymes Ancrod and Batroxobin marajoensis are able to activate human plasma factor XIII as shown by the formation of the gamma-dimers. The concentration of gamma-dimers increases with the concentration of the activating enzymes. Factor XIII activated by Ancrod or Batroxobin marajoensis is, however, unable to catalyse the incorporation of the amine dansyl-cadaverine into casein. The partially activated factor XIII is therefore not demonstrable by means of the artificial test system. This factor XIII loses little activity and remains activable by thrombin.

Investigations were carried out on the serum enzymes, total proteins and some electrolites (potassium and sodium) in eight spleenectomized sheep experimentally infected with Babesia organisms.
